Chapter 155: Wife’s old habits (part 2)

"I should really take the throne before he dies."

"...?"

As Frederick’s health deteriorated by the day, Hamon knew he didn’t have long with his father, but before then, he wanted to do this much for him. He’d have to change in this lifetime, he would have to take the throne to prove he could become king even with the cursed blood flowing through his veins. He would face it instead of running away like a coward.

Oliver, who had no idea what Hamon was talking about, stretched his ear awkwardly before saying, "I’ll relay your message, I’ll let you know when I get any update from the knights."

Hamon rose from his seat with a small nod of his head. It was already late in the night, and if he could remember clearly his wife hated to be defeated. In their last life, she’d always get drunk after feeling defeated by the other soldiers. He had to return to her before she ended up doing just that.

Hamon made to leave the study room with a small smile, but halted as if something else came to his mind, he turned to Oliver,

"I ordered Merek to come back, but it seems my sister-in-law has been keeping him busy, so I need you to take over before he gets to come back."

"Oh I see..." Oliver’s face hardened as a look of displeasure flitted across his face at the mention of Merek. Hamon was aware of how much they despised each other. They never got along, but Hamon couldn’t think of anyone better to take Merek’s place for the mean time but Oliver.

Hamon continued as if he didn’t notice Oliver’s displeasure, "I want you to send a message to him, Tell him you will find the rat yourself. He can take more time at the Boxton mansion until my in laws get back to the north."

Oliver bowed despite his displeasure to take over what Merek had started, "Yes, I will send the message first thing in the morning."

Even though the two were bitter foes, they were not the types to let their personal issues interfere with their work. Hamon gauged Oliver’s blank expression before he turned on his heel and walked out of the study room to go look for his wife.

However, Hamon’s assumption wasn’t wrong. The moment he opened the door to their room, the smell of alcohol graced his nostril. He knew she must have felt defeated for losing to the hag, and now she was trying to drink it off. She still had that old habit?

He entered the room and closed the door behind him slowly, but was met with an empty room, until he felt a cool breeze blow in from the opened terrace door behind him. He turned to the direction, as the breeze gently blew away the white curtains, and there he spotted his wife sitting unladylike on the sofa with several empty bottles next to her.

’Unbelievable, haven’t I cautioned her from drinking this much before?’

In their previous life, Hamon would always be there to guard her after she’d get drunk, as she was the only woman in the army full of lustful men who were waiting for a slightest opportunity to prey on his little soldier. Moreover, he would always remind her to drink responsibly as a woman, but it seemed old habits do die hard. Even though they’d went back in time, she still had that habit with her.

With a displeased look, Hamon approached her on the terrace. And Ara turned her head when she heard his approaching footsteps, she had already drank quite much as all her face was flushed.

"What do you think you’re doing, wife? Drinking are we?" He questioned with a raised eyebrow.

"O-obviously am drinking _hic_ drinking alone since I have no one to d-drink with, but _hic_ me and myself." Her slurred words revealed how drunk she was. She’d drank even more than he’d thought.

"Why didn’t you call me when you needed someone to drink with?"

Ara flashed him a silly smile, "Well. It’s not too late to join me. Come here and let’s get drunk together, Hamon!" She waved the bottle in her hand, "Hurry up before I finish it up."

Hamon’s lips tugged up in a smirk as he approached the sofa and sat down beside her. However his smirk fell as he cast a side-long glanced at the empty bottles on the floor, his brows tugged together in displeasure, "For how long have you been drinking? You’ve drank quite much."

Ara pursed her lips, "I didn’t drink much, I was tasting each one of the drinks while I waited for you to come back, but then, before I knew it...The bottles were empty, so I got more." She handed Hamon the bottle of wine she’d been drinking from, and he accepted it without a word and downed it in one gulp as it was little remaining in it. He dropped the bottle with the rest of the empty bottles before he remarked,

"Don’t you think you’ve drank more than just tasting, wife?" He wouldn’t call all that much quantity just tasting. She’d drank too much, too much than he’d expected, but it seemed her tolerance to alcohol wasn’t too bad considering how she was still conscious after having drunk that much. Hamon felt that something else must be bothering her apart from the defeat.

