Chapter 406: Truly a beast

He stepped quietly into the dimly lit room, the shadows deepening as he moved closer to his father. Hex’s voice echoed softly in his mind, a cautious whisper. "He’s fast asleep. He won’t hear anything apart from loud noises."

With a deep breath, Xiang Yu deactivated the invisibility setting, revealing his presence. His fingertips brushed against the backrest of the couch, where the imperial lord lay slumped, a picture of vulnerability. But beneath that exterior, a tempest brewed within Xiang Yu.

The air thickened with his murderous aura, a dark energy spilling out of him like smoke. He fought against the surge within, the demon blood coursing through his veins, urging him toward violence.

He had a singular goal, to kill the man who had brought so much pain to his lover, to tear him to shreds for what he had done to Han Xin. Each step he took propelled him closer to that dark ambition. He could easily snap the imperial lord’s neck right here, eliminate the source of Han Xin’s torment.

But the imperial lord stirred slightly, sensing the tension in the air. He mumbled in his sleep, and Hex’s frantic voice broke through Xiang Yu’s focus. "Yu Yu! Stop! He is going to wake up!"

Xiang Yu did not heed the warning. The idea of killing this man consumed him completely. His heart raced, adrenaline coursing like wildfire. The moment was ripe for the taking.

Suddenly, the imperial lord opened his eyes, bleary and half-closed. In that instant, Hex fell silent, fear wrapping around its thoughts. Xiang Yu remained unfazed, a sinister smile creeping onto his lips. The reaction he anticipated from his father was not what he got. The imperial lord’s gaze was unfocused, and as he mumbled, "Xing Xing," Xiang Yu’s brow furrowed.

Hearing the Xiang Yu of this world’s mother’s name slip from the imperial lord’s lips ignited a surge of unbridled anger within him. She was really nice to Xiang Yu. She was a mother he had dreamed of having in his world but this man forced her to her death. He could have experienced a mother’s love in this world but it was robbed from him.

His anger raged and clawed at his insides, threatening to consume him whole. He almost shouted, "Don’t call her name!" But before he could voice the words, the imperial lord’s hand shot out, grasping Xiang Yu’s wrist with surprising strength.

A tear formed at the corner of the imperial lord’s eye as he spoke, his voice tremulous and pained. "Xing Xing, I am so so sorry. I was wrong. I should have never left you alone."

Xiang Yu’s breath caught at the sight of the man reduced to this state. He felt a strong sense of disgust surge through him. He glanced at the hand holding his wrist, the very hand that had wielded power and inflicted suffering on his man. With a hard pull, he yanked his wrist away, shaking off the unwanted touch.

The disappointment that washed over the imperial lord’s face was unmistakable. The tormented man curled up into a ball, his breathing ragged, and soon he fell back into a troubled sleep, tears slipping silently down his face.

Xiang Yu stood there, caught between conflicting desires. The darkness still lurked inside him, urging him to finish what he had started. But he couldn’t kill him, at least not yet. He had to get Han Xin out first.

Xiang Yu left the man sleeping on the couch, the sight of the broken man still lingering in his mind. He moved silently through the dim corridors of the bed chambers, each step fueling the urgency that consumed him. "Hex," he whispered, his breath steadied with resolve, "where’s this secret elevator?"

Hex responded almost immediately, its voice spiralling into his mind. "It’s behind the panel in the imperial study."

He made his way to the study, its ornate doors looming in front of him. Standing by the wall, he placed a steady hand on the cool surface. "Can you bypass the security?" he asked, his voice barely a murmur.

"I can try," Hex replied, sliding into the virtual space of the security panel. Xiang Yu watched, his muscles tense as Hex navigated the codes like a fish in water. But soon, Hex’s voice rang with surprise. "It’s not connected to the mainframe. This has its own separate security!"

Xiang Yu frowned, frustration mixing with impatience. "What do we need?"

"It requires the imperial lord’s genetic code," Hex explained hesitantly, "but it can also accept a six-digit pin."

Xiang Yu tapped the wall, causing a floating panel to materialize before him. He felt the pulse of urgency in the air. "You only have one chance. Otherwise, it will lock," Hex cautioned.

A moment later, the door slid open, revealing an elevator that awaited him. As he stepped inside, Hex asked, "How did you know the password?"

Xiang Yu smirked slightly, bitterness coating his words. "He’s obsessed with my mother. He would put in a pin that reminds him of her."

"Oh, so it’s her birthday, then?" Hex guessed.

Xiang Yu shook his head as the doors slid closed. "No."

Hex’s curiosity was evident. "If not her birthday, then maybe an anniversary?"

"No," Xiang Yu replied, his tone thick with memories. "The day they met."

Xiang Yu remembered the countless times the original Xiang Yu’s mother had recounted their love story to her young son. The words had been imprinted in his mind, a fairytale he never wanted to hear.

His mother had been so enamoured with the tale of their meeting, repeating it in the hopes that her son might one day experience the same kind of love. But for that Xiang Yu, it was tainted. He despised love when he thought of the way his father had treated her. If confining her to the palace and ignoring her existence was love, then he wanted nothing of it.

The elevator dinged softly, the doors sliding open to reveal a dimly lit secret lab. The lights flickered on, illuminating a sterile large room that felt cold and lifeless. Xiang Yu instinctively drew his weapon as he stepped inside, alert and ready.

His gaze swept the lab and landed on a large cage in the centre, but it was empty. Xiang Yu’s jaw clenched, his rage surging as he connected the dots. He could only imagine that this was where his father had kept Han Xin, caging him like an animal.

"Hex, can you scan the lab?" he asked, his mind racing.

"No," Hex replied, disappointment lacing its tone. "It seems the signal is blocked in here."

Xiang Yu continued his search, moving deeper into the lab’s unsettling silence. Suddenly, something caught his eye. A lace curtain gently floated, stirred by a machine’s soft breeze. It seemed oddly out of place in the sterile environment. Curiosity drew him closer.

Pulling the curtain apart, he gasped, shock freezing him in place. Inside, he found something he hadn’t expected. This imperial lord was truly a beast. The sight before him revealed not only the depths of his father’s cruelty but also the twisted remnants of his desperation.
