Chapter 289: The end of Cornell

Chapter 289: The end of Cornell

"If this will be where I die, then I refuse to go alone!"

Cornell snapped at his soldiers. The fire would keep the hidden soldiers on the trees away, and if it didn’t, then he would take everyone of them with him to hell instead. Nothing would stop him now.

Cornell’s two soldiers seemed to understood his intentions and bowed deeply,

"...understood, my lord!"

Ara quickly raised her hand and aimed her bow at the soldier holding the torches, but Cornell moved much faster than her, he swung his sword, shattering her bow. She hurriedly tossed the broken bow aside and drew out her sword from her waist, but it had limited range and she was forced to move closer to Cornell than she would like.

Being close to him in a close combat, she was also vulnerable to the arrows flying towards him as well. Ara’s troops tried their best not to shoot at her, but she was forced to deflect some that came her way.

Ara swiftly dodged all the rain of arrows as she fought with Cornell, and when the arrows started coming down with even more force, she had no choice but to move away from Cornell. Meanwhile, her troops had managed to shoot down one of the men holding the torches, nevertheless the other one risked his life and set fire to the surroundings.

The fire started out as small crackers, but grew into a roaring range of redness and heat. As the fire began to spread, Ara’s troops were forced to run out of their hiding places.

The flame reached a large tree, and as it started to burn, its foundation eventually weakened, and fell to the ground with a mighty crash, shaking the ground like a tornado.

The soldier who carried out the orders to set the fire was no longer visible in the flame as the large tree crashed down.

"Cough! Cough!"

Ara coughed when the smoke began to cloud the forest, she covered her mouth with the back of her hand to stop it from entering her lungs. Billows of black clouds filled the sky, and the smoke obscured Ara’s troops vision, none of them could even see clearly to fire their arrows at Cornell anymore.

Ara whirled around her surroundings, "Where the hell did he disappear to?" She could not afford to let Cornell slip away, she had to finish him here before he crossed the borders of Bredon.

As Ara was about to walk towards the other side in search of Cornell, she picked up a faint sound from behind her, then instinctively whirled around and lifted her sword to block the surprise attack that came at her from behind.

She saw Cornell’s face as well as his sword glinting menacingly in his right hand. He continued a series of frenzied attacks, forcing Ara backwards with his heavy hit on her sword.

Clang! Clang!

She barely managed to fend the attacks when she heard several voices calling out to her from afar, "Your majesty, where are you? Are you all right?!"

It was Merek’s voice, but Ara and Cornell knew what it meant. It meant Merek and his troops had finished defeating the rest of Cornell’s soldiers, and they were now searching for Ara in the flame.

Cornell’s face was one of unconcealed disgust, "Pah! I won’t be defeated by a little girl like you! Not in this lifetime."

To Cornell, Ara was merely a tool used by Hamon. Never in his life did he think a woman would one day pose such a threat to his existence. And today, If he allowed this little girl defeat him...then let the heavens make him a dog in his next life! He mused.

Ara’s green eyes flashed murderously as she spoke, "I have sworn to be the one to take your life, for years, I have waited for this moment. And I, will be the one to kill you today!"

It was then that Cornell realized something, this young lady seemed to bear a deep resentment for him. He hadn’t even done anything to her household yet, so why was she after his life now?

"Why do you hold a deep grudge against me?" He asked with his brows pulled together in bemusement.

"You are a devil in a human form, you ruthlessly killed the people I care about right in front of my eyes. You took away everything I ever cared about In my life!"

Clang!

Their sword collided sending sparks in the air. Ara’s green eyes reflected the burning flames around them as she stared at Cornell’s fierce grey orbs unblinkingly.

"Kill the people you cared about? Hah, you must be out of your mind young lady. Yes, I do plan to wipe away your household, but I haven’t touched any of the Boxton’s yet. But here you are after my life!"

"No, not ever! I will prevent you from taking any of them in the future!"

Ara’s words were incomprehensible to Cornell, but he did not bother wasting time with further questioning her as he thought she was starting to lose her head. Perhaps she was doing this for her husband, he knew the world was filled with people who held a grudge against him, and this young woman was merely another one in the line.

Cornell smirked, "You know, even if I die here, Findara will still be in ruin, and I won’t be the one to cause that, but your beloved husband." He said smugly as he swung his sword at Ara and she blocked it, "What do you mean?" She asked.

