Chapter 285: Perhaps New Enemies Were Old Friends [1]

[ZULA]

"You’re not going west, are you?" Sadako asked once they left the kingdom even though a part of him knew what the answer would be.

They had been waiting for this day for the longest time and while they were only acting because of the threat to Liana, there was no denying that the both of them had missed the feel of war.

They had both missed what it meant to be the reason for someone’s horror. Perhaps Liana had made them soft, or maybe her control on them had made them into better versions of themselves and with worse tendencies on the battlefield.

This to that was a challenge that had a tight deadline, and one they would definitely step up their game for.

Maybe it was because of the way they had been away, or maybe it was because the faces that had started sending the threats to the Lycan queen were oblivious to the fact that the king had just gotten the best of news.

It was just too much for him and for a moment he wondered if he could tell Sadako auto the good news. But perhaps they would talk about it once the battle was over, right?

"We have to remind them what it means to mess with us. I might get a timeout from Lili, but as long as everyone knows that my queen is not to be messed with, I don’t mind sleeping in the gutters if that is what she wants of me," Zaffuto said with conviction.

He had something more to fight for this time and he was thankful Lili had told him that right as they left. He was eager to go back, to see for himself, to feel the existence of his heir or heiress.

Zaffuto didn’t care what gender the baby was, as long as it was having his blood, all was fine.

He wished for a better future for his kid and frankly, that was all the more reason for him to be out here trying to make sense of wars that would probably have Liana hounding him again.

But he didn’t mind.

He was doing this for the both of them anyway.

"You love her fiercely," Sadako pointed out the obvious, with a smile.

"She is the best version of my life, brother. She is what love means to me, what love looks like. Without her... I don’t know, brother. I can’t exist without her and I have to make sure that never happens," Zaffuto said with pride as he looked back one more time.

He wished there wasn’t a war so he would stay with her and let her be the center of his universe as usual. He wanted to serve her, to give her whatever the fuck she demanded of him.

He wanted to be at her mercy and he wanted her to be the determinant of whatever hell he did or said.

Zaffuto didn’t mind doing anything as long as it was for his Liana. Maybe that made him insane over the years, but he didn’t want to even think of what that meant. He didn’t want to jinx it at the same time, but wasn’t life the best part of everything for him?

She was his life, after all.

"Well then, let’s get this done," Sadako said as they headed for the greatest war the realm had ever seen.

It was a war between factions and the Lycans. A war that created chaos as the king hunted down everyone who had tried to target his Erasthai. He hated that people thought Liana was his weakness and they tried to hear her.

It was something that had pissed Zaffuto off and flaky, as he walked toward the battlefield, knowing damn well that half the entire realm was there, he knew he would either die today or be the monster that Liana had married.

It was that simple and with the hour before sunset as his deadline, Zaffuto knew he would have to be quicker than usual. He would have to be faster and he would have to be better than all the times he had fought and murdered people in the realm.

But he didn’t mind.

"For the people of Kawai," Zaffuto said excitedly, even though to him, the people of Kawai were probably his Erasthai. But then he reminded himself that Liana was the queen of hearts and that she cared for everyone in Kawai.

Perhaps this was really for the people of Kawai, right? Well that all was a beautiful dream that was saintly bumped by the sight of the one person they had never thought they would see anywhere, let alone on the battlefield they were about to lay waste to.

"Zula?" Sadako asked as he looked at the woman at the farthest end of the enemy fleet. For a moment he thought he was hallucinating because there was just no way. Zula Hinata was king Zaffuto’s sister.

Granted, they had not come from the sanest of family lines.

However, they hadn’t been to war with her, let alone against her, and yet as Sadako stood in shock as the wolves and the other factions rallied against them, and headed for them, Sadako couldn’t help but wonder what the fuck she was doing here.

This was not reasonable.

There was no valid explanation for this and it was unsettling, to say the least.

The woman had been on their side, or so they had assumed, but was it the both of them or was it just Sadako’s kind heart that was shooting that everyone would be kinder than they were seeing as they were the worst of the worst? Fuck.

"Yeah... she is on their side. She hates me and thinks she could win by trying to use Lili against me," Zaffuto said casually and Sadako stilled. Of all the things he could have tried to think of to explain Zula’s presence here, this was definitely not it.

The woman didn’t have reason to come after Liana, but then with the way the king was talking, it was almost as if this wasn’t surprising for him. What the fuck had happened in the few thousand years that they had been apart then?

What the fuck was even going on right now? Oh, but Sadako was confused. He couldn’t think of a valid reason as to why the sister would rally this day against her brother and yet Zaffuto didn’t even seem bothered by her presence.

Maybe it was because a part of him had always expected this.

Even then, it shouldn’t have come out this way, right?

"What? Why?" Sadako voiced loudly as if that were supposed to make it all make sense.

Perhaps it would, or maybe this right here was going to be their reminder they all needed to understand that life was not going to be as simple as they had thought it would be. Then again, what part of it was like that anyway?

"Hell, if I know, brother. One thing is certain, these warriors are not regular warriors. Their abilities have been enhanced by magic. So be careful," Zaffuto warned his brother heartily and Sadako felt a lump grow in his throat.

This wasn’t how the family was supposed to be. This was not how fucked up shit was supposed to be and as the two of them went ahead to meet the incoming army, Sadako couldn’t help but feel terrible.

Familial bonds were sacred and yet the most powerful set of siblings was already against each other.

What hope was there then for people like him?

"I can always deal with you, there is nothing left to be careful of, brother. Let’s do this," Sadako said as he and his brother rushed towards the crowd of warriors. They had been supposed to come with Lycan warriors, but Zaffuto had changed his mind.

He didn’t want anyone to come along with him in this murderous war. He only wanted to put an end to this because having so many warriors on the battlefield meant that they would stay longer while tending to the injured.

And given that Zaffuto was always the last person to leave the battlefield wherever he went with his warriors, h would never be able to make it home before sunset. It is just impossible.

But then that didn’t seem to be an issue for the king because he and his best friend were just as lethal together — even more than the entire baked faction that had rallied against them.

"For queen Liana!!" A familiar voice spoke beside the king and his brother, before the owner rushed into the battlefield, with his sword held high and his audacity obvious, given he ripped through half the frontline with just a wave of his magic.
