Way of Overlord -
Chapter 58: Declaration!
Chapter 58: Declaration!
Civilization in the Great Steppe is non-existent. What they have is culture. And not a thriving civilization. For a civilization to grow, they need to unite first.
Someone had to bring the law and have the power to enforce the law. Only then could there be civilized discussion.
But the nature of the people around the Great Steppe and the hatred accumulated had make all of this difficult.
Who knows how it started? The Yan said it was the people of the Great Steppe that ride down from the North and raid and pillages cities and villages.
The old folklore told it was the people of Yan who came up north, came to a tribe, slaughter them and force them into slavery.
Those who did not were killed and humiliated
And so, they keep fighting and killing and the hatred accumulated. A few decades ago, a general from Yan came to the north and kill so many tribes and he created mountains of skulls on every place he goes.
He would erect such mountain of skull and then when they go back to the Yan empire, he was awarded and honoured and that give them a sense of superiority over the people of the Steppe.
But two decades after that massacre, someone from the Great Steppe ride down to the north and he slaughter the entire city and created the same scene that the general has done.
However, all they remember is their pain, their suffering.
They put it in words and change history, painting it like it was the aggression of the people of the Steppe when in fact it was them that started another cycle of death
They come to the north simply because they wanted to conquer the people of the Great Steppe.
But in their brush, the reason changed into pacifying the world for the Emperor so that their Emperor could bring civilization to them
But in their civilization, the people of the great Steppe have no future.
Only Yan people. If they are not Yan, they have different hearts.
They look at the world filled with prejudice. They focus on differences instead of similarities.
They forget that the plans of the powerful should not involve those who were innocent.
That general who went to the north to kill people of the Great Steppe, slaughtered people who have nothing to do with the raid of their city.
That general kills hundreds of thousands of men, women, old and young, babies.
And the person that then lay waste to the north of the Yan empire, that man was the survivor of that massacre.
He did the same. He went down, burn the city, killed every single man and woman, young and old and created mountains of skull neatly placed in every road leading to the Central Plains.
The people of Yan wrote about tehri suffering but they forget the suffering of the people that they abused.
And when the tables are turned toward them, they cry foul.
The Yan people hated the Yindu people who have dark skin, they hated the people of the Great Steppe who to them is uncivilized and if they met the Roma, they might hate them for a different reason
Yan people does not like any other people. It is not about the characters of the races or the civilization that they encounter that they hate.
But they hate anything that is different from them.
However, in the Great Steppe, there is a contrast
In the Great Steppe three races of people. And that is the major ones. There are also other pockets of communities that are not Ashran, Eresian or Marynku.
They could live together.
They fight yes, but it is not because of their race. And they felt not superiority against the other.
A Marynku dominated the southern and western side of the Great Steppe but the Eresian and Ashran could always live in the tribes of the Marynku. It is the same for the other two races.
Marynku is the majority and they have intermarried with Ashran and Eresian.
It is the same for the Ashran and Eresian. The people of the Steppe see the addition of new people as a boost of strength and not as weakness.
They blended their culture and they share with each other.
Even those two races who did not have the culture of sharing began to have such culture when they blended in with the people of the Steppe.
Life is harsh and ironically it is because of this harshness that they could sympathize with each other pains and suffering.
And this created the culture of sharing.
But the people of Yan only talk about interest.
Even among friends and family, all they talk is about interest. And their worldview is also reflected this
To them there is no sincerity between friends and family, there is only interest. What you can give me, what can I give you.
Everything is about interest.
In the tribes, your pain is our pain.
My pain is our pain.
Of course, they could be cruel.
But those who is regarded as a family, is protected fiercely.
It will not be strange to find stories where an entire tribe goes to war with another simply because of one member of the tribe being hurt.
And this culture has blended in with all the races that is in the Great Steppe. And this created indifference about the race of the tribe. One could find an Ashran in a tribe full of Marynku and vice versa.
Yan however is very distrustful of anything not Yan.
Any other race is harshly treated.
Then there is the matter of the suppression of religion
Most of the people in the Great Steppe have their own religion. Most tribes believe in a type of shamanism
But there are also that have other religion brought from another continent or their preachers spreading the word.
The Great Steppe accepted this and learn to live with it.
But Yan people treated people more harshly because of this
It is not weird to see an entire city get slaughtered by the Yan people.
They like to pretend themselves that they are cultured and educated, standing on a pavilion, reciting poems and lamenting about the common people
But they are more barbaric.
The death of individuals that screams under their honeyed buttered words could not be heard at all.
Aeryon right now could feel the anger and wrath of the original Aeryon bubbling up. In his mind, all of these seems to suddenly flashed by and it increases his anger.
"Marynku, not tribes! The culture of tribal structure must be torn down. I wanted the tribes to recognize the things they had in common"
"I want to unite the tribes! I want to unite the entire Southern Great Steppe!" he said this with conviction that shakes the heart of the three people.
"Then.... from the Southern Great Steppe, I would take the West. The East. The North! That is my ambition! To unite the entire Great Steppe!"
His ambition shook the heart of the men and they were so stunned that they were speechless for a few second.
Mayeux feel his heart boils and Belarion laughed. He did not know much about how hard it is to do what Aeryon just said they should do.
All he knows is that it would be quite the adventure. And he very much likes embarking in an adventure.
Rukari was solemn. The idea of his nephew shock him to his core. He is a warrior. And he did not fear to fight
But the ambition that his nephew had sound like a crazy ambition. Did he not know how large the Great Steppe is?
He had always wondered where his nephew would take the tribe. He had some estimation. From the way his nephew had acted, he thought that Aeryon wanted to create a large tribe, bringing back the Brolgadhr tribe back to its early powerful days.
Even though Rukari himself had never live during the era where their tribe is a large tribe, he heard stories and old alliances still exist showing that in the past the tribe of Brolgadhr is really is a large tribe in the Southern Great Steppe.
But he had never thought that what he think is so small compared to his nephew true intention.
Not the Southern Great Steppe.
Not the Western Great Steppe.
But the entire Great Steppe.
His nephew wanted to do a feat that has never been done before. To unite the entire Great Steppe!
If he is a young impressionable young man, his blood would be boiling and his heart would beat with excitement
But he is no longer a young man.
He is an old man now and he sees too much and knows too much.
It is hard for him to be excited for his nephew declaration.
Because he knows how hard it is.
Conquering the entire Great Steppe?
Relying on what?
Large tribe has tens of thousands of men. And what about those major tribes. Hundreds of thousands of men.
When they raise their banner all their subordinate tribes would raise their banner together. How would his nephew contend against that?
So, he was not as enthusiastic as the other two people that Aeryon had summoned.
And breaking the tribal structure? Even though Rukari is not well versed in history and methods of governance, he could deduce what Aeryon meant.
But, is that wise?
There are many questions and Rukari is pondering. The young have the luxury of not thinking too much because the future seems long.
But the old has learned many things when they are young and so they ponder more and they think more.
And Aeryon notices this.
His uncle suddenly stands up.
