Chapter 154: Wife’s old habits (part 1)

The soiree finally came to an end, with all the guests gone, Merona and her head adviser returned to the queen’s residence. Merona had a displeased look on her face as she walked inside her chamber.

"That stupid girl! The crown princess really has some nerves to play such silly trick with me!"

Hera spoke from behind, "I didn’t expect her to set such a trap. I think we’ve really underestimated her, but then, no matter her smartness, she would never outsmart Her majesty. It’s good that you had this backup plan."

"Damn that girl!" Despite Hera’s words, Merona still had a displeased look on as she angrily kicked an ornament out of her way. Hera knew from experience not to speak up again when the queen was in a such bad mood.

Merona strode towards the couch in her chamber and sat down. That insolent fool of a maid! If she had just played her part well, all this wouldn’t have happened, things would have turned out in her favors today!

"Camilla is a fool! Where on earth did you even get such an incompetent girl in the first place?" She asked Hera, who was the one to bring Camilla to Merona.

"Your majesty..." Hera’s voice died down as she bowed her head in apologies, but Merona didn’t even glance at her and only continued to mutter, "That low life servant would have just said the crown princess had sent her to mix the Cusida to frame me. But no, she was stupid enough to want to expose me in public, if she had just put the blame on that Arabella girl...I would have spared her life and rewarded her for it, instead she tries to give me away!" She rebuked and slammed her fist on the table.

Hera couldn’t help but swallowed dryly at the queen’s outburst. Even though anyone else in the queen’s situation would have been found guilty, however Merona had tricked the guests and denied it, and so everyone believed her and even apologized to her at the soiree.

Hera quickly chimed in, "Your majesty, you are right. If Camilla had just said that, the crown princess would have been in trouble and we wouldn’t even have to do anything, but unfortunately she chose to die, tsk."

Merona had only sent the perfumes to simply test Ara’s capability to know the crown princess she was dealing with, but Ara had went ahead to play smart on her. She even brought an identical box of perfumes to deceive her. And now, she’d made her execute one of her moles in the bastard’s residence. But she hadn’t really expected Ara to play such a trick.

However, if Camilla had just said Ara told her to do it, the situation would have fallen in Merona’s favor, and if only Ara had tried to interfere with the guards who dragged the maid away, she could have made it looked like they were working together to defame her. Moreover, the bastard’s wife wasn’t as dumb as they’ve really thought, she was smart enough to stay quiet.

Merona clicked her tongue at the thought, "We have to really deal with the crown princess before she starts to meddle with our plans..."

Ara may have believed she’d lost, but it didn’t also go the way Merona wanted either. Until now, she hadn’t taken Ara seriously because she’d thought she was dumb like any other pretty face noble daughters. What if Merona had went without preparing for the worst? The outcome would have been really bad!

"Arabella...we shouldn’t take her lightly anymore, she might ruin things for us, Hera. We have to do something before it’s too late."

Hera carefully opened her mouth to speak, "Your are right, but since it turned out she is this smart, we needn’t waste time, and think of a way to get rid of her then."

Merona’s eyebrows furrowed, "Not just her."

"Who else?"

Her eyes darkened, "There is the bastard, Hamon!" She said through clenched teeth. The crown Prince was already a hard nut to crack by himself, but now they’d have to handle the crown princess as well. If only Ara was just a pretty face who was easy to fool...

"Your majesty, I think it’s time we send the message out to him."

"Yes, it’s time we get this over with. Send the message, Tell him it’s time we join forces to get rid of the crown Prince." A crooked smile graced Merona’s lips at the thought of her ally.

In the crown Prince’s residence, Hamon sat lazily on his working desk as he listened to Oliver’s report about the soiree. His expression hardened by the time Oliver finished reporting. He stood up from his chair and made towards the huge window in his study room with his hands causally in his trouser pocket.

"I know the hag will wiggle out of it, she always does that!"

"The maid has been executed awhile ago. The queen really does move fast."

