Chapter 288: I refuse to go alone!
However, nothing was more disadvantageous than a continuous volley of arrows, and before Cornell’s men could approach the people hidden in the forest, almost half of them were struck dead by the arrows.
The rest of the soldiers made it into the forest and the sounds of swords clashing in the air filled the area. Cornell determinedly pulled out his sword, he shouted into the burning night air, "Find those bastards and kill them all! If they don’t come out from their hiding places, Set the trees on fire to drive them out!"
"Yes, my Lord!"
Although the fire was bad for both sides, Cornell was concerned because he only had few soldiers left with him now. Before Cornell could even move, an arrow flew towards him, he did not have the time to dodge it completely and it grazed passed his left arm.
Cornell cursed under his breath as he felt the burning sensation of the cut on his upper left arm. Another arrow flew towards his head again, but luckily he was fast to strike it down with his sword, however, another one came at him again as if the mysterious person had anticipated all his moves.
Cornell’s expression turned ugly as he realized these were no ordinary skills! He could sense it as he blocked the arrows, and the person wasn’t only shooting one arrow at a time, but three at once!
Unlike the battlefield with a large number of enemies, this person shooting at him was moving as an individual and had particular interest in his life. He realized if he did not stop the person, an arrow would eventually find it’s mark on him.
Cornell quickly spoke to the soldiers next to him, "That direction! Find the person hiding there and bring the person to me immediately!"
"Yes, my Lord!" The soldiers rushed towards the direction Cornell pointed at. However, the moment they went there, sounds of swords and screams came from the direction. Then it went silent.
Swiiish!
But soon arrows began flying towards Cornell again. He could tell that all the soldiers he sent were dead as the person resumed to rain arrows towards him.
’Who the hell is that with such frightening skills?!’
The solders he brought with him were the strongest in Landow, but it was clear they were not as good as the mysterious figure attacking him from the forest.
Cornell felt the burning pain on his left arm, but he ignored the wound as he could not continue to leave this battle to his incompetent solders, his opponent was a powerful one, and he had to be the one to get rid of the person.
Cornell looked in the direction where the arrows came from and said, "I will go and deal with the person myself!"
"Yes, my lord, I’ll follow."
Six solders in total followed Cornell as he headed towards the direction.
Swiish!
Another set of arrows whistled in the air, and one of it struck into the center of a solder’s forehead. And Cornell’s men went from six to five. His mouth twisted, but anyone could tell it was not a happy smile.
He held out his hand towards a solder and spoke indifferently, "Your torch."
"Y-yes, my lord!" The solder quickly handed his torch to Cornell, who took it with his wounded left hand, and when another arrow flew towards him again, Cornell swiftly blocked it once again with the sword in his right hand.
Cornell tossed the torch in the same direction of the arrow, the torch flew in the air before striking a tree causing a huge fire in the forest. It finally revealed the face of the person hiding in the darkness.
Red hair that glowed like rubies, fair skin and delicate features like that of an angel that descended from above, the flame illuminating on her face made her even more alluring, however along with that, was a brutally determined aura of killing.
Cornell was stunned beyond words, and his jaw dropped in disbelief, but he soon recovered from his momentary shock and smiled, "Well, well, well, who would have thought my prey is the one after my life now? How ironic." He had foolishly assumed that she had fled to the borders with her husband. He never thought she was the one after his life.
Unbelievable!
Ara returned his smile, then spoke calmly, "We finally meet again Cornell." She disregarded any sense of respect for the man, because he did not deserve it in any way. In all her encounters with Cornell she had always hidden her desire for vengeance, this will be the moment where she would face him to kill him in this lifetime.
Ara had spent countless nights dreaming of the moment she would finally get back at Cornell, and now, it was time to make it a reality. She raised her hand and aimed at him with her bow, "Any last words, Cornell?"
She had already died by his hand once...she had no intention of dying by his hands again!
Cornell stared at Ara with a wry smile, "I can see that you are a great fighter, but do you think that is enough to kill me? Don’t you think those ambitions of yours are too high, young lady?"
