Chapter 282: Hit Me With Your Best Shot, Honey [8]

[ZULA]

"What if it’s you that I want?" Liana asked and the king laughed at the thought.

It was impossible for anyone to want him. Then again, he had grown up self-loathing and had gotten so comfortable with his fucked-up state that not even the Erasthai he was given would even be able to convince him otherwise.

But what if she did? What if she taught him what love was and he leaned into it? What if she was the light that would shine in his darkness and the one who would make him feel normal? What then?

Would it all be alright or was he going to try and run away again? This was a temptation, and Zaffuto needed to think. But what was there to think about? The woman had just asked the simplest of questions, yet his mind was thrumming with potential answers.

There were good answers, better answers, and even worse answers. And yet all that he settled for was the most obvious of them all. Oh, but he was a predictable man when it came to his Lili.

"I’m too tainted, Lili... ask anything eels and you’ll have it," Zaffuto said and Liana groaned like she had been expecting this.

It was tiring to be with a man who only ever thought the worst of shields, but Liana was determined to bring him what made him who he was.

She was determined to go to the depths of the worst of the worst if that’s what she needed to do to get her answers and the king on the right side of fate.

"You. I want you. All of you. I don’t care if the world thinks you’re the worst person out there. I don’t care if they think you can’t be saved. I won’t try to change you or make you conform to what I hoped for.

"All I ask is for you to come back to me. Just come home, always, please," Liana pleaded softly, knowing that there was no chance the man would reject her request. It was too costly for him and it was obvious.

She was asking him to come home, something that he had never looked forward to. He was too evil a person to the point that he never needed to be in Kawai for everything to run smoothly.

Most of the time, it was his brother who ran the kingdom, and even then, Zaffuto never cared.

All he wanted was his freedom.

He would go away for months and sometimes years about each day there would be cruel reports of what he had done and the people he had brought down. He was an enemy who hunted down rebels and rogues and goodness, Zaffuto despised rogues.

He always knew they would be rogue somewhere in the realm, for some reason. The ones he despised the most were Lycan rogues because they made him think that he was too bad a king and that he was unable to make his home a home for his people.

The rogue Lycans made the king feel weak because he was never to drag them back into kawaii and that was the one thing that the mad king despised with all of him.

So, here and now, as beautiful as Liana was, it was a tad challenging for him to just agree to her demands. What of his freedom? What of his kills? Didn’t she know that it was more fun murdering people in the night than during the day?

Was she so new to the concept of his murders that she was trying to control him? Oh, but Zaffuto had so many questions, and yet at the same time, he could see sincerity in her eyes. She was honest in her plea for him to come back home.

"But Lili—" Zaffuto tried the idea of sunset, a relay upsetting one. It was almost like letting him know that he had a curfew, when in reality he was the king who had made sure people had their own curfews.

Anyone who was out of their homes at night was always looking to get killed by the king, which most of the time was not fair but then Zaffuto was a beast. He didn’t care who he hurt or even when.

All he cared about was that he got his share of the madness he had introduced. He loved it so much that it was the greatest addiction. Funny how the tiny woman in his bed was asking him to almost let that go.

This was not going to be easy, or maybe Liana was just skiing that of him for the honeymoon season, right? After all of that, he would be back to being the big bad Lycan terrorizing the llama at all times, right?

Poor Zaffuto was caught at a crossroads this time.

"You can’t change my mind about it, Shuten. I don’t want the kingdom if I don’t get to rule it with you beside me. I don’t want to be happy if you are not happy. We both know that we meant something to each other before this damn mating ceremony;

"... so your darkness is not something that could scare me off, angel," Liana recalled and Zaffuto sighed.

It would have been easier if Liana was scared of him because then she would be thankful that he was away from the kingdom. She would be glad that he was never around to remind her of the monster she had been mated to.

If Liana had been a normal girl, she would have prayed for the death of her Erasthai so she wouldn’t have to deal with the chaos that he came with. Zaffuto Hinata was a lot of work for anyone, and that would have made shit easier.

But then Liana Hinata was not easily swayed. Her determination was out of this world and it was something the Zaffuto was slowly learning in the time they had been awake.

"Fine... I can’t convince you otherwise," Zaffuto said resolutely, hoping to the goddess that all of this would be over soon.

If she wanted him to pretend, then she would pretend.

If she wanted him to act like a saint or even the fucking angel she thought he was, then he would do just that.

After all, it wasn’t like there was ever going to be a different way out of this anyway, right? She would eventually get bored and the mad king would be back to murdering his prey like he loved.

All he had to do was be patient anyway.

"Nope," Liana said with a chuckle as she pushed herself closer to the king, closing the distance between their bodies, before they settled into comfortable silence. It was new to Zaffuto, so very new that the king stayed stiff for a moment.

"I’ll do my very best to be the person who deserves you," Zaffuto whispered earnestly, not sure what he was supposed to say to the close distance. He wanted her to be free and now this was happening. Perhaps it wasn’t all bad, right?

"You don’t have to change for me," Liana reminded and Zaffuto laughed slowly.

"You smell so addictive," Zaffuto said, making his queen giggle. She could tell that he was new to all of this and that that was the mad king’s way of saying he loved her. Perhaps there was hope for the madman after all, no?