"That’s how she operates, she would leave no proof behind her tracks." Hamon muttered. He’d watched Ara plan everything, but despite the care taken in the plans, the hag was already a step ahead of them. She managed to escape, again. He wasn’t surprised by the outcome though. He’d expected such a thing to happen, but then he’d wanted Ara to know how cunning Merona was that’s why he didn’t try to stop her from handling it and gave her the full permission to carry out her plans.

If Merona had been an easy opponent, he would have trapped her in his webs and exposed her already, but she was a cunning Fox she always turns the tables around.

Hamon sighed and spoke to Oliver while still staring outside the window, "Are there any news about the bandits disguised as my knights to assassinate the commoners? Have you found any evidence that Merona sent them?"

"No, Your highness. There has been no new news of assassination on the villagers...but we are still working on the family’s who lost their loved ones. The knights are still investigating the case, we will hear from them when they find anything."

Hamon wasn’t satisfied with how slow his men were in handling these matters. There had been word spreading of him sending his knights to assassinate the commoners. And they hadn’t known who was behind it yet. Hamon’s eyebrows drew together as he asked another question,

"What about the powder found at Cussius’s party, has the result come out yet?"

Oliver swallowed hard when he heard Hamon’s displeased tone, he then replied with an awkward smile, "Well, not yet. It really was a strange powder, and it’s difficult for the experts to know exactly what it is, but the knights are working hard to find out about it. Very soon they will_"

"How incompetent are the knights becoming? They are out of the battlefield and yet they act like the war is over and they have to relax? Tell them to move faster, unless they want me to send them back to the frontlines. I want it done with in two weeks!"

"I-I will relay your message, Your Highness." He bowed. Hamon didn’t reply and just gazed out the window as if in deep thoughts. The study room fell silent, Oliver then said,

"Don’t worry, Your Highness. Once we’ve gathered all the evidence we need, the queen won’t be able to escape again. We will easily bring her down."

Hamon didn’t take his words as a consolation, and laughed darkly, "I have a lot of reasons to quickly take the throne this time. One; I need to become king to easily put the hag in her rightfully place. Two..." for his wife. He added in his mind.

"Your Highness, Haste makes waste. We need to be patient."

Hamon chuckled, "You wouldn’t say that if you were in my shoes, Oliver."

"Why do you think so?"

Hamon didn’t reply again and gazed out the window. To Oliver, he thought he was being attentive to Ara’s and Hamon’s relationship, and thinks they were love birds, but that wasn’t the case at all. Hamon hadn’t told anybody about his contract with Ara. Moreover, sharing a bed with his wife every night but he couldn’t even touch her, no one knew how much self control and torture he had to suffer all the night.

Every night he’d smell her tempting scent and hear her breathing on the same bed, but he wouldn’t be able to quench his desire to make love to his wife because of their contract. Could there be anything more torturous than that?

Hamon laughed softly to himself at the thought, he turned away from the window and returned to his desk before replying to Oliver’s earlier questions,

"Well, it’s not something you’d understand even if I tell you. It’s hard to explain, but..." Hamon paused as his mind suddenly went to his father. Frederick’s increasingly frail face flashed to his mind. He wouldn’t call him a good parent as he’d never stood up for him like a good father should.

Ever since Hamon was a young boy, and after his mother left him, whenever the rest of the royal family’s relatives would visit the palace, they would always look down on him, they called him names, a monster, the king’s bastard son, the son of a lowly maid, who doesn’t deserve the throne. They would call him a freak because of his distinct silver hair and red eyes. Even the servants loathed the sight of him, which was why Hamon had turned out resentful in the past and had taken up indifference as a defence mechanism. Regardless of how much ill treatment Hamon received, Frederick would do or say nothing to support him and only do as Merona wanted.

However, now, he couldn’t completely ignore Frederick. Even though he wouldn’t be able to stop his death...He would grant his greatest wish. Hamon resumed to speak in a subdued tone,

"I should really take the throne before he dies."
