tyy– so they both disregard themselves for the sake of their goal, neph w her flaw and blowing up her cores nd medea w MURKING HER CHILDREN TO SPITE THEIR FATHER, but they also both use a form of the sorcery of names. lemme explain. Medea says 'by the goddess... hecate' when cursing those who 'pained [her] heart' and neph uses sorcery of names, constantly invoking the name of fire, destruction etc. as ive said, the ancient greeks believe names held power, which is why a lot of gods were refered to by title or as 'xxx's son' or even had epithets like 'pallas (maiden) athena' or 'phoebus (bright) apollo', but here medea says a goddess' name directly, pretty similar to the sorcery of names imo considereing how strong hecate is. another fun link is how medea claims her ancestry, her 'having Helios for her grand-sire'. Helios is the titan of the sun (like an older ver of the gods) and nephis is from the 'immortal (gods..) flame (sun) clan', both have ancestral links to the sun so yeah boom
so this is a bit of a worse theory cus i js rlly like the medea and concept of revenge and how justified it is
(summary) medea gets influenced by a love spell and falls in love w jason (yuck), helps him get the golden fleece and kills her brother, chopping him up into little pieces so her dad cant chase em, he has to collect them, so now she has no family. she gives jason 2 sons and he decides to ABANDON HER and remarry. she plots her revenge and kills her sons and jasons new fiancee and father-in-law.
okay so i think the links r obviously the concept of hatred and revenge but also medea is more pissed abt her enemies being happy than her own pains. she follows up 'i will be killed' with 'and bring joy to my foes' making that clear and neph shares this sentiment of her enemies succeeding and continuing to be traitors to the world by 'giving up' on humanity and prioritises victory over her own wellbeing, sacrificing huge swathes of herself.
cassie and oedipus r clear parallels (AGAIN, I DO NOT MEAN THE FUCKING HIS MUM SHITE) with her knowing the truth more often than not and being blind, and him only knowing the truth when hes blinded. the difference, however, is that shes blind "naturally", these truths come to her naturally and so since her blindness isnt a self-inflicted punishment i take it that knowing the 'truth' of so many things must be, so she can be a true parallel. Oedipus angered the gods, not only by commiting patrcide but also doing his mum (ew), and Cas, too, angered them (probably) or at least went against them in freeing sunny from fate, so it stands to reason she must be punished. again, once the truth is out, cassie becomes blind in a way (her future vision getting nerfed) so even more truth=blindness stuff woohoo !! and omg kai omg i can feel a kai theory coming sm1 reply to this pls
sunny theory sighhh... so fate in greek and roman myths is more or less infalliable, like in shadow slave for the most part, and sunny reminds me of oedipus. NOT FUCKING HIS MUM STUFF. okay so theres so much irony in oedipus cus in ancient greek the words for see and know r have the same root (i saw=εἶδον i knew=οἶδα) bcs back then seeing was tantamount to knowing smth. so, the fact that oedipus didnt KNOW the truth (that his wife was his mum) when he could SEE, but KNEW after he blinded himself so couldnt SEE is kinda funny. sunny himself, could SEE the strings of fate but didnt KNOW the truth of how many connections he would lose becoming fateless, and could no longer see his attributes when banished from the spell, couldnt see the 'truth' of himself
bit of a stretch theory but it works sorta ive also got cassie stuff w oedipus
this is an old comment but its a bit deeper on eros. eros is an interesting character in the myths, to me at least, cos of the implications of his diff birth stories. He's either this primordial and therefore more mystical and ancient sort of desire or a more sexual(?), more comprehensible, closer concept to mortal 'love', as the son of aphrodite. 'desire' bringing 'direction' reminds me of the ton of myths that have journeys that happen as a result of god-induced love spells, like the medea, like the fall of troy (paris and helen's whole debacle). Also also it leans into the idea of desire not being eternal and unchanging as the roman ver 'cupid' is a changed version of 'eros' and we know the void ceased to b unchanging once 'desire' showed up.
i havent got many sunny theories but i will try come up w one cus fate nd s*it super common in myths
