Chapter 144: Desperately Holding On To A Balloon Drifting By

[TAMIKO]

"What’s the catch?"

"There is no catch, Daniel... but there’s a chance that your mate’s body might be hijacked and some other spirit will come back instead of him. Is that a risk you want to take?"

Ever since Tamiko had left, Danny had been living a life of risks, so when he was asked whether this was one he could take, his answer should have come easy. After all, what the hell was he going to lose?

If his mate turns out to be another soul, he would just be forced to mourn again, right?

Besides, it wasn’t like that was something he had not thought of yet, yeah? However, as he looked at Tamiko, the young broken prince who was trying his very best to make up for his mistakes, Danny wasn’t sure that was a risk he wanted to take.

He had seen the way Tamiko had been in pain his entire life and he had seen how losing Galya had taken a toll on Tamiko once his anger had faded. Of course, Danny knew Tamiko would brag about not feeling any pain because Galya betrayed him, but Danny knew him.

Danny knew the young prince so damn well that he also knew that this was easily the best thing Tamiko wanted for him. But did Danny want his mate back? Did he want to live through that and deal with the risk of losing his mate again?

Danny knew that as long as they were in Grealor, as long as Tamiko was his best friend and someone he would forever care about, he would never have peace.

It was quite the irony, the fact that he was finally getting a chance to be happy but he wasn’t about to take it. It was crazy, but such was the life that the fates had set up for them.

It was pointless fighting it. So, with one last look at the unconscious Tamiko, Danny made his choice.

"No. Let him rest in peace. I can’t bring him back, not when I know I will leave him and go to war for Tamiko," Danny said in earnest and the king felt his heart break for the young boy before him.

The mad king couldn’t imagine how much strength it had taken Danny to come up to that conclusion. Frankly, King Zaffuto had once been in Danny’s shoes years and years ago.

When he had seen his dead mate on the queen’s bed, he had contemplated using dark magic to get her back. He wanted to see his Liana again, and he wanted her back so desperately.

But in the midst of it all, Zaffuto had realized that his queen would ever be happy.

The scars on her body, the memories of all the shit she had gone through, the pain of being alone in that labor room without any defenses, and the horror of having her son ripped from her without even knowing what the hell she had done.

King Zaffuto Hinata had wanted to be selfish, but he couldn’t bear the thought of his erasthai being lonely. So, he chose to carry the burden of finding their son, the burden of dealing with all that pain on his own.

He chose to be the erasthai his Liana had loved and the person Liana nurtured and brought to life. It hadn’t been the easiest of choices, but the king had made it for the both of them;

... For the love they shared, for the sanity that had been when they had lived together and for the happiness that had existed in their time.

He could have found a way but still, the dark magic always demanded that a life be given to get a life back and that wasn’t something Zaffuto wanted to do. His Liana would have hated him for taking someone’s life to get her back.

Oh, it had been a harsh reality alright, but he had lived it through.

He still missed her to this day and moment, even with his dear son in his arms, but if he had to make the decision of letting his Liana rest in peace, Zaffuto would do it, without so much as a second thought.

It was what was right for the both of them and he would never force his son to go through that again. Perhaps that was why it was so easy for him to understand the young Belova.

"You are a strong one, Daniel," King Zaffuto said, before adding, "Come with us. Join us in the battle. You can claim Grealor after we are done with it. You can make it yours and we will help you ascend to power. We can make you the alpha. All you have to do is ask."

Igor Konstantin had known the king for most of his life and he had never once seen the king like this. Having Tamiko around him was making the king humane, and it was something that the Lycans of Kawai would kill to see happen.

The king that had known had been the cruelest there ever was, and many knew that deep down, away from the smiles he put on for the sake of Tamiko, was the beast that was filled with anger and a great desire for revenge for what had happened to their queen.

They knew he was the devil that the devils ran away from. He was the kind of darkness that no one would ever be able to defeat regardless. He was a bottomless pit of rage and anger that would only end up with people being massacred and lives being ruined.

Oh, they knew their king so well and that was also what got Kosta wondering if this was just the king being nice or he was slowly changing for the sake of the son in his arms.

"Thank you for the offer, but I don’t want power. I don’t want to run a pack that ruined our lives," Danny said as he looked at Tamiko’s sleeping form. He loved Tamiko, he adored Tamiko and he would always blame himself for not protecting Tamiko enough.

That was a regret that Danny had struggled to live with for the past months, even as he assessed Grealor in every way. He despised this pack and everyone in it, and he considered Grealor the one place that brought out the worst in everyone.

Grealor had taken everything from him, even his adoptive brother and best friend. They had ruined all the hope of a better life and Gabriel wanted nothing to do with them.

"Anyway, I’ll take my leave now. Please take care of him. When he wakes up, he will need to eat peanuts," Danny said as he got up, walked over to the king, and kissed Tamiko on his forehead before he made his way away from the cabin.

"Wait... the borders—" Konstantin began, only for Danny to smile at him and walk through the borders with ease. There was only one reason that that would happen, and it definitely had to do with Tamiko trusting the broken wolf with everything.

"He’s a nice kid, however broken," King Zaffuto said as he watched the young beta disappear. This time, he didn’t have any content in his voice but pride for the kid who had endured so much.

"Yeah, he is. I finally understand why my soul trusts him."

"Me too," the king said before they went back into the house, in wait for tomorrow.
