Chapter 286: Fight for our land

Ara took a calming breath and organized her thoughts. She waited until Merek returned to the carriage side before ordering the coachman to stop, on her orders all the soldiers escorting her also stopped and turned to look at her in bemusement.

Ara stepped down the carriage at the same time Merek dismounted his horse, "Are you alright, your majesty?" He questioned in concern since Ara had not demanded for a stop through out their journey, but now in the middle of nowhere.

Ara nodded then asked, "I heard that Cornell is heading to Bredon, is that true?"

Merek replied, "Yes, your majesty. We plan to cross the border with you first, before I turn back to lead the troops to stop him_"

"No, if it’s true, there is no need to cross the border anymore." She said calmly.

Merek blinked in surprise, "What?" Hamon had personally instructed him that if anything went wrong, Ara’s safety should be their biggest priority, she must be brought back to him unharmed. And now what was she trying to do? He mused.

Ara explained further, "If we let Cornell bring Bredon to this war, they will be too powerful for Findara to stop alone.

It was a dangerous risk that they could not afford to risk. Findara could manage Dumbarton and Landow, even though they were formidable enemies, but the involvement of Bredon could easily tip the scale the other way.

’Even if Hamon controls the battlefield now...He would not be able to have the upper hand if Bredon enters the picture.’

They would not just lose_they would suffer total defeat. Not only will Findara be ruled by the enemies, but their people would become slaves to the enemies. If Cornell still remains, there wouldn’t be any guarantee that they would be safe.

The only way to make sure that her families and citizens of Findara remained alive was to get rid of the root of the conflict.

Cornell!

Merek spoke up again, looking unconvinced, "If we don’t take you back to Findara, where will you be if I lead the troops to go and stop lord Cornell?"

"I will be the one to lead you all to stop him." She declared with a determined expression.

Merek was taken aback, "What? You are not in the condition to_"

"Don’t underestimate my capabilities, Merek." She cut him off firmly, then said, "If we don’t move to stop him now, and insist on crossing the borders with me first, it would be too late by then, he would already be in Bredon."

"But you are he’s target, if he finds out that you haven’t yet crossed the borders, he would try his best to see that you are held hostage again." Merek tried to reason with her. But Ara smirked,

"Do you know the story of rattan sneakers?" She asked.

Almost every soldier would have heard about the story. It was a mythical story about people who snuck into enemies territory, invading by tricking their enemies to open the gates.

Ara thought that their position was not much different from the story. Cornell must have believed that they had crossed the borders by now, but in truth they were still in the Landow territory.

She continued to speak, "Think about it, according to the spy, Cornell is headed towards Bredon without anyone knowing, while sending his troops to Findara, this means he would have only a few soldiers escorting him to Bredon so he could move discreetly."

"I suppose so..."

"Moreover, Cornell may not even consider the fact that his plans have been leaked by the spy Hamon planted among his troops." Her green eyes glistened sharply, "Now that we know that he is traveling with limited protection, we can not afford to let him slip away."

"You mean..." Merek’s eyes widened in realization, and Ara gave a nod, "That’s right, now is the perfect time to assassinate Cornell."

She had more than a few hundreds of soldiers escorting her, and Cornell’s forces would not be much different in size. She could not let this golden opportunity to remove him from the face of the earth slip away from her. If she did not kill him now, he would continue to raze a path towards the throne, and anyone in his way would be in danger.

It was no different for the children growing in her belly. One day, maybe if she was no more even her children’s lives would be threatened by Cornell. She may find temporary safety in fleeing to the borders, but the root of the danger would always lurk and hunt them down.

She was determined to complete her previous life’s mission, he was the cause of all her misfortune in the past, the cause of her grief, loneliness, she would not allow herself ever lose to him again in this lifetime.

Ara knew that by taking these steps, it would be a risk to her pregnancy, but avoiding the situation would not make them safer either, she could not allow him bring Bredon into this war, which in turn would threaten the lives of all the people in Findara. For a better future, she was willing to risk anything to finish this once and for all!

She continued to speak to the stunned Merek, "We can’t return to Findara without stopping Cornell, if we allow him reach the borders of Bredon, our kingdom will be doomed. We have to move the troops as soon as possible, are you with me?"

"..." Merek did not immediately respond. She was right, but then how could he risk her life for this when he had promised to bring her back to Findara safe and sound? He truly admire her confidence, despite being the queen, not to mention being pregnant, she wouldn’t hide in the safety of her troops, But instead she was determined to stop Cornell. Merek was aware of the danger, however he could not bring himself to refuse her for the sake of their kingdom.

Merek thought for a while, before bowing, "Yes, your majesty!"

Ara smiled faintly at his answer. She lifted her head high as she addressed the other soldiers, "I know you all must be exhausted, I am as well. But as you all have heard, it is no exaggeration to say that the victory in this war now rests in our hands. To protect the citizens of Findara and the people important to us, let us be the ones to bring an end to this war!" She declared in a loud voice for all of them to hear.

The few hundreds of elite soldiers simultaneously knelt together on the ground, "We will fight for our land, your majesty!"

Seeing all the soldiers determination, the corner of her lips pulled up in satisfaction. And so, they began to make plans on how to chase Cornell down.
