Chapter 287: Tears and guilt
The emperor’s courts having a population almost equal to that of a small city had an internal hospital. It was a private hospital owned by the royal family and that hospital is where mama Chi was rushed for urgent medical attention.
Currently, Chi Lian was pacing back and forth in the waiting area because visitors were not allowed in the emergency room unless the doctors invited them in.
The Chi oldest Chi brothers were sitting anxiously in the chairs, folding their hands in a similar manner with their heads bowed, facing the ground while the youngest Chi Zimo was biting his nails while secretly wiping tears out of his eyes.
Papa Chi was just leaning against a wall, red eyes facing the door leading to the emergency room without blinking.
As they waited for a doctor to come and update on them on mama Chi’s situation, Chi Lian could not help feeling guilty in her heart. She kept wondering if she had caused her mother to have a heart attack by pushing and pushing.
"Host, it’s not your fault and your mother is not having a heart attack."
No matter what T4 said, she was inconsolable. If she had not brought up the topic, her mother would be fine. Chi Lian’s mind was spinning; it was going to dark places which were filled with shadows of her past life as a result of growing up an orphan.
"She is not going to die host." T4 assured her.
The door to the emergency room was opened and a nurse that came out approached Papa Chi first.
"Sir, are you the husband of the patient that was brought in after fainting?"
Papa Chi nodded and the children all came closer, including Chi Lian. Chi Zimo slipped his hand into hers and she squeezed it tight for strength and reassurance.
"How is our mother?" Chi Wei asked.
"The patient is fine; she probably collapsed due to excitement. She is already awake and there is no need for any further treatment for now. You can take her home now unless there is any hidden condition you think we should know about. "
The nurse looked at them, waiting for any answer.
"With me here, she is guaranteed to live a full healthy life." T4 answered the nurse who could not even hear him.
"Okay then, she is being released. If she collapses again please bring her back immediately." The nurse emphasized since no one was answering.
Papa Chi signed the paperwork and mama Chi was escorted out of the ER by a nurse. Papa Chi carefully took her arm, Chi Wei supported the other side and they went to the car and swiftly returned home immediately.
Nobody said a word in the car and when they entered the house, nobody was saying a word. They were all lost for words or too afraid to say what could be perceived as the wrong thing.
For a few seconds, they all stood still in the living room, mulling around like a couple of strangers in an awkward situation.
"I am going to take your mother to the bedroom." Papa Chi mumbled.
Mama Chi was pale, and her eyes were red. Her eyes were devoid of joy, and she was just looking around with this blank look in her eyes.
Papa Chi took her to their bedroom, leaving Chi Lian and her brothers to fill the weird silence with whatever thoughts and opinions they had about the situation.
"It’s not your fault." Was the first thing that Chi Wei said as he looked at his baby sister who was wearing a guilty look on her face.
Chi Lian did not just look guilty; she appeared to be scared as well. The older brother knew what every look on his sister’s face usually meant. To others she may be unreadable but to him, she was the same brave but cowardly little sister that would hide under his bed with a plastic toy gun on rainy days because she was scared of the thunder.
She may be older now but she had that similar scared look on her face right now and it was his duty to reassure her.
"I mean it Chi-Chi," Chi Wei approached her and grabbed both of her arms tightly. "Look at me sis."
Big fat tears came rolling down Chi Lian’s cheek involuntarily.
"Stop it." Chi Wei said sternly. He was hoping that tough love would keep her from falling apart but it did not work.
Rather than hold the tears back, Chi Lian’s tears came running down her cheeks faster and faster. Slowly but steadily, her snivels became louder until it turned into an outburst.
Chi Wei gathered her into his arms; Chi Rui and Chi Zimo encircled her from different sides. They wrapped her in amongst their arms like a rolled egg.
"I shouldn’t have said anything." She said in between sobs.
"You did the right thing sis, mother may be sad right now but the truth is better than a lie. Now she understands why grandmother never loved or cared about her." Chi Wei explained.
"Yes sister, if I knew about it first I would have told her too. That wicked old woman will take everything from us if she gets a chance to." Chi Zimo said while puffing his cheeks up like a stuffed squirrel.
"What we have to do now is find out who mother’s real parents are." Chi Wei said. "Those people will not give the information out for free but we will use all means possible to pull it out of their mouths."
Given the way their aunt treated their mum right from childhood, it was not impossible to leap to the assumption that she too knew something about their mother not being her sister.
"I suggest we get some pay back for all the things grandmother did it us over the years." Chi Zimo said unhappily.
"Why are we still referring to her as grandmother?" Chi Rui asked.
Since she was horrible to them, never loved them and was not biologically related to them, she was basically a stranger.
"She is to be called’ the wicked witch of the city’ from now on." Chi Zimo giggled at his own words.
Chi Lian was slowly calming down, she even giggled a little bit.
Feeling encouraged, her brothers came up with more and more ridiculous names for their wicked grandmother. With each name, Chi Lian laughed a little louder.
However, there was still one nagging question in the back of her mind. The one that refused to go away no matter how much she ignored it, it was the result of her being the architect that designed the current events in their house.
"Do you think mother is mad at me?" she asked in a small voice.
