Chapter 52: The hidden village
Chapter 52: The hidden village
As soon as the animals in the forest started chirping and roaring or making any other sound. Chi Lian arose and freshened herself. Thanks to the features of the camping equipment, she had access to hot water, and an invisibility cover which aided her in taking a full body shower in the woods.
She ate some roasted sweet potatoes and strawberry milk for breakfast. She swallowed an energy capsule just in case she run into any other dangerous predators on her way out of the woods and then made her way to the village.
Before entering it, she used her binoculars to study the environment and T4 scanned it for any possible dangerous weapons. Once he declared it safe, she carried her bag on her back and stumbled into the village like a lost hiker.
She grabbed the arm of the first individual she met and asked for help.
Most of the villagers were old, scrawny and dressed in old patched up clothes. They carried farming tools so she assumed this village relied on farming to get by.
The man whose arm she grabbed was carrying a sickle and a hoe. He was clearly on his way to his farm.
It was time to test her acting skills.
"Sir, I am lost can you please help me." She desperately pleaded while shedding tears.
"Oh, where did you come from?" the man looked behind her in curiosity. "Not many people can survive in the Muru forest, how did you get there in the first place?"
"I was hiking with my friends at the edge of the forest and I was separated from them. I walked all night and managed to stumble upon this place today." She wailed even louder and attracted the attention of more people.
"Please help me, I am tired, hungry and injured. Is there any way I can see a doctor?" she pleaded hopefully.
All they had to do was believe her sob story and take her to the benevolent doctor, mission accomplished.
"Someone should go and call the chief." The man whose arm she was holding suggested.
"I will go." A young boy of about seven or eight years took off running.
She was less interested in meeting the village chief and more in meeting the doctor. What was wrong with these people? She was claiming to be injured, limping and even bleeding because she applied fake blood to her leg but they were just standing around.
"Is there a doctor in your village?" she asked again.
"There is no doctor here; we are poor farmers who are living in an isolated village. Which doctor will come here?"
"So what do you do when someone is injured?" she asked.
She refused to believe them; T4 had clearly said the benevolent doctor was in this area.
"We chew some herbs; Wuxi’s grandmother is a traditional medicine herbalist, we go to her when one’s condition is dire."
"T4 are you sure the benevolent doctor is male?" she asked.
"Yes host, he is indeed male. This is a picture of him from a few years ago."
The picture on the screen showed a vibrant young man that was smiling and carrying a young girl with a deformed lip. According to the story below that picture, that girl was one of many patients that were going to receive free corrective surgery courtesy of the benevolent doctor Tang Siming.
That picture was the last time anyone saw the doctor again. He had gone missing and the police tried to find him but to no avail.
Six years went by and the case went from cold to frozen. Tang Siming was all but forgotten by the public. The only people who remembered him are those whose lives he saved and his widow and son.
"The chief is here." The young boy shouted as he run back.
An old man, with a long white beard and bent back slowly followed the energetic boy. He was being supported by a middle aged woman who appeared to be exhausted.
When he reached Chi Lian, he looked at her suspiciously. Nobody just stumbles out of Muru forest. It was full of dangerous animals, how had this young lady made it through with just a slight injury to her leg.
"How can we help you?" he asked softly.
Chi Lian repeated the same story that she had given the first man. A crowd of around fifty villagers was surrounding her and the children curiously run circles around her.
"We have no doctor in this village and the cell reception is poor. You can follow that foot path slowly and you will be back on the main road in three days."
The chief pointed to a path leading up into the mountain.
’How does he expect me to reach that place on an injured leg?’ she asked herself. Why was he eager to get her out of the village?
"But I am injured; I can’t walk for a long distance." She cried pitifully.
"Take her to see Wuxi’s grandmother for first aid and then she has to leave." The chief had made his final decision.
A few kind women stepped forward and assisted her all the way to an old bungalow as Wuxi led the way.
"Grandma, you have a patient." Wuxi shouted.
An old woman came out of the house and placed a stool at the front door.
"Place her here." She told the two women.
After they sat her down on the bench, she sent the two women away. Before they left, they informed her that the chief wanted the stranger gone by sun down.
As soon as they were out of ear shot, the old woman turned her attention to Chi Lian.
"I have dealt with enough blood in my life to know that you are not really injured. Why are you really here?" the old woman asked cautiously.
"I am looking for someone." Chi Lian showed her the photo of Tang Siming.
The old woman’s eyes widened and she looked around for intruders. "After all these years of waiting, someone has finally found us." The old woman cried silently. "Follow me." She entered the house quickly.
Chi Lian followed her inside and shut the door. Wuxi was left outside and told to yell if he saw any person. Not even a shadow was allowed to come close to the door.
"How did you know that he is here?"
"Let’s just say I have help from someone very powerful." Chi Lian said as she looked around the house. In this modern day, it amazed her that someone was living as if it was the 1950’s.
"Grandma, why do you live like this?" she asked.
"It’s because we have been forced to. The man in that picture is my son Tang Siming. My family and I are prisoners in this village. Six years ago, my son and his family came to this village with his colleague to treat a patient. What he didn’t know was that it was all a lie. His colleague Situ Bao wanted to steal his prescriptions and formulas so he prepared a prison in this abandoned place to hold my son. I didn’t know about it until that colleague showed up on my door step and claimed that Siming was injured so I should come and take care of him.
But it was all a ploy to give his colleague Situ Bao more leverage over Siming. Siming was forced to do medical experiments for Situ Bao ever since then. Siming threatened that he would kill himself if I wasn’t allowed to raise Wuxi so they gave him to me. We have been in this village since then.
All these people here are homeless so they were hired keep an eye on us in exchange for money. That’s why there are no young people here, only old men and women with no families left in the world. Please, you have to save my Siming, Ever since they were dragged to that mountain fortress, I haven’t seen him and my daughter-in-law in six years, I don’t even know if they are dead or alive."
"Village chief, are you here to see the patient?" Wuxi shouted very loudly as he had been instructed.
