Chapter 270: The Monster That Horrified Monsters [4]

[ZULA]

When they left the assembly grounds, they both portaled to the palace, only that Zaffuto didn’t reach the palace with Liana. He was nowhere to be seen when the portal closed behind her.

At first, she was scared for him, until she felt the pull in the distance, and the stench of blood filled her nose – the cruel reminder that he had left her and to do what he always did best. He had marked her and left her on the same night.

Perhaps Liana should have expected this, given the way that he was always out and about. However, she had hoped that this night would be different – surely it wasn’t too much for her to ask of him, right?

He was her Erasthai and she was well within her rights to seek him out on a night like this. They were supposed to consummate their bond and yet the barbarian was nowhere to be seen. But was that why Liana was seeking him out?

Was it purely for consummation? Was she that desperate for the king or to have heirs for him, or was this just what she was telling herself to make up for the insane line of thoughts that had been hounding her for the longest time since she knew she was his?

"Is he always like this?" Liana asked Sadako when she walked out of her chambers. The king had tasked his brother with taking care of the most important person in his life on the night that was supposed to be the most important to both of them.

It was a tad ironic how much the king cared about their bond, and how he wasn’t even here to be with her. She was all alone, and yet she was supposed to make peace with that too. What kind of life had she let herself be a part of this time?

While Sadako knew that his brother had to be out there he had tried to talk to him about the mating ceremony. He had tried to pump some sense into him, given that Sadako didn’t have the guts to say no to his brother’s request.

He pleaded to him on behalf of his new queen and yet Zaffuto had been adamant about leaving on the first night. He should have been with Liana Nakamura, who was now Liana Hinata.

He had tried to make things right for her, but Zaffuto was always going to be who he was. He was never going to change, not even for Erasthai. And it was a pity that evening as the night progressed and there was no sign that the king would be home soon.

This was just one of the times that Zaffuto left and showed up after decades for Liana. It was a truth that would haunt Liana, but what else was she supposed to do to make Zaffuto stay?

"He is a good person," Lord Sadako defended as if that was the only thing he could voice at the moment.

He knew it was a lame attempt to sanitize the mess that Zaffuto had created, but then what else was Sadako supposed to do? His brother had turned out to be a runaway on his wedding night and now he had to deal with the chaos that followed.

Honestly, there wasn’t a thing that he could say to make the woman feel better, and he was painfully aware of that too. His brother was not an easy person to deal with and Liana already knew that, but then she had dared to hope for the better.

She had dared to want to be a part of his little dream, even if it was fucked up like that. But this was what she was faced with.

So, she just stared at Lord Sadako sadly, the realization that her mating night would never be the same as the mating nights that they had always been thought of as little kids.

She was never going to be special and it was just a truth she had to embrace; because at the end of the day, life was not going to be any better for her. Or maybe she had to keep hoping? Poor Liana.

"He doesn’t scare me," Liana reminded, and Lord Sadako could have sworn that life had changed. There was just no way this was possible. This woman was tiny and she looked like she couldn’t even hold a sword properly.

She looked like life had hit her in the worst of ways and she was bound to die at the hands of a powerful being. At the moment, her new husband was more likely to be the cause of her doom.

She may have been the queen, but everyone knew that the mad maniacal king was running the kingdom even when he was away.

She needed to be scared of the man if she was to keep her sanity, but her defiance was just similar to what Sadako had seen years ago when they had gone to her home. She hadn’t changed and she had also changed at the time.

Sadako could only pray for her to the goddess because the future was not certain in Kawai but beside the king, Liana’s future was a block wall. It was definitely not promised.

It would be a pity for her life to wither away, but what else was she supposed to do when her fate had been sealed?

"Your majesty," Sadako began but Liana just laughed sadly. It was obvious what Sadako would try to talk to her about and she was painstakingly aware of what the future would be like for her.

She knew that it was not readily available for her and that by leaving her chambers, she was already risking lives. But this was something that he had to do. It was a truth she had to pursue.

Over the years, she had let the mad king do what he wanted, but only because she never had to look for him. He was always the one who came for her. And she had been patient.

Oh, she had been very patient.

But was she going to let him ditch her like he had in the past century? Was she going to let him show up when he wanted and disappear when he felt like just because he had kills to complete and people to ruin?

Was that what this was about for her?

Even the universe wouldn’t be that cruel but Liana refused to think too much about it.

She couldn’t.

"You said it yourself Sadako. He is a good person," Liana said as she cast a spell on herself, making him change from her nightgown to a red long bodycon dress.

Sadako was not sure what the fuck was happening, so her just stared at his queen, wondering what the fuck was going on here. He watched her let down her thick waist-length jet-black hair, unsure of what she was planning to do.

It was almost like he was stuck between saying something and keeping quiet. So, he just stared openly. It was the only thing he could do at the moment anyway.

"I don’t think you understand. Please go back to bed..."
