Chapter 51: Grand ball (part 1)
"He said, he’d like to see you at the grand ball wearing that set of jewelry he sent you."
At Merek’s words, Ara was speechless. Was Hamon indirectly saying he wanted her to be the most beautiful at the grand ball?
’I don’t really know how the Prince’s brain works!’
Ara had no expectations for herself from the beginning and she didn’t want any sort of attention on herself at the grand ball by wearing such expensive necklace!
"I hope his highness doesn’t expect much from me?"
"I don’t know about that." Merek replied with his usual stony expression.
Ara strode to her desk to get a pen and a paper then wrote, [ I can’t keep the necklace, please take it back] she folded it , then gave it to Merek,
"Give this to His Highness."
"I’ll give his highness the letter, but only when he gets back from his trip."
"Trip? Where did he go?" Ara asked with narrowed eyes.
"The king sent his highness on an errand to Bredon kingdom, you may not be able to receive an answer before the grand ball."
Bredon kingdom, was a land known for it’s astounding number of the strongest army amongst all the lands.
"Oh I see..." Ara trailed off. As her face flitted with anxiety, she worried what if he left from there and never came back again just like in her previous life. She wondered what kind of errands he went to run for the king as the crown Prince. Would he make it to the grand ball this time?
Merek’s next words soon broke her line of thought by saying, "His Highness said if you didn’t accept the necklace in the end. He told me to tell you this as well..."
"What?"
"He said, "keep your end of agreement. And if you don’t, he wouldn’t keep his words either and do as he pleases outside the kingdom."
Ara’s mouth fell open in surprise, "No way! How could he do that!" She exclaimed.
"I’m just a messenger, My lady."
Merek’s sterile business like manner made Ara to control her anger. It wasn’t polite to pour the anger on the messenger.
’That’s unfair!’
Hamon was trying to force her into accepting his expensive gifts by blackmailing her with his mistresses! But she couldn’t let herself become indebted to the Prince, she was also afraid that one day she would get used to relying on him, and when he leaves her, she would be on her own again.
Ara wasn’t one to rely on someone, and she doesn’t want to get used to his ways of spending on her. At first she liked that Hamon was treating her well, but now she felt trapped and if she kept receiving his care constantly, she would have to pay for it one day.
Ara replied in a sullen voice, "Alright, I’ll take it for now."
There was no other way to give everything back even if she wanted to do so, and the fact that Hamon wasn’t in the kingdom and she wouldn’t be able to meet him in person before the grand ball, she’d have to keep everything for now until she gets the chance to return them.
Ara didn’t like the idea of wearing the necklace, but she had no other choice.
"If that’s all, then I’ll take my leave. My lady."
"Yes, that’s all. Thank you."
Merek silently bowed his head, then deftly went out through the window.
Ara watched as Merek’s figure disappeared through the night, then dragged her feet in frustration to her bed and sat down, it would be difficult for her to fall asleep again as she always found it hard to fall asleep ever since she returned to the past. She didn’t have much time left to prepare before the grand ball, first she would make her fake relationship with Hamon official at the ball, then the wedding would be held as soon as possible so she could become the crown princess.
Ara looked out from her window, and stared at the twinkling stars in the night sky, the stars seemed to be brighter tonight.
"I hope I won’t regret this life time." Ara mumbled.
**********
The day of the grand ball the Boxton holiday mansion was busy, as the grand ball was tonight.
Ara and Anne had to pick their dresses from all the thirty gowns Hamon had sent, the most passionate about it was Anne,
"How does this look, sister?!" Anne held out a dress to Ara, as Anne had been looking through the gowns to help her sister choose, but couldn’t choose as all the gowns were beautiful.
Ara had never seen her sister this excited before, "Which one would you like to wear, Anne?" Ara asked instead of answering.
"What? Let’s choose yours first before mine." Anne mumbled.
----
When they couldn’t find which one to choose, Ara had left Anne with the maids to choose any one for her, as she had some things to finish before the ball evening. But few minutes later, Anne came running to the study room,
"Come and see the one I chose for you, sister!" Anne’s excitement was over the top as she dragged her sister to the dressing room.
Ara followed Anne to the dressing room in anticipation, "Ah!" Exclaimed Ara as she saw the gown.
"Do you like it?!"
"Yes, it’s...beautiful."
The gown was an elegant deep blue, the shoulders were bare, it would emphasize her feminine allure, and there was a rich layered skirt, giving it a floating and elegant feeling. It had a lace like martial on it’s chest area it would show a little skin at that area.
"Wow! I love it!" Ara exclaimed as she held the gown to her shoulders.
"I chose this one for you because it would showcase the black diamond on your necklace, especially given how priceless it is everybody will notice it!"
Anne wasn’t wrong, the necklace was Priceless which was why she hadn’t planned to wear it to the grand ball, but she had no choice now but to wear it, she would only wear it this once then return it to Hamon after the ball. Moreover, it would be her first time meeting Hamon in public, so she had to look beautiful to make it as convincing as possible.
"Thank you for your effort." Ara Thanked.
Anne’s smile widened as she took her sister’s hand to pull her out of the dressing room, "Now that we already have a dress...there’s one more thing left!" Anne exclaimed.
