Wife of The Demon Prince -
Chapter 290: Where is my wife?!
Chapter 290: Where is my wife?!
Ara wanted to move, but her body was too weak, she knew that if she lost consciousness here, she would die. The heat from the flame was starting to get unbearable, and was moving closer to her, if she did not move away, it would only be a matter of time before she’d be burned to ashes.
’Ara you have to move away...’ she told herself, but despite that she was unable to do so. She forced her head to look towards Cornell’s dead body, and saw that it had caught fire and was burning. Perhaps, she would be the next one to burn.
She lay motionless on the ground as she struggled to stay awake. It seemed even the heavens weren’t in her favor, and fate was still cruel to her. For every little sin and mistake, there would be punishments or other form of pain, if grief was written in ones fate, then reasons would be born to push one to their most miserable point. Happiness never lasts when one was bound with grief.
She must have committed some unforgivable sin in her past life to be bound with grief and loses. Ara’s heart felt heavier than a huge rock as all her happy moments with Hamon played in her head. Perhaps it was better she died here, since death was already written in her fate. But...
’...I don’t want a moment without you, Hamon. For you have showed me what it was like to be loved and cared for.’
Hot tears rolled down her eyes. ’Oh heavens, if my fate is bound with grief and death... please grant me the chance to give birth to the lives inside me.’ Ara prayed silently in her mind as she felt the urge to sleep. Her death was already inevitable in a year, but at least she wanted to leave her offsprings behind. And also get to say a proper goodbye to Hamon...
Ara tried to lift up her body, but it felt as heavy as a soaked cotton. She smiled bitterly as she began to close her eyes to accept her fate. But just when she was about to completely give in to the darkness, she heard a voice calling her from a distance.
"Your majesty, where are you?"
Ara’s eyes flew opened as she recognized the voice immediately. It was Merek. She realized there was still someone around to save her from burning in the ravenous flames.
Merek and the rest of the troops searched for Ara. The entire forest was almost completely engulfed with the flames, and it would be impossible for anybody inside to survive, however Merek did not give up his search. He ran around as he yelled,
"Your majesty, if you are still alive, please answer me or send a signal!"
Ara could hear him clearly, and she could sense the desperation in his voice as he continued to call her. She could also hear the distant voices of the rest of the troops. She felt a ray of hope, if only she could yell or call out to him, she might be able to survive this.
But the smoke had gotten to her so much so she could not speak. Time was running out, if she did not respond Merek would assume she was dead and leave.
"Merek...!" She wanted to call loudly, but she did not have the energy to do so, and her voice only came as a whisper.
’What should I do? Please don’t go!’ Ara desperately wanted to say out loud as she heard Merek’s voice drawing away from her direction. In the state of her desperation, she tried to think of how to draw his attention back to her.
Ara weakly turned her head to the side, her broken bow came into veiw, she could not shoot any more arrows with it, but she could use it.
"Ahh...!" Ara stretched her arm and grasped the bow, then began to hit it as hard as she could against her sword.
Tang! Tang! Tang!
Her signal for help rang out in the fiery air. It was not particularly booming, but she hoped it echoed far enough for it to be heard on the other side.
As if Ara’s desperate wish had reached her savior, someone soon
emerged from the thick smoke not too far away. He had a handkerchief pressed against his nose and mouth. His side bangs were pushed behind.
"Your majesty!" Merek’s usual composure broke, and he rushed towards Ara on the ground. He quickly removed another handkerchief from his pocket and used it to cover her nose.
"Forgive me for this, your majesty." He apologized before he swiftly lifted her body into his arms. It was normal for him to touch Ara’s body under these circumstances, but Merek still kept his manners out of habit.
He carried her and walked to the direction he had came from. Ara wanted to thank him but she could barely rasp out a breath from her dry lips.
"I found her! Everyone get out of here before the forest completely burns down!" He yelled out to the rest of his troops who were scattered around the burning forest in search of Ara.
The thick smoke obscured everything in the vicinity, but several voices yelled back in response, "Yes, sir!"
The flame was more intense in the area where Merek found Ara, and there was no way to cross out now that a tree had fallen over the path he had passed through earlier.
Merek looked around his surroundings trying to find another way out, but there was none. "Hold on your majesty, we will soon get out of this." He assured as Ara coughed again due to the smoke.
Merek’s eyes fell on a small burning tree, he then took few readying steps backwards before dashing forward into a running jump. He flew over the small burning tree before landing bodily on the ground. However, he made sure Ara did not hit the ground, but him.