Not only was Cornell an excellent commander, but he was one of the most powerful swordsmen on the continent, he had never been defeated in combat. And Ara herself was well aware of that fact, but her gaze was unbroken as she stared back at him.
"Well, Cornell you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, you never know what this young lady could do to you." Ara remarked nonchalantly as she stood her ground. She already knew how dangerous this man was from a lifetime ago. But that did not change her mind, no matter what happened today...she was going to win.
Swiiish_ she let loose her arrows, it veered in the air and whistled past Cornell’s face and headed for the soldier near Cornell, it pierced the soldier’s neck, and he fell to the ground with a gurgle.
The arrow had taken an unexpected trajectory, and Cornell realized that the soldier near him had been her intended target not him.
Even the most skillful soldiers could not cope with multiple enemies on their own. Ara’s goal was to kill the soldiers first to be able to deal with Cornell alone.
Cornell’s face contorted in fury, "Surround that wench, don’t let her go. Show her what the price is for attempting to take my life!"
"Understood, my lord!"
She could not stop every one of them with her arrows, and they would eventually catch her before she’d kill them all. Besides, all her troops were busy at the other side of the forest fighting. Cornell would teach her a lesson of her life, he would make sure she regretted ever crossing him!
Four of Cornell’s soldiers walked forward to Surround Ara, but she sidestepped them and fled with feline-quick movement. The night was dark, and the moment she was past the glow of the raging fire, she vanished from their sight.
Cornell had a feeling that she was doing this purposely, ’We are still playing in the palm of her hands!’ he ran forward to close the distance, beckoning his soldiers to the direction Ara had disappeared to.
However, as they ran to the direction, another arrow shot out of the darkness and took the life of another soldier. The number of Cornell’s guards decreased from four to three. But despite that, he still remained unperturbed while she kept dodging away from him in the darkness.
All Cornell could see was Ara’s silhouette swiftly running around the forest. Rage built up in him as he couldn’t catch up to her, he spoke through gritted teeth,
"Foolish girl, you will soon regret not running when you had the chance!"
Finally, the three soldiers including Cornell, managed to corner Ara, her delicately beautiful face was illuminated in the flickering light of the flame.
Swiish swiish
Out of nowhere, dozens of arrows began to rain down on Cornell again. He cursed under his breath as he saw the volley of arrows coming at him.
"My lord! Look out!" The soldiers rushed to protect him. Because of this, he managed to escape several arrows, but one of the arrows pierced through his left shoulder this time, "Aug!" He groaned in pain, and whirled around to look at his surroundings.
Until now, he was only focused on hunting Ara, but now more archers were aiming at him from the dark. His expression turn grave, "She was the bait to lure us here!"
Ara chuckled darkly as she set her bow, then spoke, "Too bad you noticed this too late Cornell."
This was Ara’s plan right from the start, she had made Cornell believe that she was running away from him, but in truth she was pulling them deep inside the forest to where her troops were hidden on the trees. She knew if she used herself as a bait, Cornell would foolishly chase after her.
While Cornell was a man who was terrifyingly strong, his hubris let him become too confident of his skills, and this had made him fall into her traps.
"Just like I said, Cornell, you never knew what I can do. Power and strength is not the only thing that a soldier has to have to fight a battle, a battle can also be fought by using your head." Ara beckoned to her troops, and before Cornell could speak, another volley of arrows streaked through the trees.
Cornell quickly grabbed the dead body of a soldier who had already died for him and used it as a shied. He then let out a bout of laughter. The scene of him laughing right before his death, backlit by the hellish flames were horrific, "Yes, indeed, you have been using your head, but you have overlooked something, young lady!"
Cornell had overlooked one fact, the war would not end if he captured Ara, but if he lost here, it was all over, and Ara’s goal had been to kill him above all else.
However, Ara herself had over looked one fact as well. Because she was bait, she was in a range of Cornell’s attack. Cornell barked an order to his two last guards by his side, "Throw the torches and set the entire place on fire!"
"My lord...!"
"If this will be where I die, then I refuse to go alone!"
