Wife of The Demon Prince -
Chapter 77: A brother’s lame excuse
Chapter 77: A brother’s lame excuse
Anne had become enamored with Hamon since the day he visited the Boxton mansion and kept asking Ara about him all the time.
"Sister, when are we going to visit the castle to see brother-in-law?" Anne questioned.
"I don’t know about that yet."
"Since your relationship is no longer a secret, I think you should go out more often with him." Anne didn’t tire at acting as the Cupid between them. It wasn’t just Anne, even the servants were completely absorbed by Hamon’s visit that day.
At first Ara was startled by how they were all talking about Hamon and asking when he’d visit again. But by now she was accustomed to it. Hamon had swept by them like a storm. Even her father’s reaction had also changed towards her since after then.
She didn’t know if it was because of what they talked about with Hamon in the study room, but her father was certainly different with how he treated her.
Ara felt like she’d made more progress than before, even though she had just only introduced the Prince to her family.
Ara’s life returned to normal, Just like how it was before the rumors. She was only looking forward to the formal announcement of her marriage with Hamon, after that she’d become the crown Princess and began with her plans to make him the king.
Ara was seated on her desk arranging some of the financial calculation parchment, when suddenly thunder rumbled in the sky.
"Milady, it’s raining quite heavily today..." informed Maya who was arranging Ara’s bed.
Ara lifted her head from the parchment and saw it was indeed raining heavily from the window. The hours wasn’t late, but the sky was dark.
"Please check the mansion for any open windows and close them." Ara requested.
Maya nodded, "Yes, Milady." She stopped tidying up the bed and left to check the windows.
Ara turned her eyes away from the stack of parchment on her desk and gazed to the window, she watched as the raindrops splashed against the window.
Not too long ago it had snowed in Findara, but the rain heralded the coming of spring. She hoped it gets warmer before her wedding with Hamon. Anne was more sensitive to cold and more comfortable during the hot summers. If she would soon leave the mansion, who’d take care of her sister when it got colder?
Ara was lost in thoughts staring outside and appreciating the sound of the rain hitting her window. Just then, her eyes caught sight of a figure rushing towards the entrance from the gate. Ara’s brows furrowed slightly. Who could be out in such heavy rain? She thought.
As she was wondering who it was, the maid who left to close the windows came back in a hurry, "Milady, come and see who just arrived in the rain?" Exclaimed the maid.
"...?" Ara gave her a questioning look. Then Maya continued, "The young Lord has arrived just now."
"Brother Henry is here?" The unexpected news made Ara leapt out from her seat and ran outside. As she hurried down the hall towards the first floor, she caught sight of her brother with his raincoat on.
Although she hadn’t seen him for awhile now, he still looked as handsome as always. His tall, solid figure, his darkish brown shoulder length hair was tied behind. He had his usual blunt expression.
"Brother." Ara called as she approached him.
Henry glanced up, the image of his sister coming down the stairs was reflected in his light blue eyes as the rainwater was brushing down his board shoulder.
"My Lord, may I have the coat?" The butler tried to take off his coat, but Henry pushed away the butler’s hand as he saw his sister. Ara came down the stairs in one breath.
Henry’s long legs reached her in no time. Ara couldn’t help but asked, "Why are you here, in such terrible weather?"
"Why am I here? Do you expect me to sit still after you sent me such a letter about your marriage to the crown Prince?!" He demanded, his voice rougher than usual.
Ara could only guess how terrible his mood was, she knew he must have felt betrayed by her secret affair with Hamon, just like any other family member would have felt. She glanced down at her hands,
"I am sorry...for not telling you about it earlier on, but I couldn’t just tell you I was seeing a man..." She apologized.
Henry’s brows drew together, "You could have any man out there...But Why did you choose the crown Prince?"
She glanced up at him confused, not understanding what he was trying to point out, "What do you mean...?"
He sighed, "Don’t you know about his curse? He’s not a complete human...Why him out of all the men?"
Ara had momentarily forgotten about that. Anne was the only one in the family that had no idea about the curse on the crown Prince. Ara was grateful her sister didn’t know about it. If she knew, she’d also probably have opposed to her relationship with Hamon, it would have been hell for Ara.
In her previous life, the rumors about the crown Prince was only whispered amongst the elites and not all the commoners knew about it. Ara noticed how the servants eyes were shimmering with curiosity at Henry’s words. She moved closer to him,
"Brother, can we talk about that inside?" She asked.
Henry’s frown deepened, "Why? What’s wrong with discussing it right here? I don’t care if they all hear, besides they should all hear about him! To hell with the crown Prince!" He rebuked.
It was an unexpected ambush from her brother, he really seemed opposed to the idea of her being with Hamon. She’d passed one mountain and here comes another higher mountain. She thought to herself.
Ara smiled and said in a calm voice, "How about you change your clothes first?" When he glared at her, she added, "You’ll catch a cold if you don’t change now."
In her past life, she’d always found it hard to communicate with her brother, but now she spoke softly to the over emotional Henry. She knew he was this way because he cared so much about her.
"You won’t_" he was about to talk, but Ara was quick to walk behind him and took off his raincoat before he scolded her. At her actions, Henry’s expression softened a bit.
Ara took the raincoat, splashing water onto the marble floor, she handed the coat to the butler, "Please take the raincoat."
"Yes, Milady." The butler who had been listening in on the pair’s conversation, quickly came and took the raincoat from her.
She then turned towards Maya, "Please clean up the water on the floor before someone slips on it."
"Y-yes, Milady." Maya hurried away to bring the clean tools.
Henry just stared at his sister with a blank expression. Ara then said again, "I’ll show you to your room myself...After You change, we can sit and talk."
"Mm..." He hummed with his hands crossed against his chest as he shot her a side glare.
Ara smiled faintly despite Henry’s reluctant action. Even on a rainy day like this, her brother had came to see her without stopping because he was worried about her. Her heart could not help but warm up, for the first time in her life she found her brother’s anger cute.
"Your room is this way, brother." Henry reluctantly followed behind her, Ara bit her lips to held back the smile that threatened to come out as she led him to his room.
After Ara led him to his room, she told him to come to her room after he was done. Then she returned to her own room, she was worried Henry would make a fuss about the matter regardless of anyone around them, so she dismissed all the servants around her room before he comes.
After she stepped in her room, she prepared the tea she’d asked the maid to bring for her brother in advance. Because he’d need it after arriving in the rain.
Some minutes passed before Henry showed up at her door, he was now dressed in causal clothes, with his hair let down his shoulders.
Ara stood up from her seat when she saw him entered, "Have a seat, brother."
"Thank you..." Henry sat down across from her on the sofa, his face still stern.
Ara pushed the warm tea towards him, his brows furrowed at her actions, then said, "What do you think you’re doing? Are you treating me this well, because you’re afraid I’ll oppose your marriage with the crown Prince, right?" He insinuated.
Ara shook her head,"That’s not it, brother. I’m just doing it because you came all the way because of me, I am_"
"Don’t think too much. I didn’t come here because of you, I came here for the sword trials competition training, and not for you." He denied with a straight face.
Ara smiled faintly, because what he said seemed like a lame excuse, but because Henry said it, she’d have to believe him.
He continued in a more serious tone, "Are you really going to marry him?"
