Chapter 101: Rascal of a son

Chapter 101: Rascal of a son

Ara’s mind started to run wild on how to convince him. Then she suddenly remembered Hamon’s instructions. Did he know this was going to happen? Maybe she should try his idea?

She glanced at Frederick, and deliberately picked up the glass of water on the table with her left hand, she made sure to showcase her ring finger, "Well, if you don’t approve of our marriage, then I guess I’ll have to return this ring to His Highness. Too bad he gave me his blessings as his future wife when he proposed to me..." She remarked in a sad tone.

As Frederick’s eyes fell on her ring finger, his expression changed to shock, "What did you say? He gave you his blessings?" He asked Ara, who innocently nodded her head, "Yes, he did."

Frederick’s face hardened even more. That rascal of a son! How dare him give her the magical stone with his words of blessings! "What did he say? What was his words of blessings on the day he proposed?" He asked anxiously, as he stared at her waiting for her reply.

"He said; the man who marries me will be the next king of Findara. But too bad, he won’t be my husband now that you have made your decision." She remarked with a clueless expression.

Frederick’s pale face immediately brighten up at her words. The rascal of his son was really smart! Frederick had always wanted to possess the stone, but his son had never once let it out of his sight. But now he gave it to this lady while saying those words! Now he was sure his son will be the next king.

"Mhm, I see..." He said with a gentle smile, masking the huge wave of excitement he felt within.

Frederick was happy his son had made a wish, but in truth Hamon had made no such wish on the stone. As the stone only granted one wish to the person possessing it, Hamon was saving his for the future, and only said that to Ara to trick the king.

Frederick couldn’t help but think that if he refused the marriage now, and the lady married another person, then the throne would go to that person. He quickly glanced at Ara with a soft expression. His fierce expression from earlier was completely swept away,

"My dear, You don’t have to worry about returning the ring to my son. I think you are a perfect match for him. Don’t mind my earlier remarks, I will give my blessings for the marriage."

Ara was taken aback by his sudden change of words. She wondered what made him suddenly change by her words?

He continued, "You should take care of that ring. My son had never once even let me anywhere close to it. You have to care for it and never let it out of your sight."

Ara’s curiosity took the best of her, "Your majesty, do you know anything about the stone on this ring?" She asked, as she remembered what the old lady who gave her the necklace said.

_If you take care of it...It will serve you well._ the old woman had said.

"Of course, My son didn’t tell you about it?" Frederick asked Ara, who shook her head, "No..."

"Well, he must have a reason for not telling you about the stone. You should ask him, I wouldn’t want to come between lovers."

Ara was dumbfounded for a moment. What was the big deal about the stone? She recalled how the stone had shone bright on the day she remembered her lost memories from the past. She concealed her thoughts and asked,

"Can you at least tell me why the ring is so special, Your majesty?"

"I can’t tell you that either, the less people know about the stone, the better the world will be." He muttered, "having this conversation with you today, makes me feel at ease knowing my son will have a wife."

Frederick was treating her more like a daughter-in-law despite his initial disapproval, but Ara was more curious about the stone rather than flustered by his sudden change of attitude. Truly, the advice Hamon had given her was right.

_How strange for him to suddenly change._

Frederick was just as cunning and smart as she’d thought. He directed the conversation in the way he wanted, while expertly concealing his inner thoughts. As expected of a king who’d fought long political battles.

_I wonder what’s so special about the stone?_

Her curiosity was growing even more. There must be a secret about the stone. And why did that old woman give it to her? And why was the other half with Hamon?

"My child, I want to ask for a favor from you." He requested. But the sudden change of title felt awkward to her, but she replied calmly without a change in her expression.

"Go ahead, Your majesty."

"Never show or give the ring to any outsider apart from yourself and Hamon. And don’t let anybody hear of the words of blessings my son gave to you."

"But why?" She questioned.

"If that thing gets into the wrong hands, then it could ruin everything. Don’t ever let it out of your sight."

Ara stared at Frederick for a moment, after a short pause, she decided to ask him directly as the woman who gave her wasn’t here and Hamon doesn’t seem to want to tell her, "Your majesty...since you think I should care for it, can you just tell me what it is so I can be able to keep it safe...And I want to know more about the rumors of the crown Prince."

Such opportunity did not come by easily, she wanted to know everything about this mystery of the crown Prince, and it seemed the king knew about it.

"I can see you are curious, my daughter-in -law, but unfortunately, I can’t tell you more than what I’ve said, Hamon will surely tell you some day, so endure your curiosity until then." He said, "But if you are that curious about my son...I might tell you that after your marriage."
