Chapter 281: Hit Me With Your Best Shot, Honey [7]

"You’re a good person, angel... but you must promise me this," Liana added and that got the Lycan king’s attention. He had never been a good person. He knew it by heart. Yet Lina seemed to firmly believe that he was a good person.

Of course, the first time she had said that to him, he had thought she was mocking him, that she was trying to remind him of how much of an asshole he was to the general public.

He had assumed that it was her lame attempt at making him feel worse than he always felt. However now, as he looked at her, the sincerity in her eyes calling to him, Zaffuto was tempted to believe that there was some good in him.

This woman was making him delusional and a part of him was desperate to see if that was a possibility. What was good and bad in his life? What was his definition and better or even something that could scream love and life?

Perhaps she wanted him to prove that to her, but what the fuck was the man supposed to prove when all his life he had only ever been an evil narcissistic bastard?

This was not going to be simple for him, and yet he wanted to see where it would end for him. Perhaps his Lili was onto something. Perhaps she was right to believe in him, even if it creped him the fuck out.

"Anything for you, Lili. Anything," Zaffuto said confidently and truthfully.

"You must come home to me before the sun goes down, always, unless you’re on a mission with the warriors," Linaa said and Zaffuto stared at her curiously. He had expected something else, which was weird because his mind had been blank.

However, with the words from her mouth, he couldn’t help but feel he wanted her to say something. Something that even he had no clue about. Coming back home to her? That was stupid.

He never came home.

He always stayed outside.

Besides, even if he was to come home, he wouldn’t get any sleep, so what was the point of it all then? Ah, but it was a sight for the mad king, yet somehow, he was still curious as he had been the first time he had seen her from a distance.

This was his girl.

"That’s a little too much, don’t you think?" Zaffuto asked in earnest.

He had wanted to ask for more but he wasn’t sure what more would look like. What his expectation said was so out of the world that Zaffuto himself couldn’t find it in him to voice it out.

Instead, the king’s mind had gone blank under her gaze and he was just there, for her to do whatever the fuck he wanted to with him. Maybe that was a lesson on humanity, right?

"Not really... I won’t sleep until you come home. Besides, I’ll be cooking your dinner every day," Liana said and Zaffuto’s ears perked up. This was an offer. A temptation that he couldn’t say no to.

For years he had been curious about what it felt like to taste food that didn’t come from the servants of the palace. He and Sadako had once tried to cook and the result was a burnt half of the kitchen that no one could even question them about.

After that, the Lycans silently prayed to the goddess to keep the men on the battlefield and away from the kitchens, because otherwise, there would be endless burnt palaces in the kingdom because of the man and his brother.

But was that enough for him to stare at Liana like the offer of food was the best thing he had ever heard? What if she was terrible at cooking?

Then again, he had been to her house once and she had lied about it being just coffee, and it was the kind of food that Zaffuto had scanned Nakamura’s mind to know that he had been the one in the kitchens that day.

The woman scared him.

"Cooking? For me? But the palace kit—" Zaffuto rambled like he was scared for his soul.

"Only for you. If you don’t show up before sunset, then I’ll give the food to the warriors," Liana said, knowing so well that she was treading on rough waters. It was one thing to cook food for the king and another to give it to the warriors who knew so well that it belonged to the king.

This right here was a test of the mad king’s patience and his queen was slowly women that battle. She didn’t mind whatever the fuck he wanted right now, because her stance was there for him to see, and he had to make his choice.

"You wouldn’t," Zaffuto said disbelievingly like that was supposed to stop the cogwheels from turning in her head. He should have expected anything and everything from the woman the goddess had given him, but he wanted to think that everywhere was a battlefield.

Perhaps that was why he was staring at her like he was ready to challenge him to the very ends of the world. Would it matter though?

"Wanna try me?" Liana asked in the sweetest tone she could muster.

"Marriage sucks," Zaffuto all but whined like that was the worst betrayal he had ever seen. Then again, he had been given a choice and at least he knew what the consequences would be. Surely, he wasn’t a man who was hard of hearing too, was he?

"I know, right? I spent my wedding night out in the free lands, in the cold with insects feeding on me just because I couldn’t sleep without you...

"...the goddess must hate me," Liana said exaggeratedly as she got her hand off the king’s face, making the man flinch as he had just been hurt.

"I... I’m sorry," Zaffuto said and Liana choked on air.

She had never expected this and it was obvious, even in the way that her eyes softened when the king stared at her like this was the worst possible thing he had ever done. The man was a mass murderer and yet never had she ever been in such a position.

Oh, Liana was a miracle-working woman, that was the only possible explanation here.

"What?" his queen asked in surprise.

"I didn’t mean to... I just... I don’t want to make you uncomfortable. I’m not exactly the most ideal of partners in the realm. I am not a good person and you’re so kind-hearted and you’re stuck with me... but my previous offer still stands.

"If you don’t want this union, then I’ll let you go. If it is the kingdom you want for any stress I caused you, then I will give it," Zaffuto said and Liana stared at him softly. This man had never known love and it was stinking from him.

He was just a man out in the realm of evil and evil. That was all he kept doing and all he kept reliving. He had never known what life could ever be beyond that and it didn’t help that his best friend was also a warmonger like him.

Sure, Lord Sadako at least had hints of his humanity with him, but there was never going to be a chance that stuck like what the queen was hearing now. For a moment, Liana stared at him in silence.

The Erasthai the midnight moon had given her hundreds of years ago. She had never thought the man would be this insecure and uncertain. She hadn’t thought that this was a sight that anyone would ever see from the worst king to ever live.

But here it was, a sight so new to her that her brain had frozen for a moment. She was at a loss for words, like she was worried her words would break him even more than he already was.

For her, he was a broken man, a man who needed love and didn’t know how to ask for it. A man who thought he didn’t deserve it all and that betrayal was the only possible thing he lived for.

It broke Liana’s heart and she wished that he believed that people would want him. Then again, no one in their right mind would ever wish for an Erasthai like Zaffuto. Perhaps it was a good thing Liana Hinata was not what anyone would consider normal, right?

"What if it’s you that I want?" Liana asked.
