Chapter 299: We’re Shaking The Horizon
[TAMIKO]
"I’m your papa, son. I can feel what you feel. The rage that burns within, I feel it too. So, talk to me. Let me in. I promise I’ll listen. Let me be your papa, son," Zaffuto pleaded softly.
He could tell that what he was asking for seemed harder for his son, but he was sitting on the sidelines.
Zaffuto had given Tamiko enough time to sift through his shit and figure out what the fuck he wanted to do with his life. He had been patient even when shit never was promising for his son, but some things had to be paid attention to.
Some lives needed to be sorted and the first on the list was the young prince’s and the king would see to it that it was all good for his son.
"I’m fine, papa. However, I must ask you to forgive me in advance for what I am about to do in the next few days. It might not sit well with you as the king, which is why it is best that we talk as papa and son," Tamiko said and he could have sworn he saw an excited glint in his father’s eyes.
The man was not supposed to like where this was going and yet he seemed to want to know more, not because he was never going to say no to his son, but maybe because he wanted to see if he was as wicked as him, or if Tamiko was just like his Liana; not that he would mind it either way.
"What is it, son?" King Zaffuto asked in earnest.
"I... I know you want me to be recognized as the crown prince, so I won’t refuse it. The ceremony can be set, but after that, I will be going after everyone who hurt Kosta. I know that is not what is expected of a prince—
"...but they went after what is mine, and I have a feeling they think coming after Kosta is the only way. I don’t want my Erasthai being used as a pawn in a long game. He is mine. Mine to love and protect.
"Anyone who dares to hurt him will have to go through me... even if it’s you, papa," Tamiko said, adding the last bit quietly. He wished that there never came a time when he would have to choose between his father and Erasthai because he would choose his Kosta.
He would choose the Lycan who had saved him and loved him enough to find him a way home.
He would choose the love that had stood right for him regardless of what the chaos around him had been, and it was not something that Tamiko was about to negotiate about.
The fact that he was telling his father about this, was all Zaffuto needed to know that with or without his support, Tamiko would go after Kosta’s hunters, and boy did he love that.
"I won’t stand in your way, son. You do what you must, Kaito. If you need anything, just let me know. But that still doesn’t answer my question about how you’re doing. You lost weight, a lot of it, and it is upsetting to know that I don’t even understand what is going on. Is it Konstantin?
"Do you have relationship problems?" Zaffuto asked.
Tamiko chuckled softly as he looked at his father. He had never thought the king would be this kind of confused. For a moment, the son thought his father’s rambling was cute before he went back to realizing that the king wanted to know so badly.
He knew that his father had missed spending time with him and if Tamiko was being honest, he wanted to stay home and be with his father. There just had been enough chances for them with the war that was constantly coming up.
This was a battle they both knew they had to figure out at the end of the day, because regardless of what happened or even how it happened, they were always, always, going to be family.
"Instead of the kitchen, let’s go walk around Kawai, papa," Tamiko said and King Zaffuto stared at his son in confusion. He wasn’t sure if this was the best of ideas, given how the kingdom had relaxed and he had stayed hidden for a while.
Granted, the mad king was not worried for himself or even the safety of his people at this point, no. He was worried about how they would look at his son, how they would try to provide for his kid, and how they would try to make him an outcast again.
It was a possibility that the king dreaded because regardless of how much Kaito looked like his father, Zaffuto couldn’t control the desires of his people.
It was one thing to have them scared out of their minds, but it was another to have them wanting to freely interact with his son. It was a desperate attempt for the mad king and Tamiko could already see the wheels spinning in his father’s head.
"Are you sure about that?" Zaffuto asked.
"Of course. This is our chance to show the kingdom that at the end of the day, we are just normal Lycans like them. We can’t always stay hidden in there now, hmm?" Tamiko said and King Zaffuto let out a sigh.
He knew that he wouldn’t win this one with his son and frankly, he wasn’t even trying to question it. He would do whatever his son wanted to and he would make sure Tamiko got what he wanted.
"Alright, I shall come along," the king said and Tamiko smiled heartily.
Together the father and son walked out of the palace, ignoring the eyes on them seeing as this was the first time they were seen together after the month of war and chaos. They had felt the bloodbath and seen the way shit had changed.
However, seeing them out here relaxed was doing something and clearly Tamiko’s plan was working. The Lycans would stop what they were doing to occasionally stare at the duo who would smile and wave at them like they didn’t take out hundreds of thousands of people in the past month alone.
"I went to the books to read about Mother," Tamiko began.
Zaffuto listened as they walked across the kingdom. The eyes on them were curious as if they were watching the king and his son plotting, but the smiles on their faces were all that the Lycan king needed to relax.
Perhaps it was just faint hope, but what else could they do about this? They had lives to live and they had to be ready for whatever the fuck was headed their way.
"Yeah, with Sanjiro. Igor almost lost his shit about that," Zaffuto said with a light laugh, and Tamiko just smiled sheepishly. He knew what he had done to Kosta was stupid, but it had been the only way for him to figure out a few things on his own.
"Yeah, well. The library trip didn’t exactly end with my nose in books anyway," Tamiko said before he realized what he had said, when his father stared at him with a scrunched nose, silently judging him.
"I think we both agree that I didn’t need to know where your nose ended," Zaffuto said.
"Don’t ask me about your grandkids then."
That instantly shut the king up.
