Wife of The Demon Prince -
Chapter 50: Return gifts
Chapter 50: Return gifts
"Oh my!" She exclaimed.
Ara’s mouth fell open at what she saw in the box.
Inside the box was a set of jewelry with a familiar black jewel that caught her eyes, the box cradled only the set of jewelry of earrings, bracelet, then a necklace.
"Isn’t that the set of jewelry we saw at the jewelry store in the north!" Anne exclaimed.
Ara couldn’t think of who could have sent her such expensive set of jewelry. She recalled the price of the jewelry set she had seen in the north. However, the black diamond on the necklace in the box, looked bigger than the one at the jewelry store. Did someone mistakenly give out their address? It must be a mistake, she hadn’t ordered anything.
Ara closed the box carefully to not ruin the expensive set.
The butler noticed Ara’s confused expression, then he quickly approached the workers who were busy offloading the boxes, "What’s all this? Who asked you to bring them here?"
One of the workers stopped what he was doing to answer, "We’re just doing our job as we were ordered...but our boss ask me to deliver these to the Lady Ara."
The butler received the letter from the man with a suspicious look on his face, he then turned to hand over the letter to Ara.
Ara took the letter with a bemused expression, wondering who could have sent all these gifts to her, she couldn’t think of anyone who would give her such expensive jewelry except for a certain someone she had a slight suspicion of. Ara quickly tore open the envelope containing the letter, but the moment she read through the short content in the letter, her eyes widened.
[ I hope you find one of the dresses suitable for the grand ball. If you don’t like any of them, let me know. I’ll send my men to bring the rest to you. And don’t forget our agreement, you can’t refuse any of those gifts!]
Ara knew who it was at once confirming her suspicion, after reading the letter. Hamon had sent her dresses for the grand ball just as he had promised...but didn’t just send only dresses.
Ara speechlessly watched as the workers transferred the enormous loads inside the mansion, she couldn’t believe the quantity of it. She then heard Anne’s voice beside her,
"Did you know who sent all these gifts?" Anne asked curiously.
"You see...I kind of asked a lot of people to make me dresses, so I guess they all sent... it at once?" Ara lied as she felt cold sweat run down her back.
Even the butler and the maids were staring at her disbelievingly.
Anne looked at her with an expression that reads, ’You’re not being serious.’ Ara smiled awkwardly at their expressions.
’This Prince is going to be the death of me!’
----
After everything was placed in Ara’s room. Both the sisters had started to look through the boxes. So far, they had counted thirty gowns and seven jewelry boxes.
To prevent the clothes from getting creased, they would need to be placed in her dressing room. Meanwhile, Ara opened the seventh jewelry box, she massaged her temple,
’What’s wrong with this Prince?!’
Ara couldn’t afford to look shabby at the grand ball, but Hamon’s gifts were too much, too extravagant, too expensive! Her head was already hurting thinking of it.
On the other hand Anne was singing happily as she arranged the dresses, "Oh my goodness! Look at this pretty red gown!...Sister look!"
Anne lifted the red dress up to show her sister. She liked the dresses they had got from Teawe’s shop, but it couldn’t be compared to these dresses that arrived at their mansion.
The stolen dresses were fit for any noble to wear, but these were elegant attire fit for only royalties. One dress drew attention to the chest, while another had a rich design at the hem of it’s skirt.
Anne was stunned by all the beautiful dresses, she wondered who really sent them. "All the dresses look like they were made in Dumbarton kingdom!" Anne exclaimed.
Ara didn’t answer as she was unsure of the origin of the dresses. However, all the things Hamon sent looked quite expensive, he must be extremely wealthy having acquired so many riches from war.
’I can’t keep all this. What if I take just the ones we need and return the rest?’
That was impossible as she had already agreed to his stupid condition to not refuse anything he sent!
"Haa!" Ara let out a frustrated sigh.
Anne who was still soaking in the gifts, suddenly jumped up to Ara, "So tell me...who sent all these to you!" Exclaimed Anne with her hands on her waist.
