Chapter 325: Chapter 334 The Reverse Upgrade is the Most Lethal
"You can combine multiple items? Oh man, that’s awesome!"
Chen Tingquan got excited instantly.
He had previously unlocked the Power of Water Element, which also had the ability to combine items, and although it was quite useful, he hadn’t used it much.
In theory, any two interactive items thrown on the ground could be combined, but the results were quite random.
And you could only combine two items.
For example, combining a twig and a stone resulted in a small stone hammer, which had a slightly higher attack power than the original twig, but the durability did not change.
The twig and stone each had their own durability. When the twig broke, the stone would fall to the ground and continue to combine with other items until the stone’s durability was exhausted and it broke too.
However, this kind of combination wasn’t particularly practical.
Firstly, there’s a big gap in attack power between different weapons in the game, and weapons crafted from ordinary weapons and materials often didn’t hit as hard as other standard weapons;
Secondly, the game seemed to have a special algorithm; if two incompatible weapons or items were combined, it would actually weaken the structure of the weapon.
For example, Chen Tingquan had tried combining two swords before, and it turned into an especially long sword, but the Hero would swing it just like a regular straight sword.
At that time, the sword’s swing speed and recovery became somewhat awkward, and the connection between the two swords was particularly prone to loosening and detaching, which actually disrupted the rhythm of combat and was not practical.
Chen Tingquan’s most commonly used combination was the Spear.
Since the Spear already had a long attack range, combining spears with spears, or a spear with a dagger or longsword, often resulted in the "40-meter sword" effect, allowing him to strike enemies from a great distance.
And perhaps because of the force angle, the spears were more durable after being combined and less likely to fall apart.
Chen Tingquan had always thought that if he could combine multiple items, that would be incredible!
For example, what if he combined four spears together? Wouldn’t that allow him to stab a monster from 800 meters away?
Just thinking about it was thrilling!
Chen Tingquan had initially thought that the officials had deliberately set a limit to combining only two items, but unexpectedly, after completing this ruin, he had unlocked the ability!
Now he had to try it.
Chen Tingquan left the ruin and, full of enthusiasm, headed to a nearby monster encampment, then threw down the four spears he carried.
These were what he had picked up while fighting small monsters earlier. There were Wooden Spears, Bronze Spears, Iron Spears; materials varied, but they all shared one common feature—they were all very long.
Chen Tingquan also deliberately arranged them in order, placing the sturdiest Iron Spear in the last position to hold in his hand, with the most fragile Wooden Spear at the front.
This way, even if the Wooden Spear was damaged, it would be easy to replace.
Once everything was ready, Chen Tingquan activated the Power of the Water Element, Combine!
A super-long clothesline was thus born.
Chen Tingquan was excited. He went forward and picked up the long pole, ready to go on a killing spree at the nearby monster encampment.
This thing’s range was nearly longer than that of the bows and arrows on the watchtower, keeping the enemy at the gates of the country—it was exhilarating!
However, as soon as he picked it up, Chen Tingquan felt that something might be amiss.
This Hero... why is he walking so slow?
Chen Tingquan had seen the Hero hold a spear before. The stance was very standard. But the Hero at that moment seemed to be in pain. He gripped the end of the Iron Spear with both hands, his body leaning back, trying hard to pick up the front of the spear to barely maintain balance.
And the front end of the spear was now obviously drooping in an arc and even shaking, as if it would fall apart if a breeze blew over it.
When the Hero moved, it was with great difficulty, only able to inch forward bit by bit.
"Huh? What does this mean?"
Chen Tingquan looked completely baffled. He tried pressing the attack button, launching an attack on a little monster in the distance.
What followed was quite the comical scene.
It seemed that the Hero took a deep breath, struggled to straighten the long, drooping spear, aimed the point at an approximate level in front of him, and then thrust with all his might!
After the thrust, the Hero seemed to lose all strength and could no longer maintain balance, only able to let the tip of the long spear fall to the ground to serve as a support.
The good news was, the attack actually hit its mark from afar!
But the bad news was, the hit only chopped off less than a quarter of the little monster’s health!
This was even less effective than when wielding an iron spear, because according to the game’s settings, the Hero could choose where to attack for full damage with an iron spear; whereas this extended version of a spear, due to its excessive weight, inevitably resulted in distorted movements by the Hero, leading naturally to decreased damage.
The next second, the little monster that was stabbed got angrily up, grabbing a wooden shield and a stick from nearby, and charged angrily at the Hero.
And the other little monsters were busy with their tasks, some blowing horns, some with bows and arrows, and others throwing stones.
Just as the leading little monster was almost upon him, the Hero once again barely managed to lift the limp spear from the ground, resuming the original ready stance.
During this process, Chen Tingquan was burning with impatience, even wishing he could step in and operate the Hero himself.
Finally getting into position, but when Chen Tingquan pressed the attack button, he stabbed at nothing.
Because the spear was too long!
By then, the little monster had already dashed into the range of the spear, so even though Chen Tingquan had locked onto this little monster, when the spear thrust out, it merely brushed past, utterly failing to inflict any more damage on the little monster.
Chen Tingquan wanted to run, but the Hero could only drag the long spear along the ground retreatingly, without any possibility of a quick escape.
The mob of little monsters quickly surrounded and hammered the Hero down.
Considering it was still early in the game, Chen Tingquan hadn’t collected many relics yet, and both defense and health were not high, so they couldn’t withstand many hits.
Watching the bright red "GAME OVER" on the screen, Chen Tingquan felt like he had a bellyful of complaints to vent.
"Are you crazy!
"Why get particular at a time like this!
"You’ve made it quite realistic, quite lifelike, but what’s the point of upgrading the Water Element if it turns out like this?
"Buddies, tell me, is this upgrade just an exercise in loneliness?
"The original adhesion ability wasn’t very useful to begin with, and after the upgrade, it’s turned into a complete joke!"
Chen Tingquan was furious, because the official design of the "Power of the Water Element" was completely nonsensical.
Logically, upgrading should make something stronger, but after upgrading the adhesive ability, it just increased the number of items that could be stuck together without eliminating the weight restriction on items or giving the Hero the skill to wield such a new weapon.
They even specially made a set of such clumsy movements just to annoy the players.
I’m really, I’m crying!