"I mean, you will die here tonight. And Hamon seems to be madly in love with you, so if you die here with your unborn child...it would torment him for the rest of his life, and he will be the one to destroy Findara with his own hands."

Cornell knew how his nephew was, and if he could not be the king, then he would never allow Hamon remain on the throne as well!

Ara’s forehead creased deeply, "That is if I allow you kill me again!"

"Kill you again? I must have killed you before in your nightmare, and I will make that a reality for you little girl!"

Cornell’s sword whirled like a violent storm, even though Ara’s troops were nearby, the flames made it impossible for them to approach, because Ara and Cornell were fighting right in the middle of the burning forest.

Cornell could make quick work of her if she wasn’t careful.

"Ha!" Ara struggled to parry each of Cornell’s attacks, if she did not do anything soon, she would eventually perish with him in the fire.

Ara did not want to die yet, she wanted to return to her husband and also give birth to her children, she couldn’t die in the hands of this devil!

The last words Cornell said to her in her previous life before he killed her flashed through her mind,

_’Even if the heavens grant you another chance in life, you’d never be able to kill me!’

Ara did her best to focus her attacks on Cornell’s injured left shoulder. No matter how powerful he was, his left side was now vulnerable.

However, Cornell sent a strong kick to her delicate body, and she staggered backwards and fell to the ground. He slowly advanced towards her while she struggled to push herself up with her sword as her body was starting to reach it’s limit.

"Ha ha ha ha!" His laughter echoed in her ears, and it sent a slight chill down her spine as she realized he had laughed like this before he had killed her in their pervious life.

Her breath came in shallowed gasps, he was right in front of her, but she had no more strength left in her body to even lift a finger. She had endured all the exhaustion through out this arduous journey and came all the way here, but her physical limit had reached it’s peak.

However, Cornell wasn’t in peak condition either, red blood streamed from his left wounded shoulder where the arrow had pierced him earlier. His footsteps stopped in front of her and he raised his sword high with one hand, "Didn’t I tell you to run while you can, little girl? Now your time is up, goodbye!"

His sword swung downwards. At that moment, everything passed in slow motion, Ara recalled how he had killed her in their last life. He had beheaded her then, and right now the events was playing out the same way as they did then. Except_

She gritted her teeth and used all the strength left in her to roll her body in the other direction. Cornell’s sword cut through empty air where her neck was a moment ago.

And before Cornell could turn to raise his sword again, Ara gripped her own sword and flipped upwards, piercing Cornell’s back.

"Aug!" Cornell immediately raised his right hand in an attempt to kill Ara again, but she let out a strong cry and drove her sword forward, "GO TO HELL WHERE YOU BELONG!"

Her blade slid clean through his stomach and came out from his back. Cornell’s eyes widened, and he looked down at the sword in his stomach with shock, his sword fell from his hand to the ground, blood spurting out of his mouth.

"...you_!" He tried to speak with blood spurting out of his mouth, but Ara twisted the sword in his stomach before pulling it out. After a moment, his body slowly toppled sideways. He collapsed to the forest ground, his eyes open and unmoving.

Ara’s sword also slid away from her hand.

After all those years, she had finally killed Cornell.

"Haah!" She could no longer even stand properly, and her feet gave in underneath her and she sank to the ground as the smoke surrounding her began to get into her lungs. It was all over, she succeeded in taking her revenge in this lifetime, now her family and kingdom would be safe...

Ara completely collapsed on the ground facing upwards. She stared at the black smoke hovering over the forest with moistened eyes. The flame towered around her, and it moved slowly towards where she lay motionless, she could feel the heat on her skin, but she didn’t have any energy left in her to escape the fire.

’...I don’t want to die here...’

She remembered Hamon’s worried expression before he departed to Findara that day. If she died here now, he would be miserable...

Ara smiled bitterly, she wanted to go back home so badly, to her husband, father, and siblings, but she could not even move a limb from the ground, and her eyelids were getting heavier and heavier.

Perhaps this was her end, she did not even get to give birth to the lives growing inside her.

’My babies...’ Ara’s vision began to turn blurry as all the sounds of the cracking burning trees began to fade away as well. She could no longer hold on, slowly, she let herself sink into the darkness drawing her in.
