Way of Overlord -
Chapter 218: The People
Chapter 218: The People
Aeryon did not yet meet this Burchu person but Aeryon already had the heart of cherishing talents.
Even more so, if that talent comes from the great Steppe.
Cultivating new talents, training the next generation is also in one of the plans that Aeryon outlined in his grand plan.
"I have to held a feast" Aeryon thought to himself. He must treat this person well. And retain him in his tribe.
Aeryon depends on his force to rule his tribe. he did not forget what Durka told him. Under Heaven, using Force to dominate the world!
But that does not mean he needs to treat his men like dispensable tools.
To win the hearts of his people is also very important.
"I will talk to him tonight and impress him"
Loyalty that is retained by fear and loyalty that is retained by affection is different. Both are equally important but the nature of it is very important
Aeryon knows he has to steel his heart.
Genghis Khan did not create a Mongol army that could sweep the world by being loving. He must know when to exercise fear and when to exercise benevolence.
For the closest one around him, a bit of both could be an invincible combination
Aeryon had already decided in his heart that he would retain Burchu. Then he puts down the report for a while.
"There is now many new talents in the tribe. For this winter until spring next year, I should reorganize the tribe, introduce my reform to the military and sort out the titles" he thought to himself.
As for training his soldiers, Aeryon would send his soldiers to attack small tribes that did not want to surrender, consolidate power and centralized the power of those tribes onto him
Centralization of power, unity of command, only then could he realize his ambition.
Time is ticking.
And to him, it is ticking awfully fast
Aeryon did not forget why he started this path.
Yes, he wanted to make a name for himself. Wanted to immortalize his achievement
But the first reason why he does all of this is because he knows that when the Yan warlord fought and one of them become the princes of the north and tries to unify Yan, some of them went toward the Great Steppe and initiate the largest massacre of people of the Steppe
Aeryon could not help but feel his heart burning in anger each time he thought of it.
The Yan people always wanted to kill people of the Steppe. And they would find thousands of reasons to righteously kill people of the Great Steppe.
They hide behind the word of righteousness when they are actually butchers.
You want to kill people who raid you?
Fine. Kill them. It is justified.
But why did you have to kill children and the women?
Then enslaved them. Its fine if you conquer their lands.
But why not treat them as your own countrymen?
Why make difference between Yan and other races? If you could win their hearts, not only will there be no rebellions, they would even help you protect the conquered lands for you.
The Yan people is trapped in this ideological thinking that they are better than anyone else. Their empire could last this long because the geography around them make it stable.
Marynku could learn to live with the Ashran and the Eresian.
They took each other culture, intermix with each other and strengthen each other
But Yan took the people of the great Steppe, branded them barbarians, kept them captive as slaves and even then, if that is not enough, they oppressed the people of the Steppe even more.
The Yan people is a disgusting type of people
When disaster happens to their enemies descendant, they call it retribution of heaven
But when disaster happens to them, they said it is a test, a chance for them to overcome adversity.
What is terrible is others and what is good is ours.
It is disgusting.
Aeryon remember one of the articles he reads about a small state that was annexed by the Yan empire
This state once did many harmful and terrible things to the people of Yan. It is reasonable for them to hate those people of that state.
But after generations, this hatred for some reason did not dissipate and instead, become more intense.
It should not be like that.
After the generation had changed, is it logical to still hate? All the people that they should have hated is already buried six feet under.
The child is innocent.
Why should they suffer for the things that their fathers or grandfathers had done?
How could a new-born child, born from the womb have anything to do with what happen fifty years ago or even a hundred years ago?
Yan people likes to bully the weak, and when they are strong, they listed all kinds of things that disparage the weak.
When they are weak, they kneel and they lick the foot of their oppressor.
These are the impression of Yan people that Aeryon had.
Of course, there are outstanding people in their Empire.
But a few people could not change the general trend.
The general trend is created by people. And these people are the people that had been educated in the way of Yan.
Educated by their officials and their rulers to keep being stupid, and letting the scholar class keeping the people stupid so that they could keep maintaining their interests.
In such an era, there is no hope of overturning the general trend. Because all of them is easily manipulated.
Aeryon after reading those stories knows why that state descendant had to bear such a cross
Why?
Because what Aeryon notices when reading the articles, is that whenever something bad happens to the Empire, they began looking at other enemies
If the ruler throws a new enemy for the peasant to get distracted with, then they would forget that they themselves are being oppressed.
They oppresses others not realizing that their head is being stomp by the powerful people of their own empire.
When Aeryon thought of this he was reminded that many nations in his own time and space also uses this kind of technique.
To deflect any criticism for the regime, they would transfer hatred to other countries.
And the reasons why Aeryon studied that article it is because of that policy of treating grudges and not able to let it go, would spell a tragedy for Yan
those people of that state run toward the other nations and kingdoms and empires because they could no longer bear the oppression simply because of their race and because of a sin that they never had any memory of doing.
Hate is an understandable feeling especially when it is accompanied with tragedy events.
Every debt has its debtor, every injustice has its perpetrator.
But after a generation had passed, where is the debt now? The perpetrators is also gone. Why should the debt of the father transfer to the sons and daughters?
This is merely perpetuating an eternal hatred.
This kind of thing is not conducive to development at all.
The court should not convict innocent people.
But why then a child who had never sinned against the Empire had to bear the sins of their forefathers? Aeryon blame this on the culture of the Yan that likes to convict nine generation all at once.
This is an act of weakening your own country.
Talents might not be born in the low born people but that depends on how you use them
Population is also strength if you know how to utilize it
But the rulers saw population as an eyesore, as more mouth to feed. If you have big population you could use it to do many things.
Why does Aeryon fight so much and yet rarely executed the tribes that went against him?
Why would he adopt many lenient methods?
It is not because he is kind. It is because this is part of his grand plan
Aeryon smiles a bit when he thinks about this.
"Now, I have many slaves from the Yan empire. Some of the plans that I made with Mayeux could now be implemented"
A few days before he went to Yan, he met with Mayeux. There they formulated the objective of the war.
Aeryon did not fight war with simple thoughts like other chief. Small chief fights wars because of resources, their honors and other small things
Sometimes, the war they fought did not even have an objective and that is why some certain war suddenly become longer.
Because the objective changes each time.
There is such cases in the Steppe.
At first, it is a simple battle between two warriors. Then one of them get offended. They battle again brining a few more of their tribesmen.
Then it becomes larger. A battle, then a war. At first, simply because of honour. But then after the honour is recovered, suddenly they found out that the other tribes have many more resources.
They fight for the resources and then new objective arises
When this happens, it is chaos. Small battle could be done like this. But a battle that could sap the strength of an entire civilization must be wage carefully and must have an objective
Aeryon and Mayeux met each other that night to discuss this.
The city of Nurshira must be taken down regardless of the human cost.
Because it is the first step of breaking the image of incivility of Yan people.
Mayeux even though he did not know the future that awaited the Steppe people, he believes that yan would one day pose a threat to the Great Steppe.
Their desire to kill the Steppe people is ingrained in them by the indoctrination of their books of virtue and learning
Fortunately, enough, there was many events that conspired to make breaking the city easier.
The other objective is to get the riches of the city. But it is not gold or jewellery that is considered riches by these two men.
It is people.
