Chapter 284: What happened to my father?!
"Eat more." Hamon said to Ara as she only ate little from the food he had brought for her after she woke up.
"...my stomach seems unused to eating too much." She remarked as she put down the bowl of soup. She had not eaten something like this in a long time, and it felt so good to finally have food other than tasteless porridge. However, she could not bring herself to eat more, as it made her feel sick in the stomach. But then she tried to eat more to not make Hamon worry.
At first when she saw Hamon the moment she woke up, she had thought it to be a dream until she felt his strong arms wrapped her in a warm embrace, the warmth of his arms which she had longed for all those days in the dungeon. She couldn’t help but feel at ease, warmth swelled her heart, and it felt like she was back home.
Hamon had remained hugging her for a long while, he only let go after her stomach made a rumbling sound. She recalled how he had worriedly looked down at her stomach at first, before realizing the rumbling sound was due to hunger, and quickly went out to bring various delicacies for her to eat.
And now Hamon just worriedly stared at her as she ate little portions of each delicacies.
"Here, have some water." He handed her a cup of water when he noticed she’d almost choked. Ara took the cup muttering a, "Thank you." Before gulping down the entire content down her throat.
After emptying the cup of water, she felt she couldn’t eat anymore and said, "I am full..." She had felt Hamon’s gaze on her the whole time she had been eating, but did not mind it at all, as she had also missed his affectionate gaze as well.
Hamon simply cleared the dishes from her front and set them aside, before turning to ask, "How are you feeling now?"
"I feel better than_" Ara’s words cut short as she remembered something. "I am pregnant, Hamon, how’s my child? Is it alive?" She asked worriedly as she pressed a hand to her small bump. A physician must have attended to her judging from the bandage on her head while she was unconscious, and certainly he would have reported if her unborn child was safe or not.
"..."
When Hamon didn’t speak and only glanced down at her with an unreadable expression, she felt her anxiety increased. "Hamon...is something wrong with my unborn child?" She asked worriedly.
Hamon strode towards Ara on the bed, he took her hand in his, then said in a soft tone, "You worry too much, my wife, it’s not good for the babies."
Ara sighed in relief before realizing what Hamon just said, "Babies?" She asked with a raised brows.
Hamon nodded his head with a smile, "Yes, you’re carrying twins, my wife,"
"Twins? Isn’t it too early to detect that?" She asked in slight bemusement. She was just about three months pregnant, was It possible for the physician to detect it this soon? She mused.
"Well, the physician I got to treat you is a well-known Doctor in all the lands. He’s an expert who is capable of detecting that from two months. So, you’re indeed carrying twins, my wife." He explained with a faint smile.
"...!" Ara’s eyes widened in disbelief. This means Emma’s dreams about her having twins were true? Could this also be the reason for her bump growing bigger? But Hamon, was he happy about this? She knew he did not want them to have a child in the first place because he did not want to pass his demon blood to his offspring. She wondered what he thought about it now...
She glanced at Hamon, and said, "Are you happy about this? I know you don’t want us to have a child in the first place, and now I will be having two, i_"
Ara did not get to complete her words before Hamon leaned down and pressed his lips on hers, he kissed her lightly before pulling back. Ara just stared at him wide eyed, and he gently flicked her forehead, "Silly girl. Didn’t I just tell you not to worry anymore in your condition? This..." He placed his large hand on her belly, then continued affectionately, "Is a blessing to me, to us. I don’t know how to describe it to you, but this news is the second most expensive gift I have ever received in this lifetime. And I want to thank you for staying with me despite knowing what I am." He raised her hand to his lips and pressed his lips on her knuckle.
"..."
Ara felt her throat tighten with emotions, and her eyes stung with tears. She couldn’t describe her joy, and yet again her sadness at the same time. What would happen if that stone took her life in a year? How would this man in front of her live his life with two kids?
Ara couldn’t hold back anymore and flung herself into his arms again, burying her head in the crook of his neck, he gladly wrapped his strong arms around her body. Should she just tell him about it now? She couldn’t even bring herself to say it. Perhaps she should wait to hear from Emma first when they returned to the palace.
