Chapter 578: The unsung heroes
With only a small portion left behind, everything else was swiftly carried off to the palace and sent to the food storage before it could be loaded and taken away. Earlier in the day, the minister for agriculture and a few officials who worked in that department had been invited to give their opinions on the new improved seeds and also discuss which parts of the empire needed them more than others. Chi Lian had not been invited to this meeting as she did not seek recognition or a reward for the cultivation of the seeds.
The invited officials, together with other members of the royal family were the first to taste the corn which was boiled and roasted.
"It’s good, your majesty, and the size is standard." the minister commented. "If the quality for all the seeds can be similar to this then the corn can be grown for exportation."
The grand emperor shook his head, agreeing with the minister. "It’s a bit lacking in taste to what we usually eat though." he said.
"Is there another breed that is different from this?" the minister asked curiously.
"There is." the emperor confirmed, "But the yield is too small and further attempts to increase the yield result in rotting." He gave the answer Chi Lian had once given to him.
"That’s too bad." the minister sighed and he said, "There is no lack for wealthy people who would pay top coin for good quality ingredients. I thought we would have the opportunity to exploit that angle. But, your majesty, will we have the opportunity to meet the researchers behind the improved seed breed?"
Pretending to think about it for a seconds, the emperor shook his head and replied slowly, as if he was thinking about deeply, "This team wishes to remain anonymous and I will allow it to stay that way. Exposing them might attract the wrong the wrong kind of attention."
Brilliant scientists in varying nations were always being poached or killed off accidentally. Chi Lian was a valuable asset to their royal family, she had to be protected tightly. "Anyway, have you prepared a list of the regions which need these seeds more urgently than others? The North should come first, most of the central and south is thriving so they can wait."
The minister produced a list of towns that had been prepared and he read them off one by one as the emperor compared them to his own list.
"Your majesty," the minister said very slowly with hesitation in his voice after the final list was approved and stamped by the emperor. "The aristocratic families..." he left off. What he was hinting at was that usually, such seeds could be occasionally offered to these families as a gift by the emperor in the old days. The tradition had died out but the minister present was Ho Ying Qin, a descendant of an aristocratic family and it was inevitable that he personally have some greed toward the seeds. Whether it was for economic purposes or simply to eat, these families would want a small piece of the pie.
"I will take that into consideration however I will also urge you to keep this under wraps because their are those who would rather see the seeds burn than our empire flourish." Whilst keeping his new findings about the swaying loyalties of some aristocratic families in mind, the emperor replied vaguely. His answer was neither a yes, nor a no.
"As you say, your majesty." the minister cupped his hands and bowed, and he and the other officials left.
Outside the palace as the trucks were loaded, one of the palace guards sneakily took a picture and sent it to the crown princess.
T4 was alerted and he sent the face of the guard to Chi Lian. The entire place was covered with her cameras, nothing happened inside anywhere without being recorded.
When Chi Lian met with old tiger, spider and five others from her group inside her house in the basement, she added a new face to the board. Every piece of information she acquired was now being shared with Muyang’s team via a secure network online. When Muyang confirmed the information, it would be forwarded to the emperor’s loyal men who would start keeping an eye on said individual.
When the crown princess received the picture, she sent it to her uncle Yan Moon. He too, sent it to another individual and T4 traced the texts all the way to an individual named He Ching, an ordinary police officer in the capital. The text stopped there, moving no further as if she was the last stop.
"New face," Chi Lian announced and He Ching too joined the board which was growing lager daily. Her information was sent in by T4 and they browsed through it.
Squirrel tsked twice and looked at He Ching’s face with pity, "She is pretty, young and smart, who got her involved in this mess?"
"Probably a family member." old tiger answered.
’Treason dies not depend on beauty." Spider commented.
"But boss," old tiger looked at her and he asked, "We have not been let in on the major operation, aren’t we doing too much heavy lifting to be side lined?"
Spider crumpled a piece of paper and tossed it at old tiger before she could answer. "Not all heroes are acknowledged, haven’t you heard about unsung heroes? We are the unsung heroes of the empire."
She looked at spider and laughed silently because he was enjoying himself with all this undercover spying work. It was much more exciting than watching Mei-Mei all the time.
She looked at the time and stood up, putting down the pen in her hands. "I still have guests upstairs so you can keep on working. Call me if you need anything and do not send any piece of information out without running past me first."
Old tiger pulled swiped the large monitor and a bunch of new faces showed up on the large screen at the front. "In that case, what should we do about these ones?"
All the faces were of celebrities, actors, actresses and singers. Most of them belonged to dragon entertainment. "They are used by the green gang to smuggle drugs and other things especially now that the Yan family cannot bring them in using fish anymore. The problem is that we don’t know how many are involved or how deep the pit goes."
"Is this related to the Co-Co that was arrested at the airport?" she asked, completely unreadable as if she was not the one that shared the story.
"Mmm." old tiger nodded and said, "She had just made it on to our radar because she is a common face in Sinner. However, she has been arrested so it’s a given that she will be abandoned. The only way to save herself is to give up her suppliers or her buyers and we know she won’t do that. I thought we would be able to turn her but the damn nosy peep star interfered and that card is blown."
She rolled her eyes and scoffed, and said, "Aren’t you too hasty in blaming the peep star? Co-Co was arrested by the police, the peep star exposed something which was going to come out eventually. This card could not be used right from the start, it was a dead end."
’Ignore him boss, he just needs someone to blame because he had come up with an entire strategy around Co-Co. But, when we were looking into her, we found something weird. Monkey said that sinner is peddling a new kind of drug, one that makes people rapidly addicted and turns them into zombies that do anything you want. It’s not coming from overseas, I think it’s being manufactured in house. I am all for waiting and arresting everyone at once but this drug has killed six people so far. Should we still stay out of sinner even after all this?" Squirrel looked at her with curious eyes.
