Chapter 280: Hit Me With Your Best Shot, Honey [6]

[ZULA]

"You’re scared for me, angel. That makes me want to stay even more. I’m not leaving, not today, not tomorrow, not ever. I’m your Erasthai and if I have to protect you from yourself, then so be it," Liana said as she leaned in to kiss the king’s forehead.

The man who had not been used to affection just stilled in his bed, staring at his Erasthai, not sure of what the fuck he was supposed to do. A part of him wanted to leave and run for the hills, but she was too pure.

Too beautiful and too perfect for him. He knew she would get hurt because of him if she stayed and yet as he looked into her eyes, he didn’t see fear. He only saw affection, which was strange because no one had ever looked at him like that.

Even his mother had shown him love, even the slightest of it. And it scared Zaffuto. She had been right. He was scared for her, but more than anything, he was scared because of what love and life meant to Liana.

"But Lili... what if I’m not good enough for you? I am the monster that people don’t even want to look at. You are bound to be a target and you will hate me. I know it. I am sure of it, Lili.

"It’s just a matter of time, so why don’t we cut to the chase and let each other go?" Zaffuto asked softly, is vulnerability a shock to Liana? She did not think that there was a possibility for the king to be like this.

He was always proud and held his head high no matter what came at him. She had seen him be ballistic, and yet she just stood there, like a bored man who wasn’t scared of anything.

And yet right now, as they lay on their new bed, she could see the raw fear in his eyes for her. He didn’t want her to leave him, and she could see that. but at the same time, he wanted her to have a choice... To decide on what was best for her.

He wanted her to be selfish and leave because he would hurt her and she would get hurt because of her. Maybe it was too much of a gamble, but Zaffuto was counting on her choosing herself.

Perhaps he was hoping for the wrong things from the wrong girl, but who was to tell him that she was not like any other woman?

But even so, Zaffuto had never interacted with any other woman save for his mother and sister, both of who were way too fucked up to have a sit down with. So, what the fuck was he to say to that?

"I will never let you go, angel. Never. You’re stuck with me unless I’m dead – but even in death, I will still make sure to watch over you," Liana said as she held his gaze definitely and determinedly.

She was making him know what she wasn’t leaving, and it was the sweetest thing that anyone had ever done for King Zaffuto Hinata. This woman was warming her way into his heart and maybe he should have run, but then again, she made him feel seen.

"Y—" Zaffuto tried, but Lili stopped him.

"You can trust me, Shuten," Liana said and Zaffuto growled at her lightly, his displeasure on the middle name still evident. But as he looked into her eyes, he knew she meant it. He knew she trusted him enough and he could truly trust her.

He knew there and then that she was not going to run away from him, no matter what he did to her or against her. And at that moment, he decided to never let her go, no matter what the fates threw at them.

He would fight for her.

He would keep her safe.

And he wouldn’t hesitate to give up his life for hers.

Immortality may have been his greatest curse, but if his beautiful Liana wanted him to forsake his immortality, then Zaffuto Hinata would do it without so much as a second thought.

"You’re a menace," Zaffuto laughed lightly.

"Well, you’re stuck with me," Liana said and Zaffuto groaned as if that was supposed to make her stare at him differently. Well, he was happy and he was expressing it in the only way he knew how to.

Perhaps at the end of the day, the mad king would finally have a soul worth saving, right? His redemption suddenly didn’t seem far. But would it always be an easy path?

"Angel... Maybe it’s too early for me to ask this of you, but..." Liana began, her eyes on his never leaving. She wanted to see what his reaction would be, what this would mean to him.

Of course, she wasn’t trying to force him into making a ruthless decision, but she hoped that it would work in both.

"You can ask anything of me, Lili. Anything, and I will give it, even if you want the head of the moon goddess... I will do everything to give it to you even if it’s the last thing I do with my miserable life," Zaffuto said.

There was a distant rumble in the sky, making Zaffuto smirk.

He was the strongest creature the moon goddess had created and he was the worst of them all at the same time. But that didn’t have to be a problem for him because, at the end of the day, he knew his end was inevitable.

Zaffuto had done so much shit that his redemption was never certain, and he never wanted to be redeemed.

He knew that there would come a day when the moon goddess wanted him gone and the fact that he was given and Erasthai he loved hopelessly, was already proof that it was just a matter of time before he ceased to exist.

And even then, Zaffuto was all right with whatever situation he was thrust into...

As long as no one touched his Lili.

"The goddess is certainly not pleased with your statement, angel," Liana laughed at the rumbling sky.

"She’ll have to fall in line then because there isn’t a thing I wouldn’t do for you," Zaffuto reminded proudly, like that was a badge of honor he wouldn’t even hesitate to show off to the realm.

He was a man in love and maybe it was sickening, but for her, he truly would do anything.

"You just met me, you creep," Liana teased as if that were supposed to make all of this any easier.

Maybe that was what life was to be for them, but there was no denying that whether they had met thousands of years ago or hundreds of years ago, let alone this morning, the king had long made his choice either way.

"I loved you before I ever knew it was love, Lili. Sadako thought I had finally lost the final loose screw in my head when I told him about you, you know," Zaffuto said and Liana stared at him fondly.

She always loved when he talked about his daily life with his best friend whose relationship with him was so strong they had braided each other as brothers of a lifetime. It was a beautiful union, and Liana loved that for him.

"You’re a good person, angel... but you must promise me this..."
