Chapter 283: Hit Me With Your Best Shot, Honey [9]
[ZULA]
The news of what happened the previous night spread like wildfire.
For the first time, there was a hope that the mad king would slow down the murders. And perhaps he did because months after his mating ceremony, the mad king hadn’t killed a single soul.
Many assumed he was tamed, others knew he was just staying good for his new Erasthai. People wondered who the woman was and how she had managed the most impossible task in all of history.
It was a timeline that no one could explain because, at the end of the day, the mad king was still the mad king. Despite the simple show of peace, the people of the era were still wary of the king.
None of them were certain of what this would mean for them. They knew a king would never stop the murders, but then the only people who had died at the hands of the king were those who had dared to openly defy him.
Those who had tried to go against his Erasthai.
Those who had been seen as a threat to the woman no one knew his affection for. It was crazy, how she had claimed him, how she had been there for him, but then they were all still waiting for the day when life would blow on their faces.
The day when King Zaffuto proved that he understood nothing but murder and endless murders. They were waiting, but as time went by, as years grew into decades, and centuries, there was hope.
’We can breathe,’ was the one thought that lingered after decades of zero murders from the mad king and pure happiness in Kawai. The realm had assumed that the king had been silenced by his Erasthai.
He was a man in love, a man who strangely enough, was always home before the sun went down. To many, it was a shocker, but to those who had been close enough to the king, they had seen him.
They had seen the monster that monsters feared, come home to watch the sunset beside the woman who made him smile. She made him look like a good man and slowly but surely the kingdom was beam with life.
The palace that had been known for insanity was slowly shining and glowing. The Lycans were free to roam around, as long as they were within the rules of Kawaii. It was a simple thing, a reminder that even the worst of the worst could change.
But even then, the warriors knew.
They knew that deep down, the king was the monster they knew. Many who had seen him in action knew he was a raged warrior who never stopped, but for Liana, Zaffuto had stopped.
For Liana, Zaffuto had taken a break. It was like the Lycan queen had turned her husband into a normal person, which was crazy work, given the man had always been evil and had been born evil.
Maybe he was the king of evil that had been waiting for someone to see him for who he was, and Euros Liana had seen that. Oh, she loved him so much and even better. He lived for her.
"My Lili... is it time," Zaffuto said as he looked at his Erasthai.
They had known that this day would come.
For over thirty years, they had tried to lead normal lives to see what life would be like.
For years they had endured the tranquility that came with the kind king, but then all of that was slowly getting ruined. They were seeing the chaos start to sprout, and it was something that even the mad king’s Liana knew that they would have to deal with.
It hurt for a moment because Liana had gotten used to seeing her husband smile and be happy. She had seen him as a better version of himself. She had made him a better person; someone who understood what life was.
She had transformed him into a king that the Lycans openly interact with. Liana had seen the Lycans who had feared her husband, step up to the palace, and come for dinner.
They never shied away from the palace anymore and Kawai had become the prettiest of all places. The realm had quietened, but Kawai, had bloomed. The news of the queen of hearts was something that had made the realm proud.
Many women from different factions chase to name their daughters after the kindest queen who ever lived, their queen of hearts – Liana Nakamura Hinata. Oh, they loved her, and she hadn’t once disappointed them.
Liana had made the kingdom a sanctuary where even the king had found peace, and boy was it a happy moment for them. Everyone trusted the queen. Kawai was even a tourist attraction for many over the years and they never had to worry about their safety. Because while they were still scared of Zaffuto Hinata and steered clear of him, most of the time they had faith in the queen of hearts. They knew they were safe as long as Liana was alive.
That was what had kept them sane too.
Well, perhaps the universe had taken note of that and made them happier. Then again, Liana had seen her Zaffuto be humane and yet as he swung his sword ready to sheath it, Liana knew that this had to be done.
It was easily the most difficult thing she had ever had to do in the three years she had known the man.
The choice between life and death, a choice they had tried to evade for more than three decades had finally come to a point where they couldn’t avoid it anymore. It had to be made.
"Come back to me, angel. You must not stay on the battlefield. Promise me, Shuten," Liana said as she looked at her husband, the man who ruled over the largest kingdom in the realm.
She loved him, and she wanted what was best for him. She knew he had been good for her, and for their people, and it was obvious in the way that the kids were freely ruining the Kawai, even the palace.
Queen Liana had undoubtedly breathed life into the kingdom, and frankly, she was everything to them. They thought of her as the best version of what their lives could become and they were thankful to her.
They praised her and wrote songs about her.
They wrote beautiful books about how the woman had brought peace to the kingdom.
In a world where soldiers understood nothing but war, Liana was their link to humanity. She was their reminder that all of this could be better and that life didn’t always have to be hard for them.
They had loved her, but none loved her more than Zaffuto ever did. He loved her with all that he had and didn’t have. He lived for her. He ruled for her. He existed like that because of her. Because he wanted her to be proud of him, and she was a proud Erasthai.
He made sure to be the Erasthai he had sworn to himself he would be, a man whose world revolves around Liana Hinata.
And he always came home, for her.
She was his everything and frankly, while people envied Liana for what she had turned the king into, Zaffuto envied the people who always saw the best side of his Erasthai.
He hoped they would remember what it was like to live in the time of Queen Liana, the kindest of them all — and perhaps they would because the future was starting to look bleak, and Zaffuto hated to spell out what he knew was a possibility.
After all, happiness was the one thing the fates never wanted him to have, and he was happy, because of Liana.
"It is not a war, my queen. It is just a little battle, to remind the people that I am still here and they shouldn’t try to mess with what is mine," Zaffuto said earnestly, his tone bitter at the fact that the rebels had started acting on their plans.
King Zaffuto had known that toning down his murders would have consequences for over three decades he had watched and waited. He had done whatever he needed to do to protect Kawai and his queen.
And he had been good at it, a little too good because he figured out the pal to come after that which was his.
The woman he loved with all of him. But he could tell her that. He couldn’t handle her heart shattering because of the selfish people of the realm who only wanted vengeance for what Zaffuto had done to their people.
