Chapter 292: When The Night Was Full of Terrors [4]
[ZULA]
"What the fuck happened here?" the warriors asked Arabella as they watched the poor woman on her knees, defeated with pure terror in her eyes. She was in shock at the formality that had happened.
She had never thought that shit like this would happen and yet it all had. Arabella could hear the warriors speaking over themselves and they rushed around to look for the equine and the survivors.
She could see them about at the same time, she couldn’t see them. Perhaps that was why she slowly gathered herself and let out the words that would forever haunt everyone.
"Th... they left a... a mes... message for the king... I shall de...liver it," she spoke with shaky lips as her form almost fell again, she was scared to the core.
She was horrified about what they had witnessed and while the high guards wanted to sit her down and talk to her, they could see how bloodied she was. So, one of them offered to cleanse her with magic, so she could be presentable.
But even that was never going to be enough. There was never going to be a way out of this. The sun was setting in Kawai at midday and it was probably never going to rise again.
This was a horrible dream and hells be damned if there was even an ounce of hopeful fate after this.
"Go," the warrior said to her, while they kept looking around.
This was the kind of shit that shocked the entire Kawai to the core. The people who had been waiting for their loved ones had felt the links cut, but now it was all too much of a pain to even bear at once.
It was as if they had gotten the worst set of fate’s cards, and they didn’t even know what the fuck was supposed to be done about it.
Grief was all that was left, but grief was never going to be enough, this was the cross that could cripple them for years and end. Those were their mothers and sisters. They were hopeful earlier on, and now, they were all gone.
Steady in her steps, Arabella made her way to the king, ignoring the eyes on her as she tripped a few times, it was obvious she wasn’t okay, but soon enough, she knew that the king would be tearing through her mercilessly.
It was a thought that was not as comforting, but at the same time, it would get the screams out of Arabella’s head. Her eyes were still bloodshot from screaming and crying too much, but even then, there hadn’t been help for her.
So, she composed herself as she walked to the Lycan palace, the one place she was sure she would never probably going to come from. But hey, she had to hope, right? But was there really ever going to be worth it in the end?
’I’m a dead woman if I don’t tell him. And I’ll still end up dead if I tell him,’ Arabella, in her torn-up maidservant apron, said as she lingered in the forbidden hallways of the Lycan palace of the Kawai kingdom.
She was painfully aware that it was a crime to be lingering, but the news she had would make the king have her head if she so much as breathed the wrong word. She was sure today would be her end, but what else could she do?
What she had to say was more important than the fate of the Lycans in the kingdom.
’What if I run away?... Then again, he will suspect me and hunt me till the end of the world. What do I do, dammit,’ she said as she tugged at her hair roots, probably risking them falling on the ground.
She would definitely go bald if she kept at it for long, then again, what difference would it make if she was bald and dead? She wouldn’t even realize it anyway, right; oh, but she was tense.
’Maybe I should wait for the bells to ring, right?’ Arabella asked herself right as she heard the sound of heavy footsteps coming in her direction, snapping her out of her trance. She was risking a lot by being here, but then she didn’t have much of an option.
’Fuck,’ she grumbled as she looked for a hiding place in the hallways. There was none, but a desperate woman with everything to lose tonight, she just had to try her luck. Maybe she would be able to control her heartbeats to stop them from knowing she was here, right?
And with that, she rushed to hide behind one of the huge flower pots in the hallway. The damn hallway itself was wide enough for at least twenty full-grown Lycan warriors to walk through, if they were in a straight line.
It was too huge like a wide path, though right now, as she hid and prayed to the goddess to save her from whatever was coming her way, she was counting on the possibility that the flower pot would be her refuge.
"You have five seconds to get out of there before I blast you with the damn pot," King Zaffuto’s awfully familiar voice said. It was the voice that everyone in Kawai would rather choke on spikes than hear mentioning their existence.
His very existence was a threat to the living.
’He can’t be talking about me, right?’ Arabella shakily asked herself as she curled up to the wall even more, hoping to the goddess that she hadn’t fallen onto King Zaffuto’s radar.
She knew that this way sounded, no matter how much she tried to hide away from it. It was the craziest fate that she wouldn’t ever escape, at least not with the news she was carrying right now.
Her mind subconsciously rolled back to the way the queen had been torn apart quite literally and she let out a soft gasp of defeat.
She didn’t know what the fuck she was supposed to do, seeing as she was the sole survivor of an attack that left everyone dead, dead, and dead. It was crazy though, how the king didn’t seem so bothered when his queen was dead.
Arabella thought back to the way the wolves had portaled and she figured that perhaps it was because they had used magic to steal things from the king. Every other person didn’t want to be the one to tell him, hence the slow somber mood and the shut mind links.
This was hell for everyone, and for Arabella, it was the kind that she would never be able to get out of peacefully. At least that much she was sure of.
"Arabella... Should I come to get you or will you do it yourself? Your heartbeats are betraying you and you smell like a birthing hall. So, what would it be?" the king’s enforcer, Lord Sadako said, his tone so stiff.
It was almost like he was trying to tell maidservant Arabella, that the longer they made the King wait, the worse her punishment would be, especially given what the day was today. It was supposed to be a good day and for the life of everyone, they hoped that it ended well.
Lord Sadako was the fact that everyone knew instead of their king because he always represented the man. But right now, hearing Sadako’s stiff and stern voice here and now was like a stab in the heart for Arabella.
"I... I didn’t see anything, I swear. I didn’t hear anything or see anything... Oh gosh, I’m rambling again. I’m sorry, please forgive me..."
