Chapter 269: The Monster That Horrified Monsters [3]

[ZULA]

"The royal mating ceremony is in three days! Come one and come all!" The warriors announced three kingdoms to anyone and everyone we had ears.

It was going to be an exciting moment for everyone because no one had imagined that the king was capable of loving, or even caring for someone. It was almost like a riddle, with the only problem being that the riddle was not easy to solve.

The man in question didn’t exactly scream safety for the people, or Kawai itself. And yet as the invitations spread across the kingdom, the Lycans were excited to be a part of this.

They wanted to see what it was like for the king, for him to be similar to them. Perhaps that was why three days later, they were assembled at the royal assembly grounds for the event that would turn the next page of their lives.

They didn’t know if they would be happier or sadder, but what they were sure of was that it would all be an experience for them. Maybe the universe was finally done playing sick games with them.

But then this was what they hadn’t been hoping for.

And it was here, wasn’t it?

"Are you sure you both want to do this? You realize you could be mated and keep each other safe without announcing it to the world?" Sadako asked worriedly. The king had enemies in the entire realm.

He was a man who was never meant to have shit to love and yet here they were doing what was so out of the ordinary. It was not expected and frankly, Sadako was right to be skeptical.

King Zaffuto wasn’t the best of people out there and anyone would know this was a sign of weakness. It was going to be easier to explore, which made no sense yet made sense at the same time.

"Where would be the fun in that? Besides, she can handle herself," Zaffuto said as he looked at his Erasthai. Part of him was tempted to heed what Sadako was voicing, but there was an urge in Zaffuto to announce to the world that he had a queen now.

The Lycan kingdom which had been without a queen for over three thousand years was finally having a queen. It was unheard of, given the fact that the man on the throne hadn’t cared for bonds.

He was always on his own, with Sadako, but only because Sadako matched his crazy. Perhaps there was always going to be more to the king than he let everyone know, right?

"Alright then, may the goddess be with you both," Sadako said as he walked them to the assembly ground that was not even filled to the brim. The Lycans were still scared of what life would mean for them.

They didn’t know what this new revelation would feel like and they were scared that the king would kill them if they showed up in attires that he didn’t like. It was an unfortunate possibility that even Liana had seen in the minds of most of the Lycans.

This was the life she was subscribing to and she held to the goddess that they would be alright.

Maybe she was just hoping for the impossible, but just like she believed the first time she had set her eyes on the king, she hoped that she would be able to let the realm know that he was capable of love too.

"You can now mark each other," Sadako said, hours into the mating ceremony, when the vows had been said, and all requirements dealt with. It was a simple ceremony and with the number of clans so little, it was easier.

However, the message was home.

The king had a mate that he marked in front of the Lycan she had come to witness the union. They watched as Liana and Zaffuto’s fangs sank into each other’s neck, and new mind links formed as the queen merged with the king to form one union with Kawai.

The intensity was a little overwhelming but it didn’t take long before they got used to it.

"May the goddess be your guide. The ceremony is over," Lord Sadako said and people rushed to get away from the newly mated Lycans. Even the elders who had taken part in the binding had long created portals back home.

They didn’t want to be there to see what would happen now that the devil had someone who wasn’t scared of him.

"I would stay and watch you both, but you could be disgusting and I don’t have the stomach for that right now. Make sure to shut your door when you consummate your bond," Sadako warned as he disappeared through the portal too, leaving Liana Zaffuto at the assembly ground.

"He’s too dramatic," Liana laughed and Zaffuto joined in as the realm slowly took in their new reality. It was an experience for them and while they knew nothing of the future, they hoped that it would be alright.

There was a mate for the mad king.

It was something that most of the realm had not of, especially for a man who never cared for mate bonds. The only person King Zaffuto ever cared for was Lord Sadako, the man who managed to bridge him with humanity and the chaos he had strived to become.

He was the king’s salvation one too many times and at the end of the many reasons the king stayed closer to his sanity. Granted, to many, the king was inhumane, but Sadako saw right through Zaffuto Hinata.

Sadako saw him for the person he was, for the man who only ever wanted to be happy. He had seen his brother for the madness that he was and finally, Sadako was never once scared of the king.

He was always there to bring him back to life and his presence meant a great deal to the king who knew nothing of love and life outside of murders.

But now, he had someone...

Liana.

"Finally, he has someone to lose," the entire realm and the fates sighed in relief after the mating ceremony between the king and the new Lycan queen, Liana Hinata. She was a beautiful woman, one who didn’t deserve the fate that was handed to her.

She didn’t deserve the worst person in the realm and frankly beneath the brevity, she was a tad scared too. It was obvious in the way that he looked at her, and everyone with eyes had seen that too.

But to the enemies of the mad king, that was of no consequence. The only thing that mattered was that the king finally had something to lose. He had someone he would fight for, someone who would remind him of what life and love were meant to be.

Maybe they were hoping for the impossible because on the night of the mating ceremony, instead of the king going with his Erasthai to bed, the mad king was in the free lands, murdering more wolves.

It was like an addiction for the mad king, a reminder that life was never going to be easy.

They had dared to hope and it all went down the drain. It was the worst possible thing that could have happened, but perhaps this was not what life was meant to be for them, right?

"Is he always like this?"
