Chapter 48: Ayera

Chapter 48: Ayera

Ayera has always been a curious person. Since she was a child, her father always has to keep her away from danger because of her curiosity

The more she tries to grasp about Aeryon, the more she finds that she knows nothing about this young chief.

Ayera had done many things for her father. Because he is family and because it is her duty. Just like her brothers has their duties, and she also has her duties

Utgard tribe, the one her father founded is rife with problems because they split off from the main tribe.

One day, they all wanted to return to the North and take back the name. This is her father ambition; this is her ambition and this is her tribe ambition

A small tribe in the great Steppe has no security.

To survive as a small tribe, they must either have great reputation or hide under a larger small tribe or have many alliances

Brolgadhr was a tribe that have great reputation. That is why even when they chose tor un instead of fighting, the Xewa tribe and the Ghar tribe did not eradicate them

That reputation of theirs as once a large tribe still have pull. One might think that if they have such reputation why does no one helps them

Because it is a different matter. The Brolgadhr once had an illustrious history. As such some other tribes are related to them in the past.

Grudges are not forgotten so should gratitude. But the tribes in the Great Steppe are also very practical.

The Brolgadhr understood this and the Xewa and Ghar tribes also understood this.

If the Brolgadhr send a summon for help, they will not be many who would come. After all, it is one thing to shelter them, it is another to fight for them

And gratitude unlike grudges dissipates after a few generations.

It is that complexity of human beings. They remember more when they are hit instead of when they are given a reward

However, it was precisely because of their reputation, that they were allowed to get out of the Great Steppe.

Because the Xewa tribe and the Ghar tribe knows that if they slaughtered all of the Brolgadhr tribe when they did not even fight back, they would not only have a stain in their reputation but it would also give the other tribes that once related with the Brolgadhr a cause to band together and band against them

Because while they would not send help to the Brolgadhr when they are there, once they are killed without reason, they are honour bound to avenge.

The tribes honor certain virtues but they are also practical.

Xeqani wanted more than just a small tribe as he desires to expand his tribe. Hence, he would care about his reputation.

It is the same for Ghar tribe.

And both of them does not want the other tribes to band together to fight against them.

So, instead of killing the Brolgadhr tribe that did not want to fight them, they simply tacitly agreed for them to be rid out from the Great Steppe

Of course, if Xeqani and Otuken knows that the son of the chief of the Brolgadhr tribe would return back to the great Steppe to take their heads and subjugate their tribes, they would not be very merciful like that.

It is just that no one thought that the Brolgadhr tribe could stage such comeback.

And then there are tribes that hides behind another tribe just like her tribe who hides behind the Xewa tribe.

And then there is a tribe that has many alliances with other tribes. Ayera knows one such tribe.

She knows all of this. She is well educated. She could not read but she learns from her father.

And this is not the first time she infiltrated another tribe. She had done the same thing before.

But never this openly.

Sometime, she would disguise himself as a boy. Sometimes she pretends to be disabled.

And she knows that the first step of defeating your enemy is to have information about them

But Aeryon is a hard man to figure out. And her curiosity grew the more she learns about this young chief.

Her curiosity is not sated

She has spent days here.

But the information she got about the young chief is scarce. She could not ask too much without drawing suspicions.

But still....it is too little to know the kind of person this chief of this tribe

From what she knows, Aeryon was always with his sworn brother Belarion since they were children

If there is a famous feat of him when he was young it was when he and Belarion raided the Wusun tribe

But other than that, most of his deeds were very usual for the son of a chief.

She also knows that after the battle is over, he always meets with Mayeux and with Mayeux seemingly being promoted from being a simple horse riders to Aeryon advisor, it is clear that the young chief held the talent of Mayeux highly.

Ayera also learns that Mayeux is quite a great commander of battle. But other than she did not know much about Mayeux and Aeryon/

However, she did get something out of her prying.

She found out that only about a week ago, they were going to Northshire. Ayera knows that place was once called Yanding.

But because of the many foreign tribes that lives there, the city lord changes its name to Northshire

The people of Yan called it Nurshira. The Ashran, the Marynku and the Eresian sometime also called it Nurshira.

Ayera rarely goes that far south.

But she once met a merchant from Nurshira so she knows a bit about that city.

However, what she knows was about something else. It was about the young chief order to go to Nurshira.

The young chief ordered the tribe to move and hide from the sharp edges of the Xewa and Ghar tribe.

The Xewa tribe, not wanting to make a big fuss let them go so that they could quickly occupied the region that once was the settlement of the Brolgadhr

Then in the journey to Nurshira, the young chief fell ill.

