Chapter 184: Under attack (part 2)

Hamon looked up and saw the rain of arrows coming down towards them, he swiftly pulled Ara and flung them to the side. His head whipped in the direction where the arrows came from and he saw countless shadowy figures coming towards them from the darkness. There was only one way since the attackers are coming from the place their carriage was parked.

He quickly pulled Ara and turned towards the forest ahead of the bridge. Ara also noticed the shadowy figures, but as they came to a halt she worriedly glanced up at him, "Don’t worry I’ll get us out of this." He assured.

Hamon then put his fingers in his mouth and whistled loudly. Suddenly there was a loud sound like drumbeat and branches creaking from the dark forest. Ara turned towards the direction and saw Hamon’s white horse, Astral, came galloping to them.

Hamon noticed the men gaining in on them from all the directions, he gritted his teeth in annoyance. Even if he wanted to fight them, they were too many of them coming, and he and Ara couldn’t possibly fight them without any weapons. He glanced up at the sky again.

’Damn it! A moonless night!’

He wouldn’t be able to teleport! A large ambush like this was almost expected during wartime, but this was unheard of right in the heart of the town. He hadn’t expected an ambush, they’d come out without any guards nor weapons! He had no time to waste, moreover his wife was with him, he had to bring her to safety first.

With that thought, Hamon swiftly mounted his horse and extended his hand to Ara, "Hurry we have to leave, wife."

Ara quickly took his hand and flung herself onto the horse behind him, she wrapped her arms around his waist. He then snapped the reins and the horse hooves thundered on the ground as it dashed into the heart of the forest.

One of the assassin yelled out to alarm the rest, "They are getting away, get them!"

Hearing them, Hamon urged his horse to go faster, "Ara, I’ll drop you up ahead closer to the town out of their sight, you can go back home and bring my men while I distract them!" He informed her, but Ara firmly shook her head,

"That’s nonsense, I won’t leave you alone no matter what!" She refused him, as she swiftly took out the dagger inside the pouch hanging on the horse side and fleetly tore the skirt of her dress so it wouldn’t hamper her movement.

They hadn’t come with any weapons, if they had weapons, they’d have at least fought some of the assassins off.

Hamon frowned as he turned his head sideways, but then caught glimpse of her smooth legs, he then said, "You have to listen to me this once, wife. I won’t be able to fight them knowing you’re with me and you’re not in safety, let me_"

"Whatever you say, I will never leave your side, Hamon. I have given you my promise to always stay by you side, so I’m fulfilling that."

Hamon would have been happy to hear those words if they weren’t in danger right now. He didn’t want her getting involved in this fight, the assassins were too much. He couldn’t let anything happen to her on his watch. He suddenly felt anxiety crept over him for the first time, an ominous chill ran through his spine at the thought of his wife getting hurt. He’d have to bring her to safety no matter what she said!

Ara noticed Hamon was riding to the town’s direction, she knew immediately what he was about to do. No, she clenched her jaw, she wouldn’t leave him! If anything happened to him while she was gone to get the soldiers, she wouldn’t be able to forgive herself. Her eyes looked around, and to quickly make him change his direction, she leaned her head against his back and held his waist tightly before pressing her lips on his broad back, She felt his body stiffened at her action,

"Hamon, please don’t let me leave you, I won’t be able to live with myself if you were to get hurt...And there is something i haven’t said to you yet. Let’s fight this together."

She heard him curse under his breath before he worriedly said, "Wife, your safety is more important here_"

"I won’t leave, Hamon. That’s final!" She remarked firmly.

Ara could hear the assassins horses gaining up on them, she turned her head to look behind then whispered warningly in Hamon’s ear, "They are gaining up on us, You have to lose them."

"...Don’t worry, I’ll get us out of this alive." He assured as he simply rode the horse even faster. The chasing men wouldn’t easily catch them, but they had proper weapons in their hands, "Hamon! Arrows on the right!" At her urgent cry, Hamon quickly dodged to the left side. Several arrows flew past them. If Ara had her bow, she could have easily struck them back, but they’d come out not expecting to be suddenly attacked by assassins.

The best Ara could do was alert Hamon which direction the arrows were coming in from, she turned back to Hamon, but kept an eye on the horses catching up on them from the side.

"All we have now is to rely on Astral and your riding skills." She said.

"I’ll do my best."

Ara continued to yell to him the direction of the arrows coming from behind them, and Hamon would immediately dodge to avoid them. The slightest mistake from either of them would have a deadly consequence, but they were both in complete synchronization as they’d trained for such situations in Greenwood in their past life in the army. For now, Ara’s sharp eyesight and Hamon’s ability to ride kept them from being hit by any of the arrows.

The couple were able to successfully avoid the assassins forces longer than expected, but not until the number of them in hot pursuit gradually began to swell to double times more. They soon surrounded the entire forest, arrows began to come in on them from different directions at once, and Ara couldn’t keep up alerting him anymore.

Ara noticed an arrow coming straight at them, "Hamon_" no sooner he tried to dodge the arrow however it flew right at them and ended up hitting Astral at the side, the horse twisted sharply and roared up it’s front legs tossing the pair onto the tall grasslands.
