Chapter 268: The Monster That Horrified Monsters [2]

[ZULA]

"Hold on... she is the reason you shifted your study chambers to face south," Lord Sadako said as he rushed after his brother.

He had always noticed the changes.

Part of him figured that maybe, just maybe, the king finally wanted the winds of the south to hit him when he was working in his study; the same study that he barely spent any time in because he was always out of the kingdom or making lives difficult.

He was a stubborn man, and Sadako knew that.

However, this right here was a revelation that Sadako hadn’t expected.

His brother liked the woman they had just left behind. He had a soft spot for her and while that was probably not the best thing for them, Sadako was happy that his brother was finally getting his humanity in check.

There had been instances there when Sadako had been sure the Nakamuras wouldn’t be able to breathe after they left, and yet his brother was here smiling from ear to ear despite the blatant lack of respect that the Nakamura girl had shown him.

"I don’t know what you’re talking about," Zaffuto flipped his brother off, turning to look at Sadako just fast enough for the Lycan Lord to see his brother looking at the woman they had just left at the Nakamuras.

It was not something the Lycan lord was used to. However, even the heavens knew he was more than open to interacting with that woman more if it meant seeing a side of the mad king that most of the people of Kawai had been hoping to get for so long.

Sadako had prayed that someday the Lycans would get to see too, because honestly, a part of him loved this Zaffuto. The brother who always had a war on his mind when he interacted with others.

It was a beautiful sight that Sadako would never deny, and perhaps his brother would give into it too, right?

"You didn’t deny it, Zaffuto," Sadako pointed out excitedly.

Zaffuto groaned in response.

That evening, the king was to leave Kawai for his endless missions, but he didn’t leave. Instead, he locked himself in his study chambers, ignoring his brother’s teasing outside the door.

It was the first time the palace had heard genuine laughter from the Lycan Lord and they were tempted to think that it was because of the king.

It was a desperate attempt at clutching at all the possible normalcies, even when he knew that the beasts were never going to change, not for anyone.

Sadako never wanted him to change but they all still hoped that there would be better days. Perhaps with the new interaction, the mad king would find a way to make shit easier, right?

Well maybe that was what it was meant to be, or maybe it was just a pipe dream, because there was not a formal announcement about the Lycan queen, until a hundred years later, when the king decided to make Liana’s presence and importance public.

"Lili... It’s been more than a month," Zaffuto said that evening as he walked beside his Erasthai, on the way from the forest of Kawai that stood right in the middle of the kingdom.

So many Lycans were shocked at the sight, seeing as their relationship had been the most private of them all. It was one that no one remembered even those who had seen the king the first time.

The man had taken all measures to protect his Erasthai above all else. He had erased the memories of himself and Liana from the minds of those who knew, including the Nakamuras.

Maybe it was selfish for the king to make such a decision, but Liana had known that it was the best way to get out of that shell. She knew that it was not going to be easy and that this was the only way to keep whatever they held close safe.

Sadako’s safety was never a problem because Sadako was openly a Lycan Lord. No one who loved their lives would ever try to mess with the one person who had managed to keep the Lycan king steady and emotionally rational on most occasions.

"Did I keep you waiting for long?" Liana asked in earnest. She had wanted to understand the king, even though, in the hundred years that they had been courting, Liana had only seen the king a total of seven times.

That was how many times she had interacted with the man who was always out there murdering people. He had a soft spot for her, sure, but he had made certain that she was not jeopardized.

Thankfully, Liana Nakamura was a patient woman because no one would have endured the distance when they meant the same kingdom. Seven times out of a hundred long years was pure torture for any Erasthai, and yet Liana never once complained about it.

It was almost like she knew where her palace was and a part of her was certain that her Zaffuto would always come back to her. Maybe she was too optimistic, or maybe she just didn’t care much for the bond.

After all, she was mated to the one man who ruined lives on a daily basis. He was a terrible person and Lina took that too, but she chose not to think of him like that. She couldn’t.

It was too harsh a reality for her and coupled with the hours that they spent together, she didn’t have the time. In the seven times that she had interacted with Zaffuto, they only ever interacted for half an hour or an hour at most.

That wasn’t even enough for Liana to try and reason with him and tell him to stop killing people. Perhaps that was why she respected his choice, however hard it was on her. It was the only way for her to be sure that he was doing well. But how much longer, right?

"I am not complaining," Zaffuto said earnestly as he entered his hands with hers.

He won’t hate this little show that would bring the realm to a frenzy. He could tell it wasn’t the easiest of decisions and that this would breed so many things that he didn’t need to deal with now, but he had to do it.

He had to make that choice. He couldn’t keep her hidden forever, because she was understanding of him. She made him want to be a better person. She made him feel like life was not always going to be filled with war and his wrath.

He wanted to shout to the world and let them know that she belonged to him and that she was the Lycan queen that he had been hung on for the longest time.

"I’m ready, Zaffuto," Liana said gently.

Zaffuto pulled her into a hug.

It was the most he had done with her and honestly, it made Liana feel a little better about being mated to him. All that time they had been together he had not been affectionate and while this seemed like cramps or affection, Liana was willing to take it all.

"You can choose to back out, I will understand," Zaffuto said.

"And miss the way you smell when you come to seek me out? Never. We’re in this together," Liana said and once again, Zaffuto tightened the hug. It was his only way out of this.

"Alright, I’ll make the announcement... the mating ceremony will be in three days."

"Sounds like a plan," Liana nodded in agreement.
