Chapter 191: Theories on the murders.
Chi Lian and Piggy left the restaurant slowly, following Squirrel who had designated himself the driver for the day.
"Drive the boss carefully." Piggy emphasized.
"Yes." Squirrel humbly responded.
Chi Lian smiled slightly and shook her head. According their files which old tiger compiled for her, Squirrel had a penchant for speed. Occasionally he participated in Illegal Street racing for fun. If he was behind the wheel of any car, it was safe to assume that at one point he would run a red light. He could not resist the temptation.
"I mean it Squirrel; if you go over sixty I will kick your ass." Piggy warned him once more.
"Sheesh, I heard you already. I would not risk the boss’s life carelessly."
True to his word, Squirrel maintained the legal driving speed until they got to the detectives apartment. He lived in a gated community so they had to identify themselves for security to let them inside only after the detective agreed to meet with them.
When they met him, Chi Lian was surprised by how calm he was. She thought he would be excited to talk to journalists about the case after all these years but he seemed to be uninterested in them. She used the few seconds to observe his house. It was filled with happy pictures, the evidence of a life well lived.
Some pictures showed him hiking with his wife or on trips in different cities in the empire. Retirement was probably good for his marriage.
His wife brought them some tea and excused herself.
"What brings you to my home miss Chi?" he asked boisterously?
She smiled and answered, "The sleeping killer. I know you were one of the detectives on the very first case. Our television is doing a special program on the case and I would like to hear your opinion. Don’t worry, I will not show your face or say who you are during the airing. In fact, I won’t even cite you as my source."
She needed to make these assurances in case he was as frightened to talk about it as the others.
"Thank you for your assurances Miss Chi but I do not fear the killer. I am more disappointed in the fact that after all these years we are yet to find that monster. It’s the one case that has always haunted me you now. I had to retire because I could not look any more families in the face and promise them that we would bring the killer to justice knowing fully well that I was lying." He said with disappointment and self-blame in his voice.
"I understand." She said softly. "The guilt you are carrying must be heavy."
"You have no idea." He said with a heavy smile. "Anyway, why are you covering the story in a special program? Most news networks lost interest in it after a few years had gone by with no results. Now they just show up when the police finds a new corpse. They take pictures, sensationalize the story, multiply the fear of the citizens and then they are gone, until the next body drops anyway."
"We are not like the others, you can trust us." Piggy chimed in with an assuring smile.
"Hmm." The retired detective Li Tao responded.
"I am interested in two things mostly, the first victim and your opinions. I have done a lot of research on this case and in my point of view; the first murder was the most important. It seemed to be unplanned and abrupt. Perhaps even the use of the injection was an afterthought, a weapon of convenience so to say.
And then there is the element of the water. The first victim was dumped in his swimming pool, at home. The rest were moved to the lake after being killed and dumped. In my opinion, we need to understand the first murder to understand the motive behind the killings."
"Ha!" Li Tao slapped his thigh excitedly, "Finally, there is someone who thinks the same thing I thought back then. It was my opinion too, I tried to tell my captain that the first murder was the most important but after the third one happened, my theory fell to bits. Suddenly we were scrambling to arrest anyone basing off of the assumptions of a criminal profiler who deemed the murders as senseless killings done by a sadist for pleasure."
"So tell me what you thought, anything you can think of." She encouraged him.
The detective looked around as if he was going to tell them a secret or spread some Salacious rumor. He came close to Chi Lian and said, "I think Xie Gunzhing was killed for revenge."
"What? No way" Piggy shouted his disagreement in disbelief.
Li Tao looked at him as if he was an idot. "I am telling you, he was killed for revenge. That family has a dark history. You don’t cheat and kill people to steal their wealth without expecting consequences. I am sure Xie Gunzhing paid for the sins of his father."
Chi Lian seemed to be receptive of the idea but then she asked the obvious question. "If he was killed for revenge, what about the rest of the victims? Unless they are somehow connected to the Xie family then their deaths were either a means to confuse the investigation or the killer’s desire to murder grew after the first killing leading to the serial killings that followed."
Li Tao shook his head, "The victims were not connected to Xie Gunzhing in any way. We checked and rechecked to make sure we did not miss anything."
"Did you check to see if they were connected to Xie Gunzhing’s father or grandfather?" Chi Lian asked him. After all, it was his theory that Xie Gunzhing paid for the crimes of his family. In that case, one had to look into the victim’s parents and grandparents as well to see if they were related to Xie Gunzhing’s parents or grandparents.
"My God!" Li Tao stood up.
