Chapter 202: The Shoulder To Turn To
[KAWAI]
"I am his son. He knows where he stands with me," Tamiko snickered as he defended his position with his father. It seemed so simple, so trivial, and yet at the same time, it was a truth that held so many fates hostage.
It was a reality that needed to be properly checked because otherwise, so many lives would be ruined and there wasn’t a thing that the lycan prince could ever be able to do about it by that time.
Maybe he needed to think and figure things out like his father would have, no?
"Does he? If he does, then why did he put your Erasthai’s real nature yesterday then? Why did he jump up excitedly after you murdered the ministers and took your erasthai away?
"Why was he the happiest man last evening when you merged with all your energies and proceeded to tell the Kawai people that you were his son?" Danny asked the needed questions that no one had ever gotten the answers to.
Of course, the king knew what he was doing, there was no denying that, but with Tamiko, the king was always going to be different. His actions would forever be different because his son was HIS SON.
He would never compromise the safety of the love child he had with Lisa and regardless of what chaos ensued, Tamiko was always going to be the greatest love of his father. So that would probably explain why the man wasn’t willing to let him go.
However, was it all there was?
Perhaps life would be better if Tamiko made the choice. Was it something that he needed to do though?
Oh, the questions that kept bugging Danny were not as intense and wild as the situation, and yet at the same time, they were the questions whose answers would decide the fate of the Lycan kingdom of Kawai for the longest of times.
It wasn’t even a game anymore. This was a certainty that Danny had raised yesterday when the king had whispered me away, bothered by the reactions of the Kawai Lycans.
The man who should have stayed to give an explanation to the orphaned children of the Lycan ministers had jumped away like nothing had happened when in reality lives had been changed back then. It was something Tamiko had to think about carefully.
"He isn’t that insane, Danny. He is a good man. He is better than before," Tamiko insisted.
"Is he though? Does he know that he is better than before, Tamiko?" Danny asked as he looked at his best friend.
The mad king was always happiest with Tamiko and even now, when Danny was trying to talk to Tamiko, the king was listening to them from a distance while he pretended to be on a walk with his best friend too, Lord Sadako.
He was gauging the environment which was not something that anyone could consider safe, seeing as he was determined to always be a shadow in his son’s life. That made him either the best father or the most dangerous man that ever lived.
"What is that even supposed to mean?" Tamiko questioned again.
"Your father is insecure about your presence in Kawai. He doesn’t know if you will stay for him or run away because of the situation. He doesn’t trust that you will choose him if Igor isn’t in Kawai.
"He doesn’t understand what it means to have to close and lose you at the same time, because he has already lost you. He has lived in nothingness and darkness for twenty-five years. He won’t stop, Tamiko.
"Your father won’t stop until you make him stop thinking that you can’t be home for him," Danny reminded and Tamiko honestly felt suffocated. There was a lot of truth in Danny’s words and it was curtly aligned to the situation at hand.
It was strange that his father had been the one to offer nesting blankets to Kosta last night, and while Tamiko hadn’t thought about it last evening, he couldn’t help but wrap his head around that possibility at the moment.
Maybe he needed to have a sit-down with his father even though he already had a feeling that that talk wouldn’t go well for the both of them.
The son wanted to be free from the burdens of his emotions while the father was willing to burn the nation down just so the son would have the peace he sought. It was an unhinged family dynamic, yet it was one that King Zaffuto would never let go of.
"He is not a monster, Danny," Tamiko defended again, even though a part of him was slowly understanding where Danny was coming from.
Maybe it was because he needed to believe that his humane father would be like that for his erasthai too, but at the end of the day, the decision to do anything in Kawai was dependent on what Tamiko did any day or what Tamiko felt.
Because the king was simply an overprotective father who was keeping his distance and making his presence around him so known in the worst of ways. Then again, there were things that the king himself considered acts of love, which made it all even cruel.
Given the Hanzo case, the king had murdered Hanzo senior because the old man’s grief had made his son and the Beta wolf uncomfortable. So, the king eliminated them so that his son would be happy.
With the ministers, the king hadn’t said a word because he had been waiting for them to do anything that would upset Tamiko. And when he had shifted at the time, it was a reminder that the ministers needed to know that their lives were about to change.
And change they did, in the hands of the son, and not the father, something that the mad king Zaffuto Hinata still considered a win even in the present moment.
"You more than anyone know that. Everyone in Kawai who knew him before you were taken and after your mother came into this life knows that he was never a monster. But that night took two of the most important people to him.
"He openly mourned one and watched her burn. He watched the love of his life burn with the women of Kawai because she was a simple woman who loved everyone. Your father got to mourn her the right way and maybe time had given him the chance to heal.
"Time had healed the wounds that had been linked to his queen, which was why he probably never considered that when he stepped out of that room last year. However, your case was different, brother.
"King Zaffuto never got to mourn your absence in the right way. He never even got to mourn, as the books spoke of. If anything, he was in denial, hoping that someday the fates would be kinder to him and let him have the fruit of his unconditional love for his erasthai, the queen of hearts.
"He never stopped waiting and looking for you, which is why he let you bring me along when he found you. The man may not be a monster, Tamiko, but if he loses you again, the realm will literally burn.
"You heard him last time at the breakfast table," Danny said casually.
