Chapter 185: Awoken demon (part 1)
As Astral tossed them to the ground, Hamon swiftly covered Ara’s body and rolled her away to avoid the arrows coming at them, many arrows soon struck the ground where they had fallen a moment ago.
After safely dodging all the attacks, Hamon raised up and helped Ara up as well, her beautiful black and gold dress was torn and dirtied from tumbling down the tall grassland, she glanced up at Hamon’s red eyes that seemed to shine in the dark night, even without seeing his face clearly, she could feel the angry waves of fierce energy radiating from him.
However, now wasn’t the best time to stand idly, she quickly glanced around and spotted some big broken branches, "Hamon, Let’s get rid of some of the men on the horses, we can’t go running on our feet, they will surely come after us." She suggested as she took one of the broken branches and handed him one, "Here, since we don’t have weapons, we have to use this."
Hamon took it as a flare glowed in his crimson eyes, the corner of his lips pulled up, "As you say, My wife. Let’s do it the old way." With that, no more words were needed as they understood each other. Ara couldn’t help but smile a little, it’s been long since she’d fought side by side with Hamon.
They both rushed at the ground of men closest to them at the same time. Hamon was ruthlessly efficient targeting the men’s vital points to quickly dispatch them, he pierced the stick’s edge straight into one of the men’s neck ripping his head off in no time, while Ara fought with the stick as well as the dagger she’d taken from Astral’s pouch slashing their throat with it.
Together they took down six men, however Hamon’s eyes blazed with such bloodlust that the remaining assassins were forced to slow down their approach feeling the overwhelming and deadly aura the crown Prince was exuding, His eyes alone that shone in the dark was enough to make them stop in their tracks. They all hesitated to approach.
Suddenly sounds of more hooves began to ring in the air, galloping sounds were heard shuffling through the detritus, which meant that more assassins were coming their way.
Hamon’s eyebrows snapped together, ’Bloody cows!’ He then glanced at his wife, "Ara!" He gave her the signal, and she knew what to do without any further communication. She hurriedly took one of the dead men’s horse and mounted it just as Hamon did as well.
The two horses leapt forward and galloped on. A single horse would have been slowed down carrying two people at the same time. Nevertheless, despite their new advantage, the new pursuers seemed different from the ones before, and their uniforms were embroidered with a lion on their shoulders, they wore black masks on their faces. It was strangely more ominous, Hamon couldn’t put it into words, but he knew that these new assassins weren’t to be reckoned with, they were far more skilled than the ones before.
His expression turned grim as he said to Ara, "Wife, we need to go separate ways, I’ll distract them while you take the opposite path on the right."
Ara frowned, "What? I don’t understand."
"I mean if we move together, they will gain up on us, we need to split them up and meet up again at the other path."
Ara didn’t like this plan one bit, she knew so well what Hamon was trying to do again. He was planning to bring her to safety. As the situation became more dire, she realized that Hamon was only trying to protect her and not himself,
"If you tell me to split up with you again, I’ll get very mad at you. And I won’t allow you hold me to sleep tonight!" She said with displeasure laced in her voice, "Hamon, I’ll be dead before I leave your side, I am your wife and once your soldier, I am not a coward. I am staying by your side!"
Hamon’s expression turned grave, but a faint smile played on his lips, "How sweet, I’d have loved to hear such words somewhere other than this situation we are in, wife."
Ara’s lips pulled up, "I’ll keep that in mind." She said, then added teasingly, "If there is someone who needs more protection, it should be the crown Prince; you can escape while I distract them."
He smirked, "My ears are blocked, I didn’t hear what you just said, wife."
The pair smiled at each other, even in the face of death, they looked at each other dearly and made jokes. Each one cared for the other more than anyone else.
As the couple were riding each on different horses in full speed, however suddenly a stiff rope appeared between two large trees, before they could pull their horse reins it was too late, there was no time to avoid it. The horses collided with the rope and went tumbling down the side hill.
