Chapter 100: You can’t marry my son

Chapter 100: You can’t marry my son

The next day, it was finally the day Ara would meet with king Frederick. She left the Boxton mansion looking as gorgeous and as elegant as ever. She wore a green dress with her red hair tied in a messy bun. She stared out the carriage window, her green eyes trembled slightly, she was as nervous as when Hamon came to meet with her father.

As the carriage arrived at the castle, she stepped out of the vehicle and was met with servants lined up at the entrance of the king’s residence, "Welcome, My lady." Came the greeting from the servants as they bowed.

One of them stepped forward," My lady, let me lead you to where His majesty is."

It seemed the servants already knew of her meeting with the king, she gave him a nod and followed behind the man. They walked along the long hallway, but as they reached another hallway, the servants pointed to a room at the end of the corridor and turned back.

When she arrived at the massive double door the servants pointed at, the guards standing on each sides opened the door for her to step in. As she walked in, she was met with king Frederick’s cold expression. But he looked quite pale.

Ara immediately bowed her head in greeting, "Hail Your royal majesty."

He gave her a curt nod with a wave of his hand gesturing for her to stand up, "You must be the Boxton eldest daughter?" It was more statement than a question.

"Yes, your majesty."

"Mhm, I see..." He hummed, and gestured for her to sit opposite from him, "Have a seat."

She immediately sat at the seat he pointed at, "Thank you, Your majesty." There were different delicacies and drinks on the table in front of them.

Ara was keeping a straight expression but deep down she was as nervous as ever, she had no idea why the king wanted to meet her alone. As she was preoccupied with her thoughts, king Frederick spoke.

"So lady Boxton, is it true you and my son are in a relationship?" He questioned, not beating around the bush.

"Yes, Your majesty."

"I see..." He paused for a moment as if in thoughts, which only made Ara more nervous. He resumed, "And my son said you agreed to marry him, is that true?" He asked with no signs of softness in his expression or voice.

She nodded, "Yes, Your majesty. It would really be my honor if you permit the wedding and give us your blessings." She replied confidently masking her nervousness.

There was another silence in the room, before he asked again, "Is that so? With how confident you answered, I hope you’ve heard about the rumors about the crown Prince? Do you still want to be his wife even with that?"

"Yes, Your majesty." She immediately nodded confidently, but despite that, king Frederick’s expression turned even darker, his features gradually hardened. And she couldn’t help but think Hamon really looked so much like his father. Both of them had an overwhelming aura to their presence. She felt sweat run down her spine at king Frederick’s expression.

He resumed, "You are not right for my son. Your family is no match for the royal family for you to be the crown princess. I have already chosen a bride for him. The wedding will be in a month." He declared firmly without mincing words or sugar coating his words as if dismissing her and the said marriage between her and Hamon.

Ara’s green eyes widened in surprise and disappointment. That wasn’t good at all! A bride for Hamon?! She remembered what Hamon had said, he’d already told his father about his intentions to marry her and that she had nothing to worry about! But this was a big thing to worry about.

Her heart dropped at the revelation. She wondered which family daughter was going to be matched with Hamon, but what was more heart breaking was that the king doesn’t seem to like her for Hamon.

He continued, "I’ll send my words to Richard about cutting off the marriage agreement my son made. So you have nothing to worry about. Words haven’t spread about the marriage agreement." He stated as if that would make her feel any better.

Ara couldn’t help but question, "Your majesty, What made you think I am not right for the crown Prince?" She asked with her eyes staring straight at Frederick’s grayish orbs.

A smile crept up his face as he replied, "You really have no fear, lady Boxton. And I like that about you, but unfortunately, You won’t be of help to my son when it comes to the time to take the throne. You have nothing to support him with."

He wasn’t completely wrong. The king knew of his illness and was aware he’d die anytime soon. He wanted to make sure his son Hamon would be the next king, but the Boxton household had no much political power to be able to support Hamon. As for his second son, the solid backing from his mother and Dumbarton was enough to seize the throne without much of an effort not to mention if he were to marry into a powerful family to add to that. Although, the Boxton were not lacking in wealth, but he wanted a family with strong and solid political powers.

Ara understood what he was saying, and knew he was hinting for her to back out. Now she knew why Hamon called his father a cunning wolf!

But too bad she couldn’t back out just like that, "How are you so sure I can’t help him become king?" She asked with confidence brimming in her emerald colored orbs.

"Like I said, your family background is no match for the royal family, young lady. I have already made my decision and that’s final! We are done talking, You may leave." He rebuked sternly.

Ara’s mind started to run wild on how to convince him.