Ara glanced down at the offending bottles on the floor, she pouted like an adorable kid, "I didn’t know I’ve drank this much...Don’t scold me for this. I-I know you’ve warned me not to drink before, but I...I am just angry at myself, Hamon. You must have heard the news already, the queen wiggled out of it..." Her voice died down to a whisper at the end, but Hamon heard her clearly.

Hamon didn’t say anything and only watched her, he knew she had more to say.

Ara continued, "Now I believe how cunning she is...I let you down for not defeating the hag! I was too confident that I didn’t take extra care of my plans..." She took another bottle and opened it then drank from it, "I didn’t know they’d planted another Cusida in Camilla’s room, I should have searched her room before taking any steps. And now because of me...Camilla has been executed, and we can no longer bring her to our side because...she’s dead, Hamon!"

Hamon didn’t still say anything and just sat there quietly to listen to what was burdening her mind. She was freely pouring out her frustration because of the influence of the alcohol.

"You know what? Now the hag knows about me as well. I’ve revealed my intentions to expose her, I can no longer play along her games. She defeated me already! I want to slice her throat with my sword." Ara breath a defeated sigh, she then turned her body on the sofa in way she was facing Hamon with one leg folded on the sofa.

"Hamon, I must have looked like a fool, didn’t’t I? Tell me am the biggest fool that ever existed on earth!" She exclaimed in frustration. She’d told Hamon to believe in her ability to handle the matter, and he’d trusted her and let her handled it, but now she hadn’t lived up to his expectations. She should have planned it out in a cautious way, she must seem like a fool in his eyes!

Hamon, who had been listening to her quietly finally answered in a soft voice as he raised his hand to tuck a strand of her hair behind her ear, "You are not a fool, wife. It’s not your fault that she wiggled out. What you’ve experienced with Merona today...I’ve also gone through the same thing countless times, I’ve lost to her everytime I planned to expose her."

Ara’s eyes widened at his unexpected confession.

"If you think you are a fool for being defeated by her once, what does that make me for being defeated countless times? Am a more bigger fool than you are then. So don’t blame yourself for this, Your plan was good to my ears. It was just the queen’s way of playing."

Ara shrunk on the sofa in a sad manner, she pursued her lips, "But Camilla was executed because of my stupid plan..."

"Camilla was a mole planted by the queen, even if she hasn’t been executed today, I would have killed her myself anyway. So don’t you think it was good that Merona killed her own person with her own hands? Now I won’t have her blood on my hands."

Ara nodded thoughtfully. His words somehow eased her mind. She had been tremendously burdened by the fact that she’d lost to Merona and the thought of; what if she lost to Cornell as well? Would that mean she wouldn’t be able to change her family’s future? If her memories served her right, Cornell was more cunning and evil than the queen.

She’d drank too much without even realizing because of the thoughts of what if. Her mind was a whirlwind of thoughts, and the blame she placed on herself was so heavy that she couldn’t help but drink to clear her mind. But now, with Hamon here, she felt like everything would be alright.

Ara flashed Hamon a silly smile as she puckered his firm shoulder, "You know what?" She asked.

Hamon glanced down at her slender fingers puckering his shoulder and glanced back at her face, "What?"

"You are so handsome and caring...but I sometimes dislike that about you, Humph! What to do, you are still my husband. And I’ll keep you that way."

"...?"

For the first time in Ara’s life, she felt the urge to keep Hamon to herself. She felt she’d be jealous if his affections and care turned to another woman. Maybe he was consoling her because she was his friend? But for her, he was more than that now. And it scared her that she was feeling this way, that her feelings might get in the way if she let it flow freely. She’d thought she could stop her heart from beating for him, but she was wrong.

Ara gazed at Hamon’s handsome face with her slightly blurred vision. These new temptations could make her forget her mission, but she couldn’t lie to herself. She loved this moment with him alone.
