Chapter 407: Saving sleeping beauty

Chapter 407: Saving sleeping beauty

Xiang Yu’s hand slid back the lace curtain, his body freezing in place. In his world, he had a reason to hunt his mother’s soul. The woman had tormented him greatly and sought to make him pay. His hatred for her was profound, and he planned to make her suffer for all eternity.

But why did the Imperial Lord treat his wife this way? Why not bury her with dignity and send her to the underworld? Preserved in the liquid as the day she died, she lay there, a haunting reminder. Xiang Yu felt an extreme rage that didn’t belong to him. It must have been from the lingering traces of the original Xiang Yu of this world.

Gritting his teeth, he whispered, "Don’t worry, I will make him pay for this." He closed the lace curtain and continued walking through the lab. Just then, Hex’s voice echoed in his mind, "There is something a few feet from here to your left."

Turning his head toward the place Hex mentioned, Xiang Yu walked forward and found a metal door sealed shut. He felt around the door, searching for a panel to open it. "What the hell is this?" he muttered, frustration creeping into his voice.

Hex looked at the chamber and recognized it instantly. "It’s a device used for the worst war criminals in the past. A form of mental torture both technological and psychological in nature, known as the Neuro-Siphon Process. It was designed to break down even the strongest minds, especially alphas who maintained unparalleled mental prowess and resisted subjugation."

Xiang Yu’s heart sank as he heard Hex’s words.

The process began with the subject being isolated within a cold, sterile chamber lined with bio-reactive panels. These would panels would pulse faintly in rhythm, creating an unsettling ambience, resonating empathically with the subject’s emotional state.

In the centre laid a cerebral interface, an intricate array of neural probes and cognitive enhancers that facilitate the siphoning of their mental energy. Strapped into the device, the alpha was subjected to a barrage of stimuli tailored to their deepest traumas, visions of lost battles, reminders of those they had failed, and spectral echoes of voices calling for their help.

Each memory was amplified by the machine, inducing an agonizing storm of guilt and despair. The device activated a psychic feedback loop, sending out waves of disorienting pressure that pried open the doors to their psyche.

The initial sensation akin to a throbbing headache would escalate quickly, synaptic pathways igniting painfully, leaving behind the lingering tension of raw, exposed nerve endings. It was so torturous that they wished for death.

Hearing how excruciating it was, Xiang Yu struggled to find a panel or latch to open the door. Despair was quickly consuming him. "Hex, how do I open this?" he asked, his voice laced with fear.

Hex responded, "I genuinely don’t know, at least not without a connection to Star Net."

Hex continued saying, "Maybe if we go out first and I can search." Just then, Xiang Yu’s palms pressed against the door and the lifeless metal seemed to awaken.

With a soft hum, the door opened, revealing a small room with a one-way mirror that was blacked out. Xiang Yu pressed the panel and the tint in the mirror vanished, the dim light of the Neuro-Siphon chamber flickering in a haunting rhythm, its mechanical whispers filling the space.

His heart trembled as he saw the person he was looking for. He burst through the door, his heart pounding like war drums. The air was thick with tension, but it was the sight before him that sent a chill racing down his spine.

Han Xin lay motionless in the centre of the room, his usually vibrant presence reduced to a fragile shell. Cold sweat glistened on his skin, a fine sheen catching the light as it trickled down the side of his face. His eyes were shut and appeared lifeless.

"Han Xin!" Xiang Yu shouted, his voice raw with urgency as he rushed to the neurogram console. The device was monstrous, wrought with wires protruding like thorns from a dark flower. The probes that pierced Han Xin’s temples pulsed ominously, feeding off the very essence of his mind, while the restraining straps crisscrossed his frame.

With frantic hands, Xiang Yu removed the probes and restraints in a hurry. His eyes felt sour, his chest heavy as though something was pressing hard against him. He kept yelling, "Han Xin!" his voice brittle and desperate. When he was done, Xiang Yu pulled Han Xin into his arms, begging him to wake up, but Han Xin didn’t move.

"Hex, check his vitals," Xiang Yu yelled urgently, his eyes bloodshot.

Hex replied, "Okay... his mental power is severely damaged. You need to take him to your healing capsule immediately, otherwise..."

Xiang Yu rubbed Han Xin’s cheek with his thumb, and a tear dropped onto Han Xin’s face. He wiped the tear away and asked, "Otherwise what?"

Hex was scared to say it but still replied, "He will never wake up."

Xiang Yu bit his lower lip until it bled. He wiped the tears from his face and said, "Let’s go." He picked up Han Xin, putting him on his back. Han Xin was heavy for him more especially after he was marked by him. Xiang Yu’s strength seemed to be waning, but he still managed to carry him.

Hex voiced his worry, saying, "Yu Yu, you can’t carry him like this all the way back. We need a plan."

"If you have a better plan, I am willing to take suggestions," Xiang Yu replied, his steps steady but determined as he moved out of the chamber.

Hex was silent for a moment as Xiang Yu stepped out. Just then, it said, "There is a trolley over there."

Xiang Yu carried Han Xin over to the trolley and gently placed him on it, ensuring that Han Xin’s head wouldn’t hit anything. He pushed the trolley into the elevator, and as it ascended, he asked Hex, "How are we going to get out of here?"

Hex thought for a moment before replying, "You need to find the Imperial Lord’s war gear. He has an illusion device that can make people see you how you want them to see you."
