Chapter 313: Never have to see me
Eadlin silently returned to her room after walking into the Boxton mansion. The whole place was silent and there was no sign of Maya anywhere around.
She was tired and needed a bath, so she stepped out of her room again to perhaps find a maid or even Maya herself. However the long hallways were silent without anyone around.
With a suspicious frown Eadlin continued to walk but couldn’t find a single maid anywhere around. She began to wonder just what was going on.
Since she didn’t find a maid, Eadlin decided to head out to ask the guards if something was wrong, she had just stepped outside when she heard the faint sound of voices coming from somewhere close to Henry’s training grounds.
She trailed the sound of voices hoping to find out why the whole mansion seemed deserted all of a sudden.
As she approached, Eadlin was met with an astonishing sight. All the guards and maids had been gathered in the same place.
"My lord, we’ve almost searched the whole city, lady Eadlin is nowhere in sight." Froylan reported to Henry who had his back towards her direction she couldn’t see the expression on his face.
"How long has it been since you noticed she was missing?"
She heard Henry ask the maids, she couldn’t tell for certain, but she almost thought she heard a small tinge of worry in his voice.
"I reported it to you immediately I noticed her absence, I’d gone to her room to serve her dinner when I didn’t find her in her room." A maid came forward to report.
"That’s about four hours now my lord." Froylan stated.
Eadlin, who had been listening in seemed to have come to a sudden realization. Were they talking about her? Perhaps they thought she ran away again.
"Split up all the guards, go back into the city to keep searching, send a few batches to all the different borders and..."
"My lord." Froylan who had spotted Eadlin approaching from behind Henry quickly alerted him.
"Don’t interrupt me Froylan you’ll lead the men, no matter what you do make sure you find the princess safe, sound, and unharmed, I hope she’s not fallen into the wrong hands again." Henry sounded incredibly irritated, however anyone who’d listen deeply could hear the concern in his tone.
Eadlin who was now standing right behind him had heard it as well. However, she was quick to extinguish the small hope that had almost taken sprout in her heart as she heard the concern in his voice, he was after all just following the command of his king, he was doing everything for her safety and trying to secure a future for her on her brother’s request, a future for her with someone else.
She felt a pang of disappointment in her chest.
"My lord, it’s lady Eadlin." Froylan informed him quickly when he noticed Henry wanted to continue to speak.
Henry who was about to open his mouth to say something suddenly stopped realizing what Froylan had said, "What?"
That was when he noticed all the maids were looking past behind him. Henry turned around to find Eadlin standing a small distance from him.
First his expression showed slight shock, then worry as his eyes quickly scanned her from head to toe to see if she was hurt or injured or if her attire was out of place, after looking at her for a few seconds and making sure she didn’t look the slightest bit hurt, relief washed over him, before a seething rage took place of the worry he’d felt,
"Where have you been?" With a menacing step forward he asked sternly, his voice vibrating with rage.
Eadlin was taken aback by his sudden anger, she wanted to speak but before she could get the chance to, he added,
"Do you know how long we’ve been looking for you? How could you suddenly leave like that?!"
Eadlin who had been feeling disappointed at the fact that he didn’t actually care about her but was doing it all on the command of her brother felt incensed by his rage,
"I can choose to come and go as I want my lord, I might be under your roof but I’m not under your control." Though she used respectful terms, her voice mirrored the exact same rage in his.
At her even more formal way of addressing him, Henry’s expression got darker, and the rage in his eyes increased, "I’m just looking out for your safety, if anything had happened to you..."
"From now on whatever happens to me is none of your concern! I have done my part according to our deal, now it’s time for you to do yours, take me to the Bimmari mountains and you’ll never have to see me again!"
Eadlin turned around immediately after saying that storming off she headed back to her room.
The whole place fell silent, all the maids and guards gathered around keeping silent while each sharing astonished glances between each other.
As he watched her run off, along with the last words she said to him, realization suddenly washed over him. She had to leave now, according to the promise he’d made, he would have to send her off to the Bimmari mountains.
For some reason, a tight ache itched at his chest.
Later into the night.
With full darkness that cast a blanket over the world, with the sounds of hooting owls filling the silence.
Inside the vast open courtyard where the moon fully illuminated the yard. Along with the distant hooting of owls one could hear the sharp sounds of a sword cutting through the air.
With each swing of his arm came a shape whooshing force that could cut a thick log in a clean half. With his upper body bare and his long dark hair tied behind his head leaving a few stray strands sticking to the accumulated sweat on his face.
His expression was stone cold, however in the depths of his eyes was a deep confusion.
He had lost his temper with her earlier, why?
Henry thought as he made a sharp turn his blade cutting through the air in a fluid motion.
All through his life he had been an indifferent person, he was brutal on the battle field, but calm to the ordinary man, especially to young women, though he was cold and indifferent to them, he had never once lost his temper on a lady before, why then did he lose his temper with Eadlin?
He leapt skillfully, moving to another spot in the blink of an eye, a move that would have completely caught an opponent off guard that they won’t even realize when their heads would fall off their neck.
However, Henry was certain underneath that rage he’d felt was another deeply disturbing feeling, something he had never felt before, something he couldn’t place a finger on. And the sheer helplessness these feelings brought him where he was usually unable to keep a control over himself like he usually did annoyed him.
Just like the kind of helplessness he felt at the thought that he would have to deliver her off to the Bimmari mountains to spend the rest of her life as a nun.
"Argh!" He let out a frustrated groan, deeply piercing his sword into the earth, as he breathed heavily.
Why did he feel that pain again? A deep pain when he thought about her becoming a nun. Why did he care so much about her than he should?
What were these strange feelings that plagued his mind?