Hamon managed to find his balance as he fell off, but Ara couldn’t avoid a hard crash into the ground, her back hit a rock hard enough to make her cry out, "Ugh!" Pain shot through her back, it was like her spine was being ripped apart from the burning pain, the ring box in her pocket fell off without her knowledge. Before Hamon could rush to help her up, several more men with an embroidered lion on their uniforms appeared in a swarm into the scene as if they had been waiting for them.
Hamon’s deadly gaze shot at them, his voice calm but terrifyingly spine chilling as he asked, "Who the hell are you?" He couldn’t identify them as their faces were all masked, but one of them spoke with his voice muffled, he seemed to be the leader of the assassins,
"Who are we? Ha, You should care about your life, Your Highness. Your life is in our hands now, it will be useless knowing who we are when you’re going to die tonight." He sneered, "You’ve come this far enough, it’s time my team takes over from this child’s play."
"Who sent you?" Ara asked as she pushed herself up from the ground even with her burning back. The man sized her up, he ignored her question as he looked back at Hamon, who stared him down with his piercing red eyes, "You set your trap here for us, right?"
"Yes, not just here, even if you tried to run again; there is no escape for you, they are many more of my men blocking all the forest exits, so, why not just make it easier for yourself and us and accept defeat, Your Highness."
Hamon’s eyes darkened, there were more assassins waiting for them. He wondered who sent them. If he was alone, he wouldn’t have minded the risk of escaping or fighting, but Ara. Even though he knew she could fight on her own, he couldn’t help but still worry about her. Moreover, there was no sight of the moon. For the first time in his life, he wished his cursed side didn’t work with the moon. He could have easily lift this place and even fought them off without worrying about anything, however without the moon, it was impossible. He needed to take Ara out of here!
Hamon turned towards Ara, and he gave her a secret eye signal which she understood so much. Caught off guard, Hamon attacked two men at once, he took them down, he threw a hard bone crushing punch to ones chest, sending him flying to the other side, while he knocked the other out with a leg kick right on his neck, before the remaining assassins could register what just happened, Hamon took the two men’s sword and threw one to Ara, who swiftly caught it in the air.
And that was how the battle began, there was the sound of weapons clashing on weapons as they both fought their way fiercely. However Hamon did his best to block Ara from any attacks instead, he made sure she stood behind him while he took down most of the assassins with his sword.
The assassins couldn’t believe their eyes seeing the crown princess fought swiftly with a sword. They had underestimated her ability at first, but her sharp blade took several men down in no time. The couple slashed the enemies throat without a second thought.
As the fight was going on, one of the assassins ran to their leader who spoke to Hamon earlier, he whispered, "The crown Prince’s men are on their way here as we speak. They are coming in full force."
The leader’s brows snapped together, this was an unexpected turn of events, in the plan there was no way the crown Prince’s men would be alerted so soon, either way they would have to work through this hurdle, "Darn it! We need to get rid of them before they get here."
"But master, Her majesty has instructed to kill the wife first, but it seems the crown Prince is blocking the men from getting to his wife."
The leader thought for awhile before saying, "Then take him down first with the poisonous arrows, it doesn’t matter who we killed first. We will kill the wife afterwards and take her heart out."
"I understand!" He bowed then commanded the others, on his command, the rest of the assassins surrounded Hamon with their bows pointing to his direction. Hamon didn’t notice them as he was busy protecting Ara from the assassins, however Ara who fought behind him noticed it, she whipped her head around and saw how they’d surrounded him.
She looked between Hamon and the men, she called his name to alert him, however Hamon who was lost in the fight did not hear, he slashed their throats ruthlessly. She called again, but he didn’t seem to hear or notice the bows being pointed at him.
Ara gritted her teeth, she threw her sword at one of the men who was about to release his arrow, it struck his chest. Nevertheless, the rest of the men were still pointing at him, seeing the men were about to release their arrows, Ara made towards Hamon, her body moved instinctively before she could think, with her heart pounding in her ears as she willed her feet to move faster towards him.
