Chapter 59: A Grand Dream
Chapter 59: A Grand Dream
Rukari stands up from his seat. An intense silence envelope the entire tent. Aeryon did not know much about his uncle. But he knows that he needed his uncle support.
It is better to have his support than not
He looks at Aeryon.
The wind blows from the outside, the curtain of the tent rises slightly from the ground, the whistling of the wind sways the tall grass outside, creating a sound that is familiar for the people of the Great Steppe.
People who live near the shore likes to hear the sound of the waves crashing onto the shore and people who lives in the Great Steppe like to hear the sound of the countless grass swaying,
Each has its own melody. Each one of it is calming to the heart
In the tent the moment seems to stretch out and Rukari sighed
Aeryon guessed something from his uncle reaction
"Elder Rukari, are you not convinced?" he shakes his head.
"I am not convinced"
Aeryon frowned. It was like someone had just poured a bucket of water onto all three of them
Mayeux eyes frowned and Belarion do not understand. His mind is very simple in this matter
Elder Rukari is Aeryon uncle. He should support him as they are family. Elder Rukari is a stranger to Aeryon but he is not a stranger to Belarion.
Rukari is also like his uncle.
He was the one that educated him. He taught him the names of the various tribes that lived in the countries around, and the names of the principal chieftains that ruled over them.
He also gave him such information as he possessed in respect to the countries themselves, describing the situation of the mountains, the lakes, and the rivers, and the great deserts which here and there intervened between the fertile regions.
He taught him, to ride, and trained him in all methods of fighting.
He instructed him in the use of arms, teaching him how to shoot with a bow and arrow, and how to hold and handle his sword and spear, both when on horseback and when on foot.
He taught him in the art of shooting his arrow in any direction when riding at a gallop upon his horse, behind as well as before, and to the right side as well as to the left.
Because of that, Belarion is very close to Rukari and thought of him as his teacher. But when he was appointed, Elder there is a slight bit of distance because Rukari could not be shown to show favouritism.
Not to mention that Belarion when he was in youth rarely shows his brilliance.
At that time when many of the Elders wanted to use Belarion as a war machine Rukari is one of the few elders that objected.
Belarion could see that Rukari is about to clash with the current chief and he does not want like that.
One, is his sworn brother, On the other side, someone who he treated like his own uncle and his teacher.
But Belarion could not understand that things are not that simple. Because this is about something bigger than just their blood relationship
It is the direction of the tribe and that is something that Rukari could not compromise on simply because Aeryon is his nephew.
Belarion was about to get up and say something to Rukari. Rukari notices this. The oil lamp in the tent sways a bit as the wind from the outside blows
Rukari turns to look at Belarion and before Belarion even speak, Rukari look at him with a glare and he shook his head.
Belarion frowns and he could only sigh as he sist back down on his seat.
He did not even manage to fully stand up before he sat back down.
Rukari turn back to look at Aeryon. He took a deep breath and then he began speaking
"There are hundreds of tribes in the Southern Great Steppe alone. Don’t say the Southern Great Steppe, could you get out from the encirclement of the large tribes?"
"I know you and Belarion are powerful warriors. But it’s not like in this world that there are no other great warriors. No matter how strong you are, you would die if you were confronted by tens of thousands of men"
He paused for a second
"Let’s say you manage to unify the Southern Great Steppe. The moment you manage to do that, do you think the other Warchiefs all over the other three directions of the Great Steppe would let you grow even more?"
"Yes, they are disunited. But do you know who they are united against? A threat. Even if that threat comes from the Great Steppe itself." He paused and then said, "Especially if it comes from the Great Steppe."
He sighed and he paused for a second before saying
"In the North, I heard there is a great tribe. Hundreds of thousands of men follow his orders. There are hundreds of small tribes under this tribe protection. They ravaged through the land of Roma. In the East, another tribe is slowly rising and a great battle between large tribes happens every day. Conquering the Great Steppe is not an easy thing to do"
For a moment there is silence and then Rukari continued
"I could not see a way for you to move froward." Rukari then looked at Mayeux and spoke
"I know this young child is versed in strategy and the knowledge he learns from his father might be more superior than my own thoughts. Maybe he could see something I could not. But no matter how much I think about it, I do not think that you could do this"
"At most you would be able to unify the Southern Great Steppe. There is no particular strong tribe or large tribe in the Southern Great Steppe. So, I believe you have a chance to unify the Southern Great Steppe"
"But the moment you formed a huge tribe in the South, all the fragmented tribe from all three direction would call on the Qurultai"
"And trust me, the moment, they call upon the Qurultai, they would unite with each other to cut the tribe down to size. It has happened before and it will happen again"
"This is because none of the great tribe Warchief wanted anyone to stand on the top. They want to stand on the top but they don’t want anyone to truly stand on the top. If it’s not them, they could not allow it"
Hearing this Aeryon clench his fist
"This divisiveness is what had caused the division of the Great Steppe, making us easy pickings from the large empire"
Aeryon spoke with great anger
Rukari is calm and nodded
"Whether it is a scheme of division or not, didn’t matter. It is what it is." He paused, his eyes still looking calmly at Aeryon. His eyes have a hint of admiration but it stopped at that.
The Aeryon he remembered was not like this. He smiles a bit. Yes, that is the young Aeryon. This Aeryon had grown. And now he has victory and he now have ambition.
He is very different from his father. He was reminded of the prophecy that was spoken of him when he was born
Rakarys at that time have a person who said he is versed in the study of fate and destiny. It is an old man
This old man is a relative of Rakarys from his mother side. And is one of the advisors of the Chief.
And his name is Sugujin.
This old man, by his skill in the study of the stars, of fate and fortune applied his knowledge to the child
Aeryon was born in a day of storms and thunder. When his mother delivers him, the storm stopped and the thunder disappeared.
The circumstances of his birth are peculiar.
The sky quickly become clear at that time. Rukari was there at the time and even he felt that the circumstances are very peculiar.
Rakarys call upon Sugujin to divine the meaning. Sugujin then foretold for him at once a wonderful life for Rakarys son.
He would grow up to be a great warrior.
He would conquer all his enemies, and extend his conquests so far that he would, in the end, become the ruler of all Lands.
The Lands that he would conquer would be so vast that it would take years to walk from one end to the other
Rakarys, of course, greatly pleased with these predictions, and rewarded Sugujin
But.... Rukari is not a young man.
Such words of greatness and glory is almost always offered to the fathers and mothers of young princes in those days by the soothsayers, and those who claimed to know the will of the world
Such promises were, of course, very flattering to these parents at the time, and brought those who made them into great favour.
Then, in the end, if the result verified them, they were remembered and recorded as something wonderful; if not, they were forgotten.
Rukari will not be swayed by a prediction by some old man hoping for some livestock. But however, he must agree, that Aeryon is developing well.
And if he was younger, he could believe that old man and support Aeryon for his bid
But.... the entire Great Steppe?
