Wife of The Demon Prince -
Chapter 91: Better job
Chapter 91: Better job
As Merek was lost in thoughts, Anne’s voice broke his thoughts, "Oh, You are awake. How are you feeling now?" She asked.
"..."
Merek’s black orbs stared at her concerned blue eyes. Why was she worried about a miserable person like him? He was not that helpless to give up his own life, but like so many other people he had killed, he knew one day he’d also die. It didn’t matter if it was today or tomorrow, if he struggled to live but would eventually die anyway, it was inevitable, he’d just hoped to live a little bit longer to repay his highness. But...
Why was he feeling angry for what the young lady had done to save him? He stared at her blankly, but when he didn’t say anything, she spoke to him again,
"Why are you staring at me like that, haven’t you ever seen a lady before?" She said, then added when he didn’t look away, "Do you want something to drink, like water?"
"No, I don’t want your water..." He rudely refused her offer despite the rawness in his throat. However, when Anne heard the way his voice cracked at the end, she stood up and left the bathroom, then returned with a glass of water from her room. Without waiting for his words, she tipped it towards his mouth like a child.
But Merek refused to opened his mouth, she pushed the glass to his mouth again, "Open up if you don’t want me to feed you like a child." She scolded. Without a word, he simply opened his mouth and drank the water.
It was funny how a sip of water seemed to make him feel more energetic. He gulped down the entire glass, Anne then set the glass aside.
Merek looked around, that was when he realized he was still sitting on the bathroom floor. Maybe his weight was too much for her to carry, but she’d covered his body with a thick blanket so he wouldn’t feel the cold at all. Merek slightly felt guilty imagining how the lady had helped him this much.
"Mister thief...What is your name?" Anne asked curiously.
At her sudden curiosity, he turned his head and looked at her. There was something cautious about her gaze, or maybe he was the one seeing it that way, as she looked too curious. What was his name...
"There’s no need for you to know my name, unless you plan to expose me. Am a very dangerous person, it will be best for you to stay far away from me next time."
He wasn’t wrong, and he didn’t want to have anything to do with the young lady anymore. However, she had helped him today, he will repay her kind gesture some day.
Anne chuckled as she nudged his shoulder, "Oh come on, why should I expose you after I’ve saved you? I promise not to tell anybody...so what’s your name?" She asked with her eyebrows raised in question.
Merek narrowed his eyes at her behavior, but then thought it doesn’t matter even though he told her, as they would never meet again...But the thought of how she’d exposed her body for those men, burned an unknown rage in his heart. Damn!
"Merek...Bardot." He blurted, but immediately regretted it as soon as it left his lips. He should have just given her a fake name! Was his head not functioning properly because of the beating and torture he’d received from the queen’s men?
"Merek Bardot..." Anne repeated his name with a faint smile on her face. The way she said his name tickled him strangely. He needed to leave before the lady made him expose more things about himself. Merek forced himself to pull up his upper body, but Anne was quick to push his chest back gently,
"Hey! What do you think you’re doing? Your wounds_"
"Am used to the pain, these are just minor injuries compared to what I normally get...I have to leave before someone finds out am here." Damn it! Why was he talking more than normal?! He thought to himself.
Anne’s eyebrows furrowed, "Minor injuries? What kind of work do you do?"She questioned with concern in her tone.
Merek just stared at her, his primary mission before he was assigned to infiltrate the queen’s residence was to stay by Ara’s side like a bodyguard. He was always around the Boxton’s mansion, and he’d always seen Anne from a distance. Even from afar, he could tell she was a talkative person and always smiling. A person completely different from himself.
He didn’t know if she had always been this kind to everybody, but he didn’t like the way she was being kind and warm to him all of a sudden.
"I have to leave now." He staggered to his feet. It wasn’t the first time that he had overcome death, as he stopped, he stumbled ahead, but Anne was quick to grab his arm,
"I think you should rest a little before leaving..." She suggested, but he shook his head, "No, this is enough." He replied softly as if he was already used to such pains. Anne glanced up at his dark orbs, she felt bad for him.
Merek also glanced at her blue eyes, he spoke in spite of himself, "...Thank you for everything."
Anne’s eyes widened at his unexpected gratitude. Merek, who had finished talking, made his way towards the bathroom’s window. Anne hurriedly went after him and called out to his retreating back,
"Hey, mister thief...I mean Merek!"
"...?"
Merek stopped walking and turned his head back to her with a questioning expression, she then said,
"I have a job offer for you, much better than stealing. After you get well, come see me in the Boxton’s household, I’ll give you a job in my mansion." She offered, "By the way, my name is Annette Boxton." She introduced with a grin on her face.
However, her smile was quick to fall as Merek did not reply and just left through the window without a word.
_So rude!_
