Wife of The Demon Prince -
Chapter 240: Changes
Chapter 240: Changes
At the queen’s residence, Merona was in a foul mood after Edwin reported to her about how the crown Prince had jumped down the cliff with his wife.
Merona angrily slammed her fist on the tea table, she snapped,"What the hell! Didn’t I clearly tell them to bring me his dead body? How could they let him jump down the cliff! What sort of incompetent fools am I paying to work for me!"
At Merona’s outrage, Edwin responded with a slightly embarrassed expression, "Sister, please calm yourself down. The men had reported that they were sure to stab the crown Prince with a long poisonous sword, not just the sword, they used that thing you said would weaken him from transforming on the throwing stars. And again, falling down from such a high cliff after all the poisons and injuries...there’s a slim chance of him surviving it." He explained, "I have sent some men to go around and search for the couple’s dead bodies. You shouldn’t worry, it’s only a matter of time before they bring his body to you."
Merona wasn’t still convinced, even though she had given the assassins some poisons that she knew would weaken him from transforming, she wouldn’t be at peace until she saw his dead body. This was the crown Prince they were talking about, he had walked through death countless times before.
She tapped her fingers on the tea table and spoke with a grave expression, "If the crown Prince survives, we will be done for. Furthermore, without his dead body we won’t be able to remove all his soldiers. Those dogs are loyal to him, and we are not sure he is dead yet."
Edwin scoffed internally, he could bet his life on it that the crown Prince was dead already, his sister was just worried for nothing. He had seen how Hamon was stabbed and jumped down the cliff with his wife.
While Edwin believed that they were dead, Merona did not. She had to plan for the worst, she would be in a more dire situation than before if Hamon survived. He might take control of his army in the palace and bring her down.
"Edwin, if Hamon’s body is not found before morning...then we have to seek help from Dumbarton." She declared.
Dumbarton was currently ruled by her elder brother, Evan. However, Evan was known for his greediness, he does nothing for free regardless of family or official relationship. The Dumbarton army was larger than Findara’s, with their assistance, she would easily remove the crown Prince’s soldiers from the palace. But Evan would surely ask for a huge payment in return for his help...
Edwin’s expression turned grave hearing what his sister said about seeking for their brother’s help, "Sister, have you forgotten brother Evan’s nature? He will certainly demand a large price, and you are also well aware that he’s had his eyes on Findara’s lands for years now."
Merona knew about that as well. Evan had wanted to conquer Findara even before he was crowned the king of Dumbarton, but he had only restrained himself because of her marriage to Frederick. Bringing him into this matter could caused crisis because of his greediness, however she had no other options at the moment, she would have to give somethings up to get the results she wanted.
"I will make a deal with Evan...I’ll give him a quarter of Findara’s lands in return of his help. He wouldn’t refuse to give me his army after such an offer."
Edwin was taken aback at his sister’s decision, "Are you sure you want to make such a deal? By making this deal, it means brother will rule quarter of Findara." He reminded her.
Merona nodded, "I know, he is family after all. With his help Cassius would be able to become king. What does such small lands matter if the crown Prince ends up surviving and kills us?"
Merona was willing to do anything and everything to make her son king. And by handing over Findara’s lands to Evan, the people residing there would be his as well, they would be enslaved to Dumbarton’s elites for life. Public sentiment would surely turn against her, but she would have to live with it as long as she got what she wanted. It was a better option than allowing Hamon take control of Findara.
Merona resumed to speak, "I will write the letter to Evan. If Hamon’s body isn’t found by dawn, you have to deliver my message to brother."
"Alright, sister." Edwin bowed. However Merona wasn’t done speaking, she said, "Gather all your troops and block all the exits and entrances in the crown Prince’s residence, make sure no one goes in or out of the building until all our plans are done."
"Understood."
"And again, make sure none of his soldiers know about what is happening around the kingdom, or else they might revolt against us even without the crown Prince. Keep the residence under siege until Dumbarton’s army arrive, then we will finish them all up."
Edwin swallowed dryly at his sister’s command, it would take weeks before the army arrives to Findara, and they would have to keep those crown Prince’s wild dogs from stepping out during those times. He wanted to speak, but decided to stay quiet before she angrily threw something at his face.
Merona stood up from her seat and made to the window, she glanced up at the night sky, and said, "Get on with it. Tomorrow I will inform everyone about the king’s death and his will to give back Cassius his right to the throne." She did not intend to waste more time when she’d already gotten a golden opportunity.
Edwin answered with a deep bow, "Leave everything to me, sister."

The next morning at the crown Prince’s residence.
"Bloody bastards! Screw all your eighth generations to your eighth forefathers. Open the damn gate, you can’t stop us from_" Oliver snapped angrily at the queen’s soldiers blocking the entrance gate and stopping everyone from stepping out, however his outburst only made the soldiers pull out their swords and pointed it to his throat.
"If you don’t get your lousy mouth back inside, it will cost you your life." One of the soldiers, who seemed to be the commander threatened Oliver.
Oliver knew what was best, he swallowed dryly and slowly stepped back away from the gate. They had been excitedly drinking last night and celebrating the crown Prince’s victory, but only to wake up this morning with countless soldiers surrounding the entire compound and stopping them from leaving.
Oliver, had found out about it from the servants who were supposed to go out to the market to refine the food items. And he had come here to ask the soldiers nicely to open the gates, but they ignored him and didn’t even spare him a glance, he had been speaking to them for more than ten minutes, but still they didn’t budge, therefore he got angry and began to curse their generations. However, seeing how he had gotten their attention, and pointing their swords at him, he decided to back off and return inside.
Oliver clenched his teeth in anger, and immediately went in search of Merek, "I wonder where his highness has suddenly gone to." He muttered to himself as he made to Merek’s room corridor.
Ara and Hamon had suddenly disappeared overnight. And a servant had informed them that the king had sent for Hamon last night, and he went with Ara and didn’t return since then. Where could they have gone to now? Not just that, all the exits and entrances of the crown Prince’s residence has been blocked, and no outside information was available at the moment.
Oliver explained everything to Merek, and added, "We have to look for a way out, we can’t sit here while his highness may be in danger."
Merek, who had already known of the situation as well, sighed heavily, "...it won’t be easy, there are too many men out there."
Although, Merek was skilled at sneaking in and out of places, however it was different in this situation, there were countless bowmen surrounding the premises of the crown Prince’s residence, if one should be caught by any chance, they would be taken down by several arrows.
Lines formed between Oliver’s brows, "Without the crown Prince we can’t command his soldiers, we have no other choice but to wait for his return."
Hamon’s soldiers would only attack on his command and nobody else’s. They had no idea what had happened to the crown Prince, and again they couldn’t act rashly, but patiently wait for his return.
Meanwhile, while they were locked inside the crown Prince’s residence, unknown to them the queen had formally announced the king’s death and his will to restore the second Prince’s right to the throne. Thus, Cassius was now out of the dungeon and his succession, restored.
The officials and nobles allied to the king were deeply suspicious and astonished at the sudden turn of events, however without the crown Prince, there was nothing they could do, but stay mute if they wanted to keep their lives. The balance of power in the palace was changing rapidly with the queen in charge, but no one could do anything about it.
