Chapter 192: Clever Chi Lian
Chapter 192: Clever Chi Lian
Chi Lian was very confused to see the retired detective jump up so excitedly. Did the police really not look into it? Investigations usually covered large grounds; it was only natural to assume that the police looked into that theory.
"I am bringing my files." Li Tao rushed into a room and returned just as quickly as he left. He returned with a box full of paperwork and he placed it on the floor. One by one he removed the documents and placed them on the table between them. "These are my old files on the case. I photocopied the original documents of the investigation so that I could work the case on my own after retirement. I have friends on the force who keep me upraised on anything new. If what you assume is true, then we should find the people who had grudges against Xie Gunzhing’s father."
"And his grandfather." Piggy reminded him.
"Well, all of it." Li Tao shook his hands in a hurry and check manner.
The group of four started categorizing the documents into suspects who came from families that had any problem with the Xie family.
After two hours of combing through the documents, they had well over twenty suspects, including those who were not in Chi Lian’s file which T4 got by hacking into the police computers.
"This list is too long; we need to find a way to cut it down." Chi Lian said in a frustrated voice. After giving herself two days to finish this mission, she was left with only one day. They needed to move faster.
"Boss, he compensated the families of those people his father wronged. Will it be helpful if we get our hands on that list?" Squirrel asked thoughtfully.
Her head snapped up immediately, "Yes." She responded, "If we can get our hands on that list, then we will be able to remove everyone that was compensated. We need to find someone who wanted more compensation or someone who refused the compensation, and those who were not compensated at all even though they deserved compensation."
"But how do we get our hands on that list?" Piggy asked.
"Easy," Li Tao said, "I can call Xie Gunzhing’s lawyer and request for it. I met the Xie family when I was investigating the case. Over the years, I have kept in touch with his wife, she calls me for updates every year on his death anniversary. Their lawyer was instructed to help me with anything I need because I was the only detective interested in the family finances and history as a motive." He explained. Then he made a phone call and two minutes later, a list was forwarded to him.
"Got it." He waved his phone in front of their faces. "What should we do with it?" he asked Chi Lian. While he had experience amounting to years, Chi Lian’s research and theories had renewed his hope. He was confident that with her help, they would identify the killer or the most likely suspect at least.
"Read a name and we cross it off or note it down. I have a friend that can run background checks in a few minutes. If there is anyone whose information is not on the list, my friend will provide it." She answered confidently.
Everyone grabbed a list or a file, whatever they could eliminate from the pile was to be abandoned. They would follow Occam’s razor theory, after eliminating the possible, whatever was left, however improbable was the right answer.
Li Tao started reading names, "Jang Suyan, Chi Guang, Li....."
As he read, names were crossed off and others were added. Eventually, they were left with three names.
"Thank God." Chi Lian said in relief, "Now we are getting somewhere."
Detective Li Tao was smiling like a brand new man, his previously hunched shoulders seemed to be a little straighter. "If the others had believed me, we could have compiled this list years ago. So many lives would have been saved." He said.
Chi Lian nodded and replied, "It’s not too late to stop the killer and other lives will be saved by catching him now. And speaking of him, I think we should also eliminate the assumption that the killer is male. Three of the victims were very big men, one was a martial artist. Hasn’t anybody ever questioned why these people were overpowered so easily without fighting back? Just look at their bodies, there are no signs of a struggle, none of them fought back. So unless they were drugged, we can also assume that the killer could be female. Think about it, a beautiful or weak woman approaches you asking for your help or a date and catches you off-guard. Evidence like footprints can be faked; we have all seen such scenarios in movies."
"Wow, boss you are so smart." Squirrel looked at her with awe in his eyes.
"I know," she replied cockily, "Eat your vegetables and you will be as smart as me in the future." She joked and laughed a little.
The retired detective Li Tao shook his head with disappointment all over his face. "We really missed so much during the heat of excitement. We should have questioned everything. Instead, we were so busy patting ourselves on the shoulders for finally having a clue. Dear God! Just imagine the humiliation the police is going to face if the killer turns out to be female? Someone will have to shoulder the blame for that mistake and be fired.’ He sighed and shook his head once more.
"Let’s first find the actual killer before making assumptions." She told him. "I could also be wrong, I am not a detective after all." She reminded him.
"Boss, "Piggy called, "There is a new name on the list, you should call your friend and have them look into it."
The name was Hu Dieshang. She dialed her extra phone which was in her storage. She had to make everything look genuine.
"Hello, T4 detective agency at your service." Her system replied playfully.
"Hmm, my dear friend, I have sent you a name. Please check this person and send me detailed background information."
"I have already the name, I run each name as the detective read them off the list. You will be shocked to learn about Hu Dieshang’s background. I was not expecting it all."
