Chapter 222: The bossy big chef
"Me...What did I do?" Chi Rui asked her with hopeless exasperation in his voice. "I am not the one who just tried to bring the walls down with her voice. You know little sis, for someone who calls herself a lady, you are not very ladylike sometimes. Ladies do not shout like that."
"Just move brother, before I kick you just as I used to do when we were children." She threatened.
She walked ahead and they found themselves in the newly furnished cafeteria. It was all painted white, with tables and chairs properly organized. At every table were two small toddler sized chairs which surprised her. Did someone prepare them for her children?
"Older brother had the toddler sized chairs added two days ago. They are screwed into the floor to make sure that the child doesn’t fall out." Chi Rui informed her when he saw looking at them puzzlingly.
She smiled appreciatively and said, "As always, older brother dotes on me the most."
"I chose the bright colors you know." Chi Rui grumbled with a complaint, "I even chose the style of the chairs, Chi Wei has no taste." He said sullenly.
Chi Lian smiled brightly and said, "I was wrong, second brother you dote on me the most." She changed her words pretty quickly.
"Make sure you repeat that in front of him next time. In fact repeat it again so that I record it as evidence in the future."
He took his phone out of his pocket and pressed record. "Say it." He said. Suddenly her mouth was shut as if it had been with glue.
"Chi-Chi, have you lost your voice all of a sudden?" he frowned at her with a little glint in his eyes. He knew all too well that she would not say it.
His little sister had been avoiding that question for as long as he could remember. The three brothers loved playing the ’who is your favorite brother?’ game with her. Their wise ass of a sister of course outsmarted them by saying their father was her favorite male in the house.
"Oh look, I see the big chef, we should go and say hi." Chi Lian swiftly took off running with a baby in her arms. One would think the baby weighed as much as a small tennis ball with the speedy way she was moving.
"Hehehee." Chi Rui laughed and followed her anyway.
"Hey big chef," Chi Lian loudly announced her presence in the very large professional kitchen. It was designed even better than she thought. It was spacious, with marble counters which were sparkling clean despite the fact there was a lot of cooking going on.
In the corner was a medium sized freezer, next to it a fridge and then some open cabinets were spices and the like were kept.
The kitchen was divided into two sections, one for pastries and one for food. All the workers in the kitchen were dressed professionally in black and white chef outfits, masks and hair nets.
The big chef was yelling loudly at someone when they came in which is why Chi Lian had to shout to make her presence known.
Mei-Mei, on seeing food and snacks wiggled in Chi Lian’s hands, saying, "Mummy down, down." Her big clear beautiful eyes were glued specifically onto the freshly baked chocolate cake which was being sliced into pieces to be put on display in a glass cabin.
"No, no, no..." Chi Lian suddenly heard the big chef saying while eyeing them. "Absolutely no children in my kitchen." She said sternly to Chi Lian.
"But this is my kitchen." Chi Lian retorted.
The big chef crossed her arms over her chest and glared at Chi Lian seriously. "Are you a chef?"
"No." Chi Lian found herself answering. She was in fact quite a terrible cook; she was hoping to take lessons from a professional chef or her mother.
"Is your office in here?" the big chef asked, still giving Chi Lian the same look.
"No." she answered once more.
"Do I come to your office and touch all your paperwork or anchor the news for your journalists?" the big chef glared at her intensely.
Chi Lian knew the routine by heart now. She would say no and the big chef would look at her smugly and say something else to emphasize the fact that the kitchen was not her territory.
"I just came by to see how things are going. For all I know, you could be in need of some more funding." She lied.
The big chef smiled like a con man. "Oh, why didn’t you lead with that? I can even allow your children to take a slice of cake since you are here to offer me money." She personally dismissed the person who was adding frosting onto the cake and sliced a piece for Mei-Mei and little monk.
"Follow me." She led the way pout of the kitchen into the bakery from where random people could walk in and buy some pastries.
Chi Lian ignored Mei-Mei’s protests at being forcefully picked up again just as she had gained her freedom and before she could get something to eat.
"Mei-Mei my sweet baby why can’t you be as calm as your older brother?" she asked her daughter who was looking at her aggrievedly.
Little Monk was calmly looking around in Chi Rui’s hands, not making any sound or fuss.
"Girls are fussier than boys. Your son behaves like an old man sis, just look at the way he is dressed. I hear he refuses to wear clothes with cartoons." Chi Rui commented.
Little monk was dressed in a small baby suit, in shorts with suspenders, a short sleeved shirt and a bow tie. He really looked like a little CEO. Only Chi Lian who knew about her son’s mental strength understood his choice in clothing. Little monk did not like childish things at all.
Still, she got him to accept pajamas with cartoon images. Slowly by slowly, she would make him accept all those cute childishly designed clothes. Her baby was only two; he could not go around looking thirty.
But then again, he did look good in his little suit outfits. Like a tiny gentleman.
The front end of the bakery the big chef led them into was beautifully decorated; there were no more than ten tables in the room. It was just as spacious as the kitchen and the smells in there were tantalizing.
There were some freshly baked pastries in the glass display cabinets and people were already lining up at the counter to buy whatever had caught their eyes. They had not even advertised the bakery but customers were already being lured in by the amazing smells.
Indeed, raw materials from the farm were amazing. All the flour, wheat, milk and eggs used in the kitchen came from the farm. Products made from good ingredients and a talented chef did not need advertising, they advertised themselves.
The big chef placed the cakes on the table and everyone sat around it. Chi Lian and Chi Rui picked up plastic forks and started feeding the children.
Mei-Mei ate the cake with her eyes closed just as Chi Lian always did when she was enjoying what she was eating.
"So, what do you lack?" she asked the big chef.
