Wife of The Demon Prince -
Chapter 45: Man of high taste
Chapter 45: Man of high taste
Back at the Boxton mansion. Anne lay down on her bed while leisurely reading a book.
KNOCK KNOCK
The knock on the door made her look up from the book before she called out, "Come in." As the door was pushed open, a maid came in, then bowed, "My lady. There’s a man outside the entrance asking to see lady Ara."
Anne’s brows drew together, "What man?" Anne asked as she dropped the book then got off her bed,
"He said he’s here to deliver something to lady Ara." The maid explained, as she led Anne to the man in question.
As Anne stepped out to the entrance door, she saw a man with his back to her, he was dressed in a fine attire.
As if the man heard her footsteps, he turned to face Anne with a smile on his face,
"Good evening, my lady."
The person at the entrance turned out to be Ulric the jewelry store owner, with a little box in his hands. Anne recognized him, then greeted, "Evening." Her eyes fell on the box he was holding, "Did you come to deliver the earrings?"
Even though, he was the owner of the store, Anne hadn’t expected for him to be the one to deliver it. Perhaps the man noticed her uncertainty, then gave her a reassuring smile, "Yes. I came to the south for some meetings, so I thought why not to deliver it myself instead."
"Oh I see."
"Is your elder sister around? I hope she would like the earrings’ design." He inquired with a kind smile on his face, Anne didn’t think anything suspicious about the man, then replied, "My sister isn’t in the mansion right now, she went out to get dresses made a while ago."
"Oh is that so? Do you by any chance know where she went to get the dresses?" He asked with the same smile on his face.
Anne shook her head, "No. I don’t...I’ll take this if that’s all." She took the box from him, she had no intention of making small talks with the man, "Thank you for delivering this here." Anne having finished her words, was about to turn to leave, when the man hurried to say,
"One moment!"
Anne looked at him wondering what he wanted after they were already done. The man continued to say, "I want to ask you something, if you don’t mind."
"What is it?"
"Do you know which jewelry store your sister got her necklace? The necklace she wore to my store." Ulric saw the confusion on the young lady’s face then added, "The one with a half red stone."
Anne seemed to have recognized the necklace he was referring to, "Oh. That necklace...I don’t know which store she got it from, but it seems to be precious to my sister. Why do you ask?"
"Nothing. I wanted to make a necklace with a similar stone, but I couldn’t find the same stone in the gem market, so I wanted to inquire from her which store she got it from." Ulric lied as it looked like the young lady didn’t know anything about the necklace. He would have to find the elder sister then.
Anne’s reply was just, "Oh."
"I’ll take my leave then. I hope you drop by my store again when you go back to the north, there are new designs from Dumbarton." Ulric bowed.
Anne nodded, "We will. Goodnight."
Anne didn’t think much about the man, as she turned and strode back inside the mansion curiously holding the box eager to see the earrings.
Ulric smirked as he walked out of the mansion, ’ Time to go on a search!’
*************
The prince’s carriage finally arrived at a famous restaurant in the southern part, known amongst the elites.
As they stepped out of the carriage, Ara looked up at the sign written at the top of the building, ’Welcome to Cromer’s restaurant.’ She had only heard of the place, but had never been there before.
As they walked inside the restaurant, Ara’s jaw dropped in surprise, the place was huge, but the entire restaurant seemed to be empty with no other soul around. She followed behind Hamon as he led her to a table. After Ara sat down, she glanced around then saw some of Hamon’s men blocking the whole building to stop anybody from entering.
Was this Prince out of his mind or something?
Hamon on the other hand, sat on his chair with a satisfied expression. He had sent his men to clear the whole restaurant beforehand, since his future wife doesn’t want anybody to see them together in public, then nobody would.
"You can choose whatever you want." Hamon handed Ara the menu.
Ara took the menu, but the Prices on it made her freeze, she glanced up at Hamon. How did he expect her to choose from these expensive dishes? Ara remark in a slightly wary voice,
"I’ll take anything you choose."
