Wife of The Demon Prince -
Chapter 305: A guest
Chapter 305: A guest
After Kelvin left the parlour room, Eadlin and Henry sat there, none of them said anything to the other. Henry turned his head to the side, he saw how Eadlin was blankly staring at her hand, which she placed on her lap.
"Don’t let that idiot’s words discourage you, he must be blind not to see beyond your injured arm. Don’t worry, I will find the right man for you." He tried to cheer her up, but she didn’t budge and continued to stare blankly at her arm.
"Are you alright?" He asked in concern when she didn’t speak, and raised her hand to wipe her eyes as if she was crying. He really wasn’t good at cheering people up. Even when his sisters would cry over something, he wouldn’t know what to do, in the end he would have the maids give them some chocolate tea to cheer them up.
Henry stood up from his seat, he then took her small hand in his large rough ones, "Come with me." He said when she glanced up at him questioningly with the rim of her eyes now red.
He pulled her along with him towards his chamber. Henry was someone who wasn’t very good with words, though he would like to comfort her, he didn’t know what to say.
Eadlin’s eyebrows furrowed as he took her to his room. The room was spacious and had a masculine theme, with incredibly dark colors, and thick curtains that covered all the windows. Eadlin’s eyes scanned around the room, she felt like such a setting did indeed fit him.
But why did he bring her to his room?
She gave him a questioning look, "Why did you bring me here?"
Henry released her hand, and without a word he strode towards his dressing room. He came out shortly with a small box in his hand, he then handed it to her, "Have this..."
Eadlin took the box from him in curiosity, and when she opened it, she saw a pack of deep brown objects of different shapes inside it. "Chocolate...?" She glanced up at him with slight confusion.
Henry gave a curt nod, then turned away to avoid her gaze as he spoke, "I used to buy a lot of these chocolate boxes and stored it, I usually give them to my sisters when they’re not in a good mood. So, I thought to give one to you as well."
Eadlin looked down at the box of chocolate in her hand, then smiled bitterly, of course, he was treating her like a sister. What else was she expecting?
"Thank you..." She murmured, then after a short moment of silence, she added, "Lord Henry, I think it would be best you give up on trying to match me up. It’s already clear that no man in his right senses would take me as their wife. I don’t want to meet any suitors anymore, just send me to the mountains already."
"You shouldn’t give up this soon, princess. I have given my word to take the responsibility of marrying you off, so please let me."
"You...!" Eadlin wanted to speak that she really wasn’t interested in marrying any of those men, because her heart already belonged to someone else, but then decided to not speak. Of what use was telling him this anyway, it didn’t matter. Besides, she was only doing this to make Henry feel better and not continue to feel guilty for what wasn’t his fault to begin with.
"If you’re unhappy with the arrangements, you can let me know. I won’t force you to do what you don’t want to, your highness." Henry said when he saw that she wanted to speak but didn’t. He was only doing all this for her sake, he didn’t want her to waste her youth being a nun, when she could also live happily like any other young lady out there.
Eadlin forced a smile, "Nevermind. There’s no need to change your arrangements, because I will only meet one more suitor, if he disagrees to marry me...then please get ready to send me to the mountains as we agreed before. I wouldn’t want to be a burden to you or your family."
Henry frowned upon her words, "I have said this before, and I will say it again. You are not a burden to any of us, and your presence in the mansion only made it livelier than it was before I brought you here. So please, don’t let that bother you." He assured with a soft expression.
His assurance did little to clear the doubts in her mind, she still believed herself to be a burden to him, however she smiled faintly and said, "I’m glad to know that. Thank you... if there’s nothing else, I will head back to my room to rest."
Henry nodded his head, "All right, you may go." He said with a faint smile and watched her retreating back as she left his room. He really did not want her to leave to the mountains, he wanted her to stay back, he wouldn’t have minded marrying her as long as it would keep her from leaving Findara, but it turned out she didn’t like him, and would rather marry someone else than be with him.
Henry sighed deeply as he looked down at the hand he used to hold her earlier, he could still feel the lingering warmth of her palm in his.
"I should get her married as soon as possible, before I leave for the generals training..." He mumbled to himself, it was about time he also took his father’s place as the major general of Findara. His father would not be returning to his position after such an injury, and he had come to the age of retirement. Just like the grand general’s son, Alex, he would also have to go to the camp in Zari for the training. And he couldn’t leave knowing the woman who once saved him wasn’t in good hands. If only she could just agree to marry him...
Why was he bothering about this again? She didn’t want him, so what? He would get her married to another person anyway. He mused. Henry then clenched the fist of the hand he held her with to get rid of the warmth, before walking out of his room.
The sun rose and set repeatedly, and three days passed by. In the east garden of the Boxton mansion, Eadlin sat on the white swing with a book in hand, she had a faint smile on as she read the book. However, her assigned maid, Maya soon came to inform her,
"My lady, you have a guest."
"A guest?" She asked cluelesly since no one she knew of would come for her at the Boxton mansion.
"I believe he’s your suitor my lady." Maya added.
Eadlin frowned upon hearing that. Her suitor? It wasn’t a surprise that another suitor had come for her, but then Henry wasn’t around, and he hadn’t informed her of finding another suitor for her. He would normally make preparations in advance before bringing the suitor to the mansion to meet her.
"Where is he now?" She asked as she kept the book on the swing and stood up, maybe this time there was a change in the arrangements and Henry hadn’t informed her about it. Besides she had made an agreement with Henry, this would be her last suitor, if the man refused to marry her, then Henry would take her to the mountains himself.
"The guest is already in the parlour room, my lady."
Eadlin made her way to the parlour room. This time she hadn’t gotten the chance to doll herself up before meeting her suitor, since it was unexpected. When she arrived at the room, she was met with a young handsome man who elegantly sat crossed legs while he sipped from the tea served to him. When he turned his head to her direction, Eadlin stopped dead in her tracks as she immediately recognized the young man.
He also seemed to recognize her with how his eyes widened in astonishment, "Your Highness?" He called when Eadlin turned to leave the room in a hurry. She stopped in her tracks again. ’Why him among all the men in the kingdom?!’ she clenched her teeth in anger.
The young man was none other than the son of Findara’s minister of finance, David, and also a friend of her brother Cassius. Her brother had once tried to set her up with David, and the young man had almost raped her, but she had escaped such a fate by kicking him in the middle. She hadn’t met him again after that day, but who would have thought he would be her suitor now?
"What a coincidence, your highness, who would have thought we will meet again after such an encounter in the past? So you’ve been hiding in the Boxton mansion all this while." Came David’s taunting words.
Eadlin inhaled and exhaled to control her anger, she then turned to face the young man with a smile, "A coincidence indeed. So what brings you here today, lord David?"