And then when he wakes up, he suddenly changes his order. He orders them to goes back to the Great Steppe.

They ride their horses and their beast of burden and when they arrive, Aeryon and fifty men attack the Utgard tribe that was guarding the area of the newly conquered area.

And then everything started to snowball from there.

Ayera notice something.

"It was only after he fell sick that he changes his direction. From Nurshira to return back to the Great Steppe"

but even if she found this to be somewhat weird and out of the ordinary, she probably could not think anything so absurd as "Aeryon died and his soul then then changed into someone else"

Even she could not think of something so absurd. But other than that, she simply does not know much about this future husband of hers.

Ayera sighed.

she rode her horse through the encampment, and her horse is going to a certain tent

The tent that she is going to is set apart from the others, distinct and revered.

It is a solitary presence from the other tents.

She guided her horse to a halt, pulling gently on the reins to bring the steed to a graceful stop.

With a practiced dismount, she landed softly on the ground, her leather boots sinking slightly into the earth.

"I hope she is here"

She ties her horse to a sturdy wooden fence nearby, she ensured the horse was secure before turning her attention to the tent.

She comes closer and the air was different from the other places in the settlements

The air was filled with a subtle fragrance, a delicate mingling of herbs that wafted on a gentle breeze.

The scent was unmistakable, herbs, plants, incenses

She approached the tent with reverence.

The tent stood before her, its fabric weathered by time and adorned with intricate symbols and patterns, hinting at the ancient knowledge that resided within its confines.

As she drew nearer, the scent of the herbs intensified, enveloping her senses with a calming aura.

The aroma was a tapestry of earthy tones, a melange of sage, lavender, and other aromatic plants known for their spiritual properties.

Gently parting the entrance flap, she stepped inside, entering a realm that seemed untouched by the chaotic world outside.

The interior of the tent was dimly lit, with soft rays of sunlight filtering through small openings, casting intricate patterns on the ground.

The space was adorned with meticulously arranged artifacts and ancient writings

There is feathers, skulls of animals and intricately woven fixtures. She had entered because the Ashana had decided to meet with her.

And as she enter, she saw the old woman. She sits on the ground; the sturdy wooden staff is beside her.

In her tribe, there is also an Ashana. But the Ashana of her tribe is young. The old one had died, and the young take her place.

’Sit, child"

Ayera sit and she look at this Ashana of the Brolgadhr. The old woman weathered face told tales of a life lived long and experienced, etched with lines that mirrored the trials and tribulations of the world.

This is Ashana Soran, the revered Ashana of the Brolgadhr

"Honoured Ashana Soran, I came here answering your summon"

The Ashana did not say anything.

Her eyes turned toward her, her gaze seemingly able to penetrate beyond the surface, as if she could see the very essence of the young girl standing before her.

And just as she look at her, Ayera look at her.

And in her eyes, it was like the Ashana is seeing something from her. Ayera never believed much about stories of spirits, of old gods and of mystical things.

She is young, she knows.

She had seen many things but she also knows there is still a lot of things in this world she never seen before

But she never met ghost and when people spoke of voices coming from the void, she only the hears the wind.

It is not that she doesn’t believe. She just don’t think it have anything to do with her. She once met her Ashana.

The old one.

To her, the old Ashana is like a crazy old woman. Huffed too many herbs, sees to many evil and hear too many stories

This Ashana is clearly not crazy. "But what could she see with those eyes?" she thought to herself but then suddenly Ashana Shoran tap the ground

The sound startles her and the Ashana spoke

" Go ride your horse to the north. You will meet him. Test him the way you have thought in your heart"

Then she waves her hand, gesturing her to come out.

For a moment, Ayera was perplexed.

She wanted to say something but the Ashana simply took her stick and pointed to the entrance.

"Go!"

And Ayera slightly miffed but unable to find the courage to rebuke such an influential woman got up in a huff and stormed out of the tent

Shoran saw the tent flaps as it falls back to its original position and there is a smile on her face

"Fate is like that. Even if you wanted to avoid it you can’t. The more you ran away from it, the more it chases you. Sometimes, the only way, is to accept it"

She coughed and then she chuckles

"Sometimes, not all destined fates are tragedy" And there is a smile on her aged face.

"Haish. I have lived so long just to become a matchmaker" And she laughed in that solitary tent

Outside, no one could hear the laugh of the Ashana, like the wind covers it.

The blue sky is vast and clouds are all over, the grass sways and the wind whistles but only a few could sense the way the wind is changing

The Ashana close her eyes and rest her mind and her eyes, a smile left on the corner of her mouth
