Chapter 267: The Monster That Horrified Monsters [1]

[ZULA]

[Still hundreds of years ago]

There had been whispers across the kingdom about a certain woman the king had decided on.

A woman for a house that wasn’t unknown to the high-borns. She was a nobody, just someone from the lower caste that the king thought he could play with. Or at least that’s what many had thought.

Anyone who knew the mad king knew that the man was never one for affection, so they knew that the woman had to have some issues with her life for the king to choose her.

They expected that she was a warrior, a bloodthirsty warrior who didn’t care for lives just like the Erasthai the fates had choices for her. They had tried to make sense of many things regarding what the criterion was for her choosing, but none of them ever understood.

It was as if this was the punishment that the fates had chosen to give to him, the king who had ruined so many lives. Maybe it was a chance to measure how the king died, given most of the war heroes had been brought down by women.

It was pathetic, truly, how everyone was desperate for anything to keep the king on a leash. They were not sure what they wanted exactly, but one thing was certain, they all pitied the unfortunate woman who had been chosen for the king.

But was she on the same page as them?

"Are you sure about this?" Nakamura asked his daughter, Liana. He knew of what the king was and he knew that she didn’t have much of a choice, but a part of him still hoped that his daughter would be courageous enough to say no to the mad king.

Honestly, Nakamura figured death was a much easier fate than being mated to Zaffuto Hinata. He couldn’t be blamed though, because the man who had come to seek his daughter was nothing close to an angel.

He was the worst of them all.

He was what the fates had discarded, and it was a horrible thing they were ending to his daughter. Perhaps there was never going to be a timeline after this, but who was to say that life was going to be easier?

"He is just a man, father. Maybe all he needs is for everyone to stop looking at him like he is a monster and all will be fine," Liana said, defending the barbaric maniac she was bound to.

Any girl in her position would have been scared because of the king, and yet there she was, head held high as the king walked into her house with his Lycan Lord, ready to take her away.

He was a good man — according to Liana — and perhaps she was being blinded by the looks of the king. Then again, the man was scarred from head to toe. He was nothing close to humanity and he looked like he didn’t even want to be here.

He looked like there were better places and things for him to deal with other than coming here for a woman he didn’t even know. Then again, it wasn’t like he could end the mate bond and what it was doing to him.

The confusion was crazy and Zaffuto Hinata hated it. He was cringing even as he looked at her, but she was determined to prove to everyone that he could be a good person.

"Come in, Zaffuto. Welcome to my parents’ house," Liana said and everyone in the room, including the Lycan Lord, knew she was done for. The mad king had never been ordered to be called by his name unless Lord Sadako was the one doing it.

It was not what the customs demanded and the queen, by nature, was not supposed to address her husband like that, even if he was just at the starting stage of what could be their lifeline in the future.

It wouldn’t matter though, right?

"Oh goddess, this girl will kill me," Nakamura sighed as he watched her daughter walk over to the king and hold his hand like she was talking to her acquaintances or friends. It was unheard of, what Liana was doing, and she was not even stressed about it.

Hell, the king was shocked at the audacity the tiny woman was showing him. He couldn’t help but be amused because a part of him was already thinking that this girl had some fantasy about taming him.

He was a beast, an untamable beast and there wasn’t a soul in the world that would ever get through to him.

"You know why we are here. The mating ceremony is tonight. Show up if you don’t want your family dead," King Zaffuto said as he turned to leave, but Liana stood in front of him, daring to hold the king’s cold gaze.

She could hear her father try to revive her mother who had probably fainted, while Lord Sadako tried to help. But even then, Liana stared adamantly at the man before her. She wasn’t scared of him.

She was not worried about her safety with him. And clearly, she didn’t care that this man had just threatened her family like it was the best thing she could do.

"Sit back down," Liana ordered and her father had a heart attack.

"I could kill you and take another mate, Liana," King Zaffuto warned but the woman didn’t seem to give a shit.

"I cooked and you must eat before you leave. We can do this the whole day, Zaffuto. You and I both know that we were mated for a reason. I may be tiny, but I am your match. Now sit, or I’ll make you," Liana said, making Lord Sadako slump to the floor.

Of all the things Lord Sadako had seen in the realm, this one was not even on the scale of crazies.

This tiny woman was not scared of his brother, which was already bad enough, and the fact that she was ordering him, made him certain that the girl was out to kill them all.

There’s just no way that she was the sanest person the goddess had seen fit for his crazy other.

"I am the king," Zaffuto said and Sadako laughed defeatedly.

"Great. Just what I needed in my miserable life," Lord Sadako laughed sadly. He was not sure what the fuck was going on, but from what he could see, they were doomed. The entire Kawai was doomed.

Hell, the realm itself was doomed if this woman was the one the goddess had chosen for his brother. There was never going to be peace and there was never going to be a chance that life was better for anyone.

They were all fucked in the worst ways possible and all because the moon goddess couldn’t find a saner person to give his brother, the one man who didn’t need an Erasthai. Just great.

"Everyone knows you’re the king. Now sit," Liana insisted and the king sighed.

"Fine. You should tend to your parents though," Zaffuto said, shocking Sadako even more. If anything, the Lycan Lord was suddenly interested in whatever the fuck was going on here.

For the first time, he had seen someone so tiny make his brother out a command. She had to be nuts, but it was the kind of nuts that Sadako was willing to see to the end, even if they would be the end of him.

He had never met a brave woman like Liana, and frankly, he thought she was stupid in her brevity. Zaffuto was not humane, and this woman right here was testing the worst of waters in the realm.

The price for this would be too high and they had to start figuring out what the fuck part of life they were supposed to be holding onto anymore. It wasn’t supposed to be this crazy, at least that much, Sadako was sure of.

But what if this right here was the kind of life they had to embrace to see what life was surely made of? Would it ever be better or did the Lycan Lord need to stop hallucinating perhaps?

"They’re fine... your Lord too," Liana said as she served them.

And so, in silence, the Nakamuras ate alongside the king, and his Lord while Liana stared at her Erasthai like this was easily going to be the best adventure of her life. Perhaps she was insane for agreeing to this, but then it wasn’t like she had an option.

Lycans only ever had one Erasthai.

Zaffuto was hers.

"Postpone the mating ceremony. I’m busy this month," Liana said once they were done and Lord Sadako felt terrible for the girl’s parents. He knew that her defiance would be their ruin, and he silently prayed for them.

"Fine. It’s not like I wanted to be mated anyway," King Zaffuto huffed as he walked out while Liana smiled triumphantly.

Sadako knew she was a match for his brother. Perhaps they would figure out a central point along the way, right? But even then, it was a little strange, how Liana had no regard for the danger that was before her.

It was something that intrigued the Lycan Lord, and while he wanted to say that the king was too shocked to put the woman in her place or even too surprised by the bond to say no to her, Sadako was smart enough to know that his brother was never that easy.

Out there Zaffuto had murdered families. He had ruined fathers, mothers, and children alike. He had not let the women go, which was why there was no valid reason for him to be that kind to her, even as he rushed after him.

"Hold on... she is the reason you shifted your study chambers to face south."

"I don’t know what you’re talking about."

"You didn’t deny it, Zaffuto."
