Chapter 168: You Don’t Know What I’d Do... For You
[KAWAI]
The walk to the breakfast table was a tad different this morning for Tamiko. He could hear the shouts outside, the calls for the king to give him up and follow the actual system put in place.
He could feel the anger that the people had over the murder of Hanzo and his son and he could tell that this wasn’t going to be easy for anyone. It was the one gamble that it seemed like the king had placed and one that they would have to struggle to figure out at the same time.
However, unlike the other days when Tamiko was supposed to despise everything his father did for him, the days when he hated being associated with the king for obvious reasons, today was different.
The young prince held his head high as he joined his father, erasthai, and uncle at the table, with Danny tagging along. He looked like he didn’t have another place to be this time, and he was actually smiling through the chaos.
It was a sight that got the king to raise a brow, because while he had been expecting his son to come back for breakfast., he was sure there would still be a frown on his little angel’s face. So, this is just not what he had imagined and it was creeping the king out.
’Did something happen to him?’ King Zaffuto asked himself as he kept his eyes on his son.
He wasn’t sure whether to be happy that he looked happy or be curious because his son was never to openly smile like that, especially not when coming to share a table with him.
The king was tempted to think that their little talk last night had done wonders, but he was smart enough to know that his son was never one to be swayed by words. Tamiko had heard everything and lived through sweet and harsh words.
If he were to believe the first person who said they meant well for him, then the young prince would have already lost his life. There was no doubt about that, not today and not ever.
"Good morning father, uncle, and my precious Kosta," Tamiko said cheerily and the table went silent. The tribe that had just been mentioned wasn’t sure if this was a trap for them or if this was the one thing they could afford right now.
So, they turned to look at Danny, hoping that the young wolf would have a better explanation for them, but Danny just shrugged. He couldn’t say shit anyway, because he did not understand what was going on in Tamiko’s mind right now.
He knew that something had changed in the young prince, but it wasn’t clear what that was because otherwise, they wouldn’t have been here at this point. Maybe they will find their answers along the way, right?
"Are you doing alright, son?" King Zaffuto asked as his son and his best friend sat at their respective places at the table. It was like nothing had happened but then something had happened.
That was because instead of sitting next to Kosta where he had always been insistent on sitting, Tamiko sat at the other end of the table, facing his father, or more precisely, his rightful seat now that his mother was gone.
It was the one seat that the king had always wanted to see his son sit at because his son deserved that seat. If Liana were here, she would have sat there and their son would have sat in the middle.
But the queen of hearts wasn’t home and they had to make do, right?
’No way,’ the king thought to himself, choking in the process as he tried to comprehend whether this was just some illusion that his son was sending his way. He had prayed for days like this, quite literally, to the moon goddess, and he had never gotten answers on that.
He had hoped for days that he would share the table with his son appearing as his son and nothing more. He had wanted to always have the apple of his eyes so close and it was confusing for him right now.
Danny, Kosta, and Lord Sadako stared in shock, while the servants in the room who had turned their heads in the opposite direction of the table, fought back the urge to turn and see for themselves what had sent the table into the sudden silence.
This was unreal, but at the same time, it was as real as anything could get.
This was their chance to see what the day held for them.
"Never been better," Tamiko said excitedly, his chirpy tone without sarcasm making the king wonder if this was a trick that his son was playing on him. If that was so then it would be the cruelest of all tricks on the king.
It would be the worst of the words seeing as the king loved his son way too much to even think of trying to hurt him. It would make sense and it would be the worst possible thing that the king had ever had to deal with.
Life was not supposed to be as cruel and King Zaffuto hoped that his son wasn’t as mean. Maybe, he was reaching for the impossible, but surely his son couldn’t be that cruel to him, right?
"Are you okay though... father?" Tamiko asked, his words coming out freely without any restraints. It is like he had made the decision and he was still raging about it. This time, there was no denying that he had done the impossible to make shit possible.
He had gone through the worst of the worst already, so there was no denying that whatever this was, they could wade through it together. The universe was not that harsh to the lot of them and regardless of what happened, they could surely figure it out along the way, no?
"What?" the king asked, his voice stuttering as he tried to level up and meet his son on that same dais.
He wasn’t sure if this was just his greatest dream coming true or just his nemesis trying to mess with him in the worst of ways, but whatever it was, it was not going to be the worst of things for him.
Perhaps he had heard him wrongly. And perhaps this was just another game for Tamiko seeing as there was a salary chain of chaos outside. It wouldn’t be fair, but it would be thrilling to both the father and the son, seeing as they both had things they were desperate to hold onto.
But would it ever make any sense along the way or was this just something that Tamiko was doing because he had realized he had that much power over his father? Was it fair though?
"Breakfast smells delicious... Father. Have some, it seems like you have a long day ahead of you and you need to be at your full strength," Tamiko praised sincerely and the king wasn’t sure how to react to that.
His son was caring for him and it was confusing as hell, but perhaps just this time, he didn’t have to think too much about it. Maybe that was why the king just started speechlessly before diving to clear the food on his plate.
