Chapter 269: "Who the fuck is there?!"
Ara along with her handmaid and the soldiers set out of the palace to meet Hamon. The road to Bredon wasn’t a smooth road, it had a lot of bumps, and there were high cliffs on either sides of the road. And Ara was sure if Hamon was on his way back, he’d also pass by this same way.
Ara’s carriage was moving near the cliffs, it was a spontaneous outing that hadn’t been planned in advance. The carriage rattled as it moved through the bumpy path under the protection of the soldiers. Ara placed her hand on her stomach, something she had been doing lately even without realizing it,
"We will meet your father soon..." She muttered with a small smile. She wondered if the king of Bredon had agreed to support Findara, or perhaps there had been some delays. But Hamon should have at least sent a letter to let her know if he’d even arrived there safely, however there was no news from him for the past two weeks.
She sighed heavily,’Hamon, I hope you’re alright...’
Soon it was already getting dark and there was no inn close by to make a stop, furthermore they couldn’t afford stopping at some inn and by chance end up missing the king’s procession. Thus, when the soldiers decided to make a camp up ahead, Ara agreed without hesitation.
Upon arriving at the isolated clear area, the soldiers set up tents so Ara could rest comfortably, while some of the soldiers kept guard at the roads in case Hamon’s procession passed by them.
Ara stepped into her cozy lodging, the inside of the tent was warm, contrary to the cold outside. Winter was approaching pretty fast, just in a month, it would start to snow, unfortunately, she had severe cold intolerance, and disliked the winter seasons because of the extra layers of clothing one had to usually wear, she wasn’t a fan of too much heavy attire, which would be uncomfortable for the whole three months. She mused and rubbed her cold palms together as she thanked the soldiers who opened the tents, "Thank you."
The soldiers bowed, "You’re welcome, Your majesty, please rest well. We will be outside if you need anything." The soldiers left, and only Ara and her handmaid were left inside the tent. At first, she intended to rest for awhile, when a wave of nausea rolled through her stomach, "Uub!"
Ara quickly clapped her hand over her mouth as she felt the food she ate earlier threatened to return.
The servant gave her a nervous pat on the back, "Your majesty, are you alright?" She asked, as she knew nothing about Ara’s pregnancy, she began to panic. "Should I call the guards_"
"No, I am alright_ ugh!"
"Here, have some water, it will..."
Ara quickly shook her head, "No, I think I need some fresh air." Her pregnancy had made her more sensitive to things, and the warm tent felt quite stuffy at the moment.
The maid nodded hastily, "Alright, should I escort you for a walk outside?"
"Yes, please." Ara hurriedly stepped out of the tent despite not liking the cold outside. If Hamon met her in such a condition, she knew it would only make him worry.
Ara and her handmaid took four soldiers with them as they strolled around the area. As they walked down the quiet road, it began to grow darker, as the sun set leaving behind its red halo in the sky. Her mind wandered around in different thoughts, and she decided to clear her mind by studying her surroundings as they walked.
They were currently walking on the high cliffside road, below the cliff was another narrowed path that carriages could pass through as it was a shortcut. Ara was simply taking in their surroundings, when she picked up some faint noises of a conversation coming from somewhere. It was coming from a completely different direction to their tents, so it was probably not the soldiers.
Ara turned towards the direction of the thick bushes, where the faint noise was coming from. An ominous feeling fell over her, and the maid who was walking by her side also seemed to hear the voices, and she turned towards Ara questioningly,
"Your maje_"
"Shh."Ara raised a finger to her lips, and the maid nodded quickly and covered her mouth with both palms. The four soldiers walking with them were also alerted at the voices, and they exchanged hand signals, and began to approach the direction of the noises.
Ara and her handmaid also followed behind them with silent footsteps, and the conversation grew clearer in the air.
"...the rest of the men are currently delaying the monster from returning on time, the roads are blocked up ahead. So we can finish our work quickly before she gets angry again."
"Alright, she has ordered us to set the soldiers in the tents on fire before we take the queen, or else if the king gets here before we take her...He will destroy us."
"Don’t worry, there is no way he will get here on time, his procession is still under attack at the moment, and he’s busy fighting them off. Let’s get on with our business before that wench of a woman gets angry at our failure again."
"I don’t know why master assigned her to lead us on this mission..."
Their conversation blurred out of Ara’s ears as her head began to spin. What were they planning to do? She couldn’t figure out which woman there were referring to, and what exactly were they doing in the bushes, but one thing was clear here, ’They are after me...And also, Hamon is under attack at the moment!’
This was bad! They had to leave this place and go help Hamon!
The smell of fuel immediately filled the air, and Ara exchanged glances with the soldiers, and the soldiers gave each other a silent nod as they understood her signals. It was time to alert the rest in the tent. They all slowly began to back away from the bushes, when_
Snap!
Ara’s handmaid stepped on a branch on the ground. Alerted, the mysterious men in the bushes whirled in their direction with alarmed expressions,
"Who the fuck is there?!"