"The sender wouldn’t want me to reveal who he is." Ara Stated with a stiff smile, she had managed to avoid answering the question.
While Anne replied with a cheesy expression, "Whoever he is, I think he might have feelings for you!"
"Huh? No way!"
"Oh come on, sister. Don’t hide it from me, the sender must have some kind of feelings towards you, or else why would he send all these gifts!"
Anne didn’t mean anything deep, but Ara realized a new possibility. She appreciated that Hamon was nice to her, but she never thought of it in those terms.
’He wouldn’t, would he?’
Whatever the intentions he used to send these gifts. However, there was nothing between them, but the contract. At best, Hamon seemed more likely to be a flirt and a Casanova! So why would he even choose to have feelings for someone like her...
Perhaps he just sent it out of kindness? Ara chose to keep it that way, he was just being kind to her.
"I can’t believe my sister found someone she loves more than me, he even sent her expensive gifts!" Exclaimed Anne with a dramatic expression.
Ara stroked her sister’s soft cheeks, "I’d never like anyone more than you, Anne." Ara assured.
"Really?" Anne asked doubtfully.
"Yes. If you promise to never leave me alone in this world, I’d love only you."
"Sister, you’ve started again with your strange words. Am not going anywhere, I’ll stay with you forever!" Exclaimed Anne as her cheeks turned bright red as she smiled.
This small happiness will do, she’d never give up on this life she had been given again! Ara thought.
-----
After Anne left the room, Are walked to her window then whistled five times. She needed to see Merek as soon as possible, but to her disappointment Merek didn’t show up.
--
Late in the night when the Boxton mansion was already quiet, Merek arrived at Ara’s window. He was very cautious than asual, as a man seen sneaking into a woman’s room at night would cause unwanted rumors.
Merek had wanted to come when the lady had called, but the soldiers didn’t give him a chance to sneak in easily, so he had waited until they changed Shift. It wasn’t polite to come at such time of the night, but he had no choice.
He quietly landed in the room then turned to close the Windows.
Ara who was just about to succumb to slumber, quickly shot her eyes open at the slight noise at the window, she took out her dagger under her pillow, that was when she heard Merek’s voice from the dim light,
"It’s me Merek...why have you called?"
Ara loosened her grip on the dagger and got out of bed, it wasn’t polite to receive a guest while lying down. However, Merek looked away from her direction, as to not see her just in her night dress.
Ara noticed his reaction and hurriedly slipped on her robe next to her bed. She went straight to the point,
"His Highness sent some gifts in the morning...did you know about it?" She asked.
"Yes."
Ara continued, "I’d only accept some of the dresses, but not the jewelry he sent. I want you to re__"
Merek was quick to cut her off, "I can’t return anything."
Merek seemed to have anticipated her reply, when Ara tried to open her mouth to speak again, he uttered,
"His Highness said if I dare to take anything back from you...he’d take my head off my neck!"
"W-what?" Ara was shocked by his unexpected words, she spoke again with doubt written on her face, "Was that some kind of a joke?"
"I daren’t joke with you, My lady."
Ara doubted Hamon would really kill Merek, but Merek had uttered with such serious expression. Hamon seemed to have known she would attempt to return his gifts, in fact, he had even made her agree to him at the restaurant!
’ How can I keep them? I won’t keep them!’
The cost of the dresses and jewelry he had sent alone were enormous, let alone the most expensive black diamond from Dumbarton! She couldn’t just accept it without any good reasons.
"I want you to tell the Prince that I won’t wear such expensive things to the grand ball, and I’ll return it to him myself." Ara was insistent, but Merek replied with his usual stony expression,
"I’ll let him know, but his highness said, ’ if she makes such requests to return it, tell her this." Merek paused as if he felt uncomfortable relaying the Prince’s message, then continued,
"He said, he’d like to see you at the grand ball wearing that set of jewelry he sent you."