Nevertheless, Merek murmured a sorry before pushing up from the ground with Ara still in his arms. At the same time, Ara glanced back at the clearing where Merek had pulled her from. Cornell’s body was completely engulfed in the flames. She shuddered at the thought that she would have been burned as well had Merek arrived just a minute late.
’... Thank heavens.’ Ara once again said a prayer of thanks. The tension in her body loosened, and her eyelids slipped close. She mentally spoke to her babies in her belly,
’My babies, you’ve been through so much...but I promise I won’t let you go through this anymore.’
Each time she thought that even if she died now, it would not make any difference as the cursed stone would take her after a year, but when she’d recall the little ones she was currently carrying, she pushed herself forward to fight for her life.
Her pregnancy had come so suddenly and unexpected, but she now felt without it, she would have given up right on the cliff where Ellyn captured her.
When Merek finally walked far away from the burning forest, he slowed down his pace and worriedly looked down at Ara, his voice trembling with concern, he asked, "Your majesty, are you alright?"
Ara managed to crack open her heavy eyelids and looked up at Merek, before nodding her head lightly to assure him.
Merek sighed in relief. He had been worried sick when he saw the forest on fire earlier. But thank God Ara was alive or else Findara would have burned down to ruin if Hamon found out that his wife was dead.
Ara relaxed and finally fell into unconsciousness, she could now sleep in peace. Hopefully when she woke up next, she would meet her husband soon. She missed him so much...
__
Back at the borders, the battle was over and the battlefield was filled with bodies and remnants of the horrid gore that had taken place. Hamon had led the Findara army to victory, and when the Dumberton soldiers saw how he was dominating the battlefield and killing his opponents ruthlessly, they retreated and fled.
However, despite the battle being over Hamon still refused to return to the border camp as he hadn’t seen his wife yet. She was supposed to have arrived a day before yesterday based on the distance, but then he hadn’t heard anything from his troops who were escorting her back to the borders.
It was starting to make him worry, and he hadn’t seen Cornell show up at the war the entire time. What if he had gone after his wife again?
As Hamon stood at the edge of the border, Henry watched him from atop the parapet walls. He had noticed how Hamon had been anxiously standing there ever since the war ended a few hours ago. Hamon had been fighting for days, and hadn’t even bothered to rest.
"I think it would be best we lead some troops to go and see what is keeping them this long." Olivier suggested to Henry, who was quick to nod his head in agreement, "Yes, something isn’t right, it has been five days now, and the journey is only three days long. I’ll go and speak with his majesty."
After saying that Henry stepped down the parapet walls. Although he had a few injuries on his body, he did not let it show as he walked towards Hamon.
The battlefield wasn’t cleared yet, and there were still some captured enemy soldiers, who would be dealt with later.
"Your majesty, if you’re worried about my sister’s safety, then allow me to lead some men to go and check what is keeping them." Henry said, he was also beginning to worry about Ara.
With eyes still looking ahead, Hamon replied, "There is no need, you’re injured, I will go by myself. They_" Hamon’s words died in his throat as he noticed one of the soldiers he had assigned to escort his wife back rushing towards the border on his horse.
Hamon noticed the soldier’s harried expression and the anxiety in his heart increased when he did not see Ara’s procession in sight.
The soldier’s horse stopped in front of the pair, and as soon as the soldier dismounted his horse, Hamon pulled his collar, "Where is my wife?" Any other question had been foregone and he went straight to the most important question. His eyes drifted around in search of Ara’s carriage, which might be nearby while still holding the soldier’s collar.
When the soldier didn’t speak, Hamon shot him a glare, but still he hesitated to speak. "..."
"Are you deaf, soldier, his majesty just asked you a question. Speak!" Henry rebuked.
The soldier quickly fell to his knees, as he could no longer withstand the overwhelming aura radiating from the pair, he bowed his head, such that his forehead was touching the bloody ground, "...mercy, your majesty. We tried our best, but we couldn’t save her from the fire."
Hamon looked down at the soldier with slight confusion, he then asked, "What do you mean you couldn’t save her from the fire?"
The soldier spoke again with fear evident on his face,"...we were supposed to have arrived at the border, but we received the news about lord Cornell heading to Bredon to seek for help, but her majesty was determined to stop him by herself...her majesty was successful in killing him, but...the fire, we couldn’t save her, the entire forest was on fire...she died with the rest of the troops." He spoke with his voice trembling.
Blood drained from Hamon’s face, "...you mean my wife is dead?" He asked in disbelief.
"Y-yes, your majesty."
