Wife of The Demon Prince -
Chapter 287: Burn down the forest!
Chapter 287: Burn down the forest!
As Ara and her troops pursued Cornell towards Bredon, she recalled the last battle she fought against Cornell and his slayers in the past. It was a battle where Ara painstakingly planned on her own to kill every single one of the men who raped and killed Anne in their previous life.
Afterwards, Ara went after Cornell in the palace, she was confident she could win then, every advantage was in her favour, and her sword fighting skills was at it’s peak. But yet...
She was beheaded and killed by Cornell. She would never forget those final moments when his blade cut through her flesh. Compared to then, she was in a worse position now. She hadn’t recovered fully, nor slept well recently, not to mention her condition. While she was much stronger than when she first returned to the past, she wasn’t confident enough to say that she could beat Cornell now.
But there was one significant change, the situation now was more urgent than ever before. She was doing this for her family. Hamon, her unborn children...
’...I can’t afford to lose to him again!’
In the past she had hunted down Cornell to exactt her bitter revenge, but she was the only potential casualty. This time, she had people who were important to her. The difference was enormous.
Ara’s horse was moving in a slow pace, she looked around to see the rest of her troops. Since they had no idea which road Cornell had gone, the troops were divided into two groups to quickly get to Cornell. They swept every single path that would lead to Bredon from Landow.
At last, one of the soldiers on Merek’s group approached her on his horse, "Your majesty, we have finally located Lord Cornell!"
"Where is he?" Her green eyes flashed in the dark night. It was finally time to settle the decade-long grudge.
The soldier led Ara to the location, and she soon spotted Cornell’s group from the distance. As expected, he had a little over a hundred soldiers swiftly moving with him towards Bredon’s borders. They were supposed to catch up on them, but Ara was not sure if more of his men might be in hiding.
However, they couldn’t waste time waiting, only a little distance and Cornell would soon reach Bredon. She had to get rid of him before then.
Another soldier approached Ara from behind and reported, "Your majesty, we have scouted the terrain as you ordered, the roads ahead are only forest roads."
"That’s good, Thank you." She thanked the soldiers and they all bowed to her respectfully.
Ara began to silently map out what actions they would take next, and she made her decision. She looked towards the soldiers and spoke calmly, "From here on out, we will need to sneak ahead into the side forest. There aren’t many of Cornell’s soldiers, so we can confuse and scatter them while concealing our numbers. It will give us an advantage in the beginning of the fight..."
The soldiers nodded their heads in understanding as they listened to Ara’s plans. Although, tracking Cornell up to this point had been an exhausting journey, they had come so far away from Findara’s borders, and it wouldn’t be easy for them to overtake Cornell. Nevertheless, now that victory of the war depended on them, the increased impossibility of the task only made them more determined to succeed. And If they don’t...
Besides, they had confidence in Ara, her plans were clever. It would be easier to stay hidden in the forest and take Lord Cornell’s troops by surprise than attacking straight up.
If the soldiers removed all Cornell’s men from around him, it would be easier for her to kill him. Ara thought as she looked around the soldiers she had become familiar with in a short period of time. They all looked determined. Her green eyes met Merek’s dark ones and he nodded in agreement,
"That’s a good plan, Your majesty."
Ara resumed to speak, "Until they get near us, we will attack them with arrows. Once the battle inevitably moves to close combat...please, try not to get killed or hurt as much as possible."
Ara was not only worried about the success of their plan, but of the soldiers lives as well. The soldiers also had families waiting on them to return home safely, some must even have wives and children waiting on them. Their lives also matter as much as hers.
The soldiers looked at her in silent astonishment, and she continued to speak again making eye contact with the ones in front, "let us all return alive."
The soldiers bowed their heads simultaneously to express their deep gratitude to their queen.
--
The forest darkness pressed in on all sides of the soldiers who traversed it. The night was pitch dark accompanied by the cold night, chilly winds were blowing making the soldiers shiver due to it. Cornell and his soldiers continued to travel through the forest roads not making any stops despite the bone chilling cold. Their destination was not far from here now, and so they slowed their horses pace.
Ulric’s horse came to walk side by side with Cornell’s and when he spoke, breath vapor could be seen emanating from his mouth, "My Lord, what if the king of Bredon refuses to lend us his army?" He asked worriedly.
"He dare not after he has given his words to come any time I need his help. Why do you think he refused to ally with Hamon? It’s because he’s already with me right from the start." Cornell remarked confidently.
Cornell had already spoken with the king of Bredon even before Hamon went there to ask for his support. And now, all he had to do was to get there and request to lead their army, and the king would agree. Ulric’s concern was normal, since none of his men knew how much connection he had made with the king’s of various kingdoms. Right now, getting to Bredon on time was important.
Cornell spoke again, "Let’s hurry, I will have to finish gathering the army of Bredon before king Evan’s deadline, and he loses any more of his nerves."
He knew if he did not hurry up, things would turn ugly in the battlefield. His plans before was to chase Ara down and kill her, but then he received the news that she had returned to Findara with Hamon somehow. That idiotic nephew of his was smart enough to quickly flee with his wife before he even got to them. Now he had to quickly gather the Bredon army and return to the battlefield to finish this up, he would get his hands on Ara after that.
"Yes, my Lord!" Ulric said then turned to bark orders at the rest of the soldiers following behind, "Increase your pace, we_!" He did not get to finish his words when an arrow flew out of nowhere and struck straight to his throat.
"Gguk!" He gave a gargled choke and toppled over rolling down from the horse, before landing bodily on the ground, dead.
Cornell and the rest of his soldiers were momentarily shocked by the sudden attack, but half a second later, they recovered and snapped into alert, "The enemies! Get in formation!" All the soldiers encircled Cornell to guard against the hail of arrows flying towards them.
Swiii! Swiii!
The soldiers who couldn’t block the arrows with their swords, blocked it with their bodies. Cornell was confounded as a flurry of attacks poured around him and his men. It was as if someone had been waiting for them.
Who the hell...!
Bredon hadn’t been in his plans from the start, and had only been a last minute decision when he received the news that Hamon was dominating the battlefield. Even if the information had been leaked to Hamon, his men would not have reached them in such a short amount of time, the immediacy of the attack only meant the person was already in Landow not from Findara!
Who the hell could it be?! Where did the person come from?!
Nevertheless, Cornell did not have time to speculate, the invisible assassins were taking out his soldiers one by one in the pitch black night, he could not figure out how many enemies were there in hiding, nor did he know which direction the arrows were coming from.
Cornell gritted his teeth in anger. They want to play hide and seek, right? Then he would seek them out! He mused then yelled at his soldiers, "Set fire to the forest! Burn down the forest and destroy every single one of them!"
Cornell’s soldiers quickly obeyed his command and threw their torches to set the forest on fire. Because it was fall season and there were a lot of fallen dried leaves, even a small flame grew to a fierce blaze. Cornell’s plan banished the darkness and helped the soldiers determined the direction the arrows were coming from, and they rushed towards the people hidden in the forest.
However, nothing was more disadvantageous than a continuous volley of arrows, and before Cornell’s men could approach the people hidden in the forest, almost half of them were struck dead by the arrows.