Hamon gave her a look she couldn’t understand before he immediately snapped his fingers, the owner of the restaurant himself came running to their table in no time, he bowed,
"What would you like, My Lord?"
Hamon casually ordered, "Each of all the dishes you have."
"Right away , My Lord."
Ara’s jaw dropped in surprise at Hamon’s order. What? All the dishes?!
Ara hurried to say as she stood up,"I...I think am full, I don’t fell like eating anymore."
However, before she could even take one step, Hamon was quick to grab her wrist, "And where do you think you’re running off to? Don’t you like it here?" He asked with a raised brow, as if what he’d ordered was normal.
Ara didn’t know what to say, because this Prince sure was losing it! How was he even able to afford all this? She glared at him a bit.
When Hamon saw she wasn’t saying anything, he said, "I haven’t had anything to eat since this morning, and I eat a lot when am hungry. That’s why I ordered that much...won’t you accompany me while I eat?"
Ara knew he only said it to make her stay, but she sat back down because she had somethings to discuss with him, "Alright."
Hamon smiled as he watched Ara sit back down, "Where would you want to go next?"
It was an ordinary question, but Ara knew not to take it lightly, because the Prince somehow misinterpreted her words in his own twisted ways. Ara had told him she didn’t want them to be seen together before the grand ball, but Hamon had went ahead to purchase a private box at the theater hall, and now the whole restaurant.
Ara simply wanted to have a quiet meeting in an isolated place she never asked him to spend this much on their meeting. She composed her thoughts for a moment, then took a deep breath before she spoke in a serious but firm voice,
"I’ll be honest with you. I don’t like all this, it’s all too much!" Ara had no idea what exactly was going on in his head, but everything Hamon did was somehow questionable. Who would go this far as to spend this much on the woman you didn’t even know before? For some reason, it made her quite uncomfortable and even more curious, and to top it off, he was spending a lot of money, his purchases could fund the Boxton expenses for months.
Ara had been the one handling the Boxton household since her mother’s passing, so she was quite sensitive about how the household expenses were managed, and to be honest, it had made her a little bit of a miser.
Despite the seriousness in her voice, the Prince still found it funny, he chuckled, "How is it too much? I haven’t even done anything yet...so What part do you find too much?" He asked as he leaned forward on the table.
What does he mean by haven’t even done anything yet?
"Everything...Why would you tell your men to stop people from entering?" Except, if he bought the whole place, she added internally.
"Stop people from entering?" Hamon repeated after her with confusion on his face as if he didn’t know what she was talking about.
Then Ara gestured to his men at the entrance who just sent some couples away.
"Oh that." Hamon stated as if he just realized what she meant, "Didn’t you say you didn’t want us to be seen by anybody before the grand ball?...so am just keeping my words to you." He remarked in a nonchalant manner as if everything was normal.
"Then we could have met somewhere else instead of wasting money on all this!." Ara Stated seriously.
Hamon’s lips pulled up, "I told you to get used to it, because am a man of high taste."
Ara narrowed her eyes at Hamon, wondering how he even got the money. Where did he even get all the money from? Even if he was the crown Prince there was a limit to the budget he could use every month, could he have squandered a whole monthly budget? Does he spend this much on all of his mistresses? Was he really a Casanova?
There were a lot of questions Ara wanted to ask.
Hamon could see the curiosity in her eyes, he smiled a little, "I know what you’re thinking...you must be thinking about how I got all the wealth, when I have no support in the castle."
Of course she was thinking that!
"Do you have any idea how many battles I’ve won? They’re countless right?" He asked as the smile on his face drops.
Of course there were countless, the crown Prince was known for his achievements on the battlefield.
Ara did not reply and only stared at him, then he said, "Have you ever wonder where all the wealth I took possession of from those battles I won go to?"
As soon as Ara heard his words, her eyes widend in realization. So the crown Prince...
