Chapter 293: I Had All, And Now... None of You [1]
[ZULA]
"I... I didn’t see anything, I swear. I didn’t hear anything or see anything... Oh gosh, I’m rambling again. I’m sorry, please forgive me. I won’t ever come to these hallways if I survive this. Forgive me, Your Highness, and My lord.
"I should have just waited... Why am I still talking?" Arabella rambled on as she got out from behind the flower pot, her eyes closed and her hands clutching her apron so tight that if she wasn’t careful, she would rip the cloth into shreds. But that too, didn’t matter right now.
"Show your face, woman," King Zaffuto said and Arabella pushed herself against the wall, before carefully lifting her head, even though her eyes were still closed tightly.
If she was going to die today, she would pray to get to the moon with the goddess, but only if her soul wasn’t punished for interrupting the great king’s walk.
"I’m sorry... I swear on my life, I didn’t mean to. I’m so sorry. I won’t do this again, please spare my life," Arabella cried out softly, her voice trembling, knowing the circumstances that were waiting for her.
Everyone knew that crossing the dark King meant that life was no longer going to be livable. It would be hell, because no one had ever crossed the king’s path and lived to see the next day.
The man was dangerous in every possible way and his Lycans knew that, to the point that they acted like they didn’t have a King. That way, they would avoid being put in a position where their lives were ruined. He was the one Lycan that scared the hell out of everyone.
Maybe him minding his business all the time and leading the Lycans well, was his redeemable feature, but was that enough to paint him as a saint, when he murdered the traitors in broad daylight, in front of everyone including the kids?
"I will stay in the sun for a month if I have to, please spare my li—" Arabella rambled as he tried to convince herself that it was okay to break the news to the king like this.
She was sure she looked suspicious and that her words would never be more suspicious.
But what else was left for her to do? She was just a servant who had been blessed enough to be on the right side of history, but right now it felt like her word was slowly suffocating.
She was docked, she knew that, but perhaps she had to try and make do with what was euchre before her, right?
"Are you a parrot by any chance? Why the fuck are you talking a lot? Bring her to the spare chambers this instant. This is why I hate pesky little Lycans. They ruin my mood every day," King Zaffuto said, and Arabella felt her heart sink in her mouth.
The spare chamber was the chamber where people went, never to be seen again, or so the rumors in the Kawai kingdom said.
That chamber was one of the many reasons people stayed away from the palace, but Arabella just had to find herself at the palace and now, she would be headed to the spare chamber.
’Just my luck, hmm? What if I never see my mother again? What if everything goes awry? Oh goddess, I shouldn’t have agreed to the shift change dammit. I had a fucking free day and decided to be charitable and now my life is on the line?
’Shit,’ Arabella thought angrily to herself as she shivered like a soaked cat.
She was scared and had every right to be. However, scared as she was, what she did next was probably the craziest thing she had ever done in her whole life. Then again, desperate times sure did call for desperate measures, right?
"Your Highness, I came from the queen’s birthing hall, I was sent to bring you the news about..." Arabella choked as she swallowed thickly, scared that her next words would get her into the chamber that people never came from alive.
Then again, what else was she supposed to do this time?
If this was how she was going to die, then at least she would try saving herself, right? After all, she was just like every Lycan in the kingdom who was scared of the king, surely, she wouldn’t have decided to stumble here just because she wanted to, yeah?
"I have a messenger to do that, don’t I?" King Zaffuto asked Sadako as if it was the commonest thing in the kingdom. ,
The king was also too calm and Arabella once again wondered if there was never a link with his Liana, when everyone knew that the king lived for the woman. If this is also part of the conspiracy, this had to be the cruelest thing anyone had ever done to the king.
To never be able to hear his Erasthai seek him out and ask for help... to never know that the links were or unless the traitors made it known. To never know that his Erasthai had been hurt a few minutes ago and still be calm like everything was alright.
Then again, the king had given his Erasthai three hours in the birthing hall, and the first hour wasn’t even done. Besides, he knew that she was in safe hands. So how would he know that the worst of horrors had just happened to him, of all the people out there?
"Yes, your Grace," Sadako said and gestured to the warriors to drag Arabella to the spare chamber if they had to. But then the scared woman whose eyes were still closed, wasn’t going to let this be how her life ended, right?
"No, Your Highness... I mean yes, you have a messenger but he... He is... your Highness, please have mercy on me. I only did what needed to be done. I didn’t think it would happen like this. The baby, I—" Arabella rambled and that got the King to stop in his tracks.
Today, his queen was due to deliver their baby, their prince, their heir. If the maidservant was here, then it had to mean that his prince had been born, right? Damn, that was good news, but why the hell was she scared shitless and already begging for her life?
"My heir... Is he alright?" King Zaffuto asked, assuming that he already had a son. Well, in all fairness, the physician had said that he would have a son, given the size of Erasthai’s tummy earlier. So, it had to be a boy.
"Your Highness... My condolences," Arabella said, and in a swift motion, she was slammed against the wall, as strong hands choked the life out of her. And even then, she had stayed rigid, not daring to open her eyes.
She knew what was next, but she hoped that she would be in the afterlife with her parents too. If she was that lucky to survive, the king of Kawai.
"Say that again... word by word and carefully, because your life depends on it, Arabella," the Lycan king said, his warning so clear.
"I’m sorry... The queen is dead, the royal messenger is dead, and... And the baby... S... Someone stole the Lycan prince," Arabella said, and with that, the king broke her trachea, before twisting her neck, and leaving her lifeless body slumping on the floor.
No one made a sound.