The palace!
Ara slowly pushed away from the hug, then placed her hands on both his shoulders to sit on her knees on the bed, before asking, "Are we still in Landow or Findara?"
Hamon raised his hand and tucked her red hair behind her ears, "We are still in Landow at the moment. We can’t travel to Findara yet without knowing the state of the war at the borders."
Ara’s eyebrows pulled together, "War? Is there a war going on at the borders of Findara?" She asked in disbelief.
"Well, Cornell waged a war against Findara with the help of king Evan of Dumbarton. Right now, I am not sure about the current state of the war, but I’ve asked Merek to send the messenger pigeon to find out before we depart." He explained briefly, not telling Ara that her father and brother were currently leading the frontline to avoid her from worrying more in her condition. He wanted to see to it that Ara was safe before he’d take over at the frontlines.
Ara grounded her teeth, "That Cornell! He really is a monster. Is he also at the borders now?" She asked. Since she did not see him show up even after knowing about her pregnancy, it could be possible that he wasn’t in Landow, but at the battlefield.
She would make him regret ever laying his hands on her that day!
Sensing his wife’s anger, Hamon frowned in disapproval, "Don’t worry about that man now, you should focus on recovering. I will take care of him myself after the battle."
"But_"
"No buts, now rest some more before Merek returns with the report." He gently pushed back her shoulders to make her lay down on the bed, he then drew the blanket to her neck. Seeing that she wanted to sit up again, he shot her a warning glare, "Lay put, don’t even think about sitting up. You need more sleep."
Ara obediently shrank down into the blanket, without a word of a protest, she closed her eyes. She did not realize she was this exhausted until she closed her eyes and fell asleep within a minute of laying down.
The next time Ara woke up, she felt physically much better. Her exhaustion from earlier was almost none existent, surprisingly, even the pounding in her head and the ankle pain. She pushed her upper body up and sat upright, before looking around the room, but Hamon was no where in sight.
Ara was about to push herself off the bed, when she heard faint voices coming from outside the door. She could make out Hamon’s voice, but could not tell what or who he was talking to nor talking about.
She stood up from the bed and crept towards the door, making sure not to put too much weight on her wounded ankle. The voice became clear as she got closer to the door.
"...Yes, Cornell has sent more of his troops to the battlefield, and more than a quarter of Findara’s army are wiped out..."
It was Merek, she mused as she recognized the other voice. However, what she heard him report next made her stop dead in her tracks.
"...General Richard was struck with an arrow on his lower chest area, and Lord Henry is having a hard time holding up defense at the frontlines."
Ara felt her heart sink with that news. Her father was struck with an arrow?! Dows this mean he was the one leading the army? Her eyes widened with that thought, and without wasting time, she quickly pull the door open and stepped outside, "What happened to my father?" She questioned Merek directly as fear crept up on her at the thought of her father being struck dead with an arrow.
Merek was taken aback at Ara’s appearance, he exchanged glances with Hamon asking permission if he should speak further, and Hamon gave a small nod of his head.
"I just received message from the battlefield that general Richard has been struck with an arrow, but he his being treated. It’s nothing to worry about_"
"I have to go back to Findara immediately, I want to see it with my own eyes that he is alright!" She stated with a serious expression. She could not afford to lose her father in this lifetime no matter what, and she would only feel at ease after seeing that he was alright.
Hamon furrowed his brows in disapproval, "it’s not safe to pass through the borders now, you can’t go back yet_"
"I don’t care, I will fight my way through the battlefield! My father’s life could be in danger, I can’t sit here and do nothing Hamon." She said with tears glistening in her green eyes.
Seeing the tears glimmering in her eyes, Hamon pulled her into his arms, "If you’re worried about father-in-law, then I’ll go ahead first and lead the war to clear the borders before you arrive."
Ara quickly moved back from the hug, "let me go with you_"
"No, you will come with Merek and the others, I will teleport there easily if I am alone." Since he could easily teleport alone, he would go to the battlefield and finish this once and for all while Ara would travel with the carriage and his soldiers. And before they would arrive, he would have made way for his wife to easily pass through without having to fight in her condition.
